sunderw··on Apple countersues Epic, seeks punitive damages
I think you gave very good examples. For me, Ticketmaster and scientific journals abuse their position and there should be laws to prevent that.
sunderw··on Apple countersues Epic, seeks punitive damages
There aren't a lot of alternatives in the smartphone space. If you don't like Android, you're stuck with Apple. Now if both are abusing their power, using your reasoning, you're supposed to say and do nothing ?
sunderw··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
It's very interesting because in the examples you described (music and programming at least), I sometimes feel limited by the tools I know.

I studied music theory for about 5 years more than 10 years ago and remember some of it. I like to compose music and sometimes like you said I'm really losing a lot of time/energy because I don't master the basics. Yet some other times, I don't even think about music theory and let my inspiration go - and it's often better quality.

I find this effect to be true in programming as well. I find myself restricted by the frameworks I know and sometimes my mind can't think outside of it.

sunderw··on Ask HN: How to succeed without working full time
By using success, I meant that I would like to be given more responsibilities, work on projects with bigger impact, to be more included in decisions. It usally comes with being promoted and having experience : things I find way more difficult while working part-time.

And by using average, I meant the fact of stagnating and not learning, etc...

I think I should not have used both of those terms. I does not really reflect what I mean (and I might sound full of myself).

sunderw··on Gitlab: don't discuss politics at work
Nobody here noticed the difference between "refusing to serve a customer" and "not wanting to to business with other unethical businesses". Gitlab could definitely chose with which other business they associate, and that would not mean allowing to target minorities. But every customer-facing business should not be allowed to refuse their service to anyone, because you're right, it would very easily lead to cases like the one you're describing.
sunderw··on TurboTax’s 20-Year Fight to Stop Americans from Filing Taxes for Free
It used to be that way in France until last year. The income taxes are now substracted directly on your paycheck. I personnaly prefer having a small amout taken each month than an enormous sum as a one-time payment.
sunderw··on Is this Paypal experience customary?
Your explanation seems very likely.

My supermarket has different websites (for their card or online shopping), and one has a X-characters limit while the other does not. It has been a BIG hassle to get rid of all the problems I had (and still occassionnaly have some trouble).

So while having a password character limit makes customers angry, it is better than breaking everything.

sunderw··on Russian FOSS activist arrested in Russia for his Tor exit-node
> because the majority of users are troublemakers

This statement is actually wrong. The majority of users are probably normal people. The majority of the traffic coming from exit nodes, though, may come from scripts/bots ; but that is a really small percentage of users.
