suneilp··on Parkinson's patients 'walk and talk again' after receiving cancer drug in trial
Developing new drugs is so damn expensive now. The trials and dealing with the FDA. Not many investors want to get involved in developing new drugs so now they turn to repurposing drugs.

I have a friend who is a CSO of a startup trying to get a weightloss drug passed. The stories I hear. Definitely not fun dealing with the FDA and securing more funding.

suneilp··on MariaDB 10.1 can do 1M queries per second
Thanks for the article. That was pretty interesting. Besides impressive performance, I like their support for JSON.
suneilp··on The UK is replacing roundabouts with traffic lights; US is doing the opposite
Traffic lights with magnetic sensors to detect cars and amount of cars waiting work pretty well here in California. Unless you're riding a motorcycle...
suneilp··on MariaDB 10.1 can do 1M queries per second
Yeah, I want to drool but utilizing that many threads in "practical" scenarios seems difficult. It would probably be great for messaging systems though!
suneilp··on MariaDB 10.1 can do 1M queries per second
This is sorta misleading. A quote from the article, "The changes in the MariaDB source code leading to those impressive performance improvements are part of porting MariaDB to Power8."

Pretty frustrating. I was pretty excited since MariaDB is a drop in replacement for MySQL (more or less). But you have to use it on a totally different architecture which can't be justified without a lot of deliberation.

suneilp··on What The New York Times Didn’t Say About Amazon
How about some proof that Olson committed fraud. With everything I've been hearing about Amazon, I have to wonder if Olson was innocent or scapegoated by a group of people involved in the fraud.

suneilp··on Estonia's E-Residency Program Is Growing Faster Than Predicted
Can anyone provide any insight on why E-Residency would be good for businesses? How about startups in particular?
suneilp··on OS X El Capitan License: in Plain English
X Windows has traumatized me in the past.
suneilp··on OS X El Capitan License: in Plain English
If I'm just 'borrowing' El Capitan, then that means the copy I'm running belongs to them. Therefore, any intellectual property I develop using my copy could technically belong to them?
suneilp··on Show HN: CloudScrape – Cloud-based web scraping platform
Saying 50 concurrent agents is no big deal for most websites is kinda flippant. It all adds up and not every popular website can handle loads of traffic. By using a headless browser to gain a proper version of a webpage, you also strain a webserver with serving static files costing them bandwidth as well.
suneilp··on Show HN: A Platform For Self-Experimentation
In the first link, all of those stores are places I'd never buy supplements from. Many stores sell supplements from brands I never see when I research what to take to fix some problem.

When I realized that, that was the end of ever considering buying supplements from almost all stores.

Whole Foods and similar types of stores are reliable. However, I still prefer researching and buying online. Analyzing comments, both good and bad, are very revealing and can sometimes give you an idea if it will work for you.

But now I just try to eat my veggies and so on. Diversification of food choices gives you a more solid spectrum of nutrients and some foods/nutrients amplify the effects of other nutrients.

Small typo in the url for Quantified Mind, it's quantified-mind.com
suneilp··on Default Alive or Default Dead?
They also didn't have much in the way of worthy competition. That really helped them out a lot. It's different now. So much saturation in many areas things have moved from the era of bold ideas to the era of carving out niches.
suneilp··on Deprecating our AJAX crawling scheme
PhantomJS allows you to render a page and fully manipulate or search it. It's a headless WebKit browser you can use from the command line and it works pretty well. Google is obviously doing the same thing. They even used to show images of what a url looks like in the search results. They stopped doing that as I suspect it uses up a lot of resources of many sites.
suneilp··on Uber Is Taking Millions of Manhattan Rides Away from Taxis
Pretty much the same I hear, but one other thing they seem to prefer is longer rides than short ones.

About the benefits, most of them do Uber as a side gig so they often get benefits from their main job or Uber is a temporary thing.

suneilp··on Uber Is Taking Millions of Manhattan Rides Away from Taxis
I have to agree. I love the fact that it's easier to rate drivers and I'm always judicious in rating drivers. I always give drivers 5 ratings if they don't have issues.

There are complainers out there but from feedback I've gotten after commenting on a driver once I suspect Ube at least attempts to handle those kinds of situations.

suneilp··on Uber Is Taking Millions of Manhattan Rides Away from Taxis
I can't say I'm sorry to hear taxis lose business. Uber is being innovative and I like it. Taxi drivers, from what I understand, have been getting shafted for a long time by a corrupt system.

Uber drivers might not be making bank, but from what I can tell they are doing better. If I'm wrong about please correct me, I'd love to hear some feedback on that.

I often ask Uber drivers if the pay is worthwhile since I don't want to be supporting something that is screwing people over. So far it all seems positive for the most part.

suneilp··on Chromoscope: The milky way at different wavelengths
Far-infrared and microwave look cool. Some keyboard controls for panning would be nice.
suneilp··on Negative effects of driving and living near traffic
Pretty much everything described in this article applies to other activities or lack thereof. We sitting in front of our computers too long or wearing out the couch too much eating potato chips.

Exercise, or just a simple walk, is critical for our lives. It affects our outlook on life. We don't lack the ability to handle the busyness of modern life.

We lack the priority of taking care of ourselves.

suneilp··on Forcing suspects to reveal phone passwords is unconstitutional, court says
If backdoors legislation is passed, would there be any economic effect? Personally, I wouldn't be interested in doing anything more than "basic" stuff with my phone and would not feel compelled to upgrade phones so soon.

As for computing devices, aside from proprietary systems like Windows and Macs, do we not have reliable options that allow us to use uncompromised encryption?

Whats to stop app developers for embedding encryption packages or would they be forced to use compromised solutions?

Can you stop a person from building a secure line over a compromised medium, if that is even doable?

suneilp··on USS Robin – A Victorious U.S. Carrier That Didn’t Exist
That carrier doesn't look like British carriers. I always thought they had a curved launch ramp while USS carriers have always been a flat deck.
suneilp··on Muscle dysmorphia: One in 10 men in gyms believed to have 'bigorexia'
Great, another anxiety disorder being labeled with a sensationalist name.

It's amazing that some think this might be genetics or chemical imbalances. It's not. I'm not an expert or accredited something or other so what do I know.

It's just another example of double standards and unreasonable expectations being forced on people.

suneilp··on The yogic claim of voluntary control over the heart beat (1973)
They ruled out disconnecting the EKG. I'm still dubious about surviving without water.
suneilp··on Insufficient Sleep Is a Public Health Epidemic
Ok, from someone who has had sleep apnea for 5 years.

Screw steps 5-7.

Get your prescription and go to cpap.com (or another place) and buy an Auto CPAP (APAP) using your prescription. Use cpaptalk.com to get more answers and help with picking out a machine and other stuff.

Then you can "calibrate" it yourself. APAPs let you specify a range of pressures. Use the pressure you should have been told from the sleep study to pick a range around that pressure and just use that for a week. Look at the information yourself which any good machine lets you do so on your own.

The machine will show you how much time was spent at various pressure levels so if its hanging low or high in the range adjust the range to fit that value in the middle.

Rinse and repeat, its easy if a bit time consuming. Just don't look at the data after 1 night and make decisions.

And Auto CPAPs are generally FAR better than regular CPAPs. You can try to get one covered by insurance but that depends on the equipment providers and insurance company.

suneilp··on Megaupload Trial May Never Happen, Judge Says
Wouldn't that count as destruction of evidence? Even being the 'authorities', surely that would count as a strike against them.

suneilp··on How To Choose Your Co-Founder
This was a great article considering the issues I've been having with my fellow co-founders.

It's become clear I'm not respected, and get that 'just a developer' treatment. Perhaps thats my fault for not being more outspoken and critical of others. Either way, if there isn't mutual respect and trust, it ain't worth it. Its going to make you miserable.

Another point is that the CEO can't bring down the pressure on the slackers. The slackers can't directly admit to being slackers. And the CEO is taking 51% and not in favor of investors (wants to self-fund).

This has been a nightmare. Hopefully not having assigned my software over will protect me.

I've learned the hard way the consequences of jumping in bed with co-founders without making sure that there is alignment on many of the points in the article.
