Jon Old and crabby. If I am not on a street corner yelling at clouds, I am at work or hiding in my workshop.

So they didn't realise Mr Zhu was Asian until now? This is some real Scooby-Doo shit.
sunsipples··on Please fix the AWS free tier before somebody gets hurt
At one point I tried using AWS trial for an app, didn't work out, cancelled the account (or so I thought) only to find 2 years later some charges to my bank of $2k and when I spoke to AWS support, there was another $4k accruing for this billing period. Took ages to sort out, while they eventually did refund the amount, I was still out of pocket exchange fees (X2) the exchange rate also meant I was out more money. In total I think having a compromised yet closed AWS free trial cost me $350 over a 6week period some 2 years after closing it.
sunsipples··on Will Linux phones stay around this time?
now i just need to live in EU and I'm set
sunsipples··on Will Linux phones stay around this time?
All I want is a proper modular phone that can run linux. I dont need camera, happy with a fat phone for battery space, etc. please let it happen one day.
sunsipples··on Mall department stores were struggling; the pandemic has pushed them to the edge
In my hometown in Australia, there was a shopping area (small chain grocery store) and a newsagent. Across the road was a foodhall, real estate agent and adult book store. Once the book shop went, the area struggled to keep customers and it became fast food and people travel to the next suburb for groceries. Maybe all shopping centres really need is access to porn?
sunsipples··on Bitcoin mining hash rate drops as blackouts instituted in China
frustrating that the ongoing use of bitcoin is never going to require less power. transactions take ages because of how much work is required to update the chain.

when the imaginary currency goes away, maybe we can move onto something more efficient like giant rocks with holes drilled in them?

sell it as an nft.

nft is 2020/21's monorail.

sunsipples··on Zorin OS 16
It doesn't answer any real questions but for someone new coming to linux who has read zorin is a good starter for windows users... front page has a large blue download zorin os button it. click it, default to ultimate version and a blue download/buy zorin ultimate.

feels like the website was created by marketing department or a used car salesman.

sunsipples··on Google misled consumers about the collection and use of location data
"The ACCC is seeking declarations, pecuniary penalties, publications orders, and compliance orders. This will be determined at a later date."

pecuniary penalties differ from fines and depending on where they are taxable could be a deduction :/

sunsipples··on Bitcoin miners are buying power plants
I enjoy the "bitcoin is a fuck you to the rich" but mining/management/use of bitcoin/crypto are not for poor people or even poor countries, they use both as a resource and as a get rich quick scheme, deliver a lot interest but have no actual value beyond a half billion dollar pizza.
sunsipples··on Google will be “modernizing” FeedBurner
wouldn't this make it one of google's longer running acquisitions that wasn't shuttered/amalgamated? youtube, android and... feedburner would be three of the older ones? not a tech item as such, but a whole tech business/brand?
sunsipples··on DevSkiller IT skills report 2021: Demand and hiring trends
I have been offered increase in pay to work in LA/SanFran/NY/UK/SouthAmerica/UAE and each time I knock it back because each time I have visited those places I could not wait to leave them. UAE was twice the money. The cost and conditions of life in Au are so much better.
sunsipples··on Don’t wait for billionaires to sell their stock. Tax their riches now
Australia uses GST (essentially same as VAT) but everything that is deemed essential/basic is GST free. It's a standard 10% of course other items incur additional taxes/fees/rates ("luxury cars" also have a 33% tax on top of GST)

sunsipples··on Twitch will ban users for 'severe misconduct' that occurs away from its site
tough times for those who like political discourse and cat boys.

twitch is a cesspit, with money. all of the streamers will just keep up with boobystreaming and accidental nudes and avoid anything too tawdry offline. got to keep the tens of dollars coming in.

sunsipples··on WebOS OSE 2.10
can I ask what put you off it? I mainly go with android for the apps and sideloading I can't sideload on the LG webos tv I have but can on all three android tvs. media streaming apps on LG webos feel very poorly optimised with the amount of "restarting to recover memory" I get watching youtube/amazon/netflix/stan/etc. even after cleaning cache/reinstalling/resetting/factory resetting the device it happens within 48 hours. most of the useful apps i have on the android tvs are not ported and if they are considering it they seem to be so far down the list of priorities for the devs, they may as well say no. PS, i don't have any love for android and if i am using webos wrong or missing something obvious i would love to know
sunsipples··on Clubhouse Payments
so far clubhouse has been great for weeding out contacts who use clubhouse.
sunsipples··on WebOS OSE 2.10
lg web os is a nightmare, i wish i had read up on it before i bought the last lg tv. laggy and missing so many apps. ended up buying a cheap android streaming box as the webos is cluttered with so much crap I won't use but missing things I use on other tvs
sunsipples··on Tesla owners asking what happens if 'full self driving' isn't real
I have a 2020 Hyundai, top spec but still just a Hyundai. It has great lane departure warning and it's very accurate. It picks up the difference between solid/double/broken white lines and lane changing/merging/splitting. We took it around a local race track and it followed the track markings on everything but a hairpin which it applies brakes and took us to a complete stop. If it wasn't for the driver attention settings (no steering wheel feedback from driver, the car will also stop) it could have almost been an unassisted drive.

Still won't trust it though

sunsipples··on Would you prefer working from home after the pandemic?
i live in a country where suburbia has pretty average internet (compared to work) and uploading technical shit takes me significantly longer. I can work from home but a change in scenery for me is needed every so often and working from home messes with my being at home time, it feels like living and working in the same place (duh) which I can't do constantly. during the lock down I worked from home for the most part but each week would work from our holiday house, just because it's different.
sunsipples··on Would you prefer working from home after the pandemic?
our office has meals area and a separate rec room with table tennis, pool table and an outdoor basketball half court. who on earth would have a table tennis table set up in an office or within earshot of where the work gets done?
sunsipples··on Would you prefer working from home after the pandemic?
it wouldn't be coworkers in a perfect world.

employer rents a desk/office in a larger facility (or multiple) and allows office working staff to travel less.

like a gym membership. sign up to one, use any of the same companies gyms. but with a desk or office, you can book ahead.

no central office with people commuting 40+ mins each way, less need for public transport, could also lower cost of renting an entire building/parking/insurance etc

I can work from home for the most part but would be nice to be able to take 10-15 minutes to walk or ride to an office and use the resources of an office. and play table tennis
