summertime42··on Ask HN: Having trouble getting senior applicants, wondering what to do about it
As an option - everyone has stated the easy problems of no salary listed and the take-home assessment - if you KNOW your salary is low, offer 4-day workweeks instead. I mean x4 7-8 hours, not 10-hour days. It might help hook some traffic.

You also might have to open up the doors to 1099/C2C consultants, as well. Or talk to a staffing company and borrow some resources to get stuff done in the meantime.

A good pipeline can hire a candidate in 3-4 hours. You have to run a technical interview, but I personally prefer verbal over paired-programming. I will refuse to do take-homes at this point and refer to my active github.

summertime42··on Ask HN: How do you know when you are burning out?
On changing jobs - Depends. If work isn't getting better *today*: ie, if they refuse to fire that toxic asshole, if they refuse to change that insane deadline -> if you have six months of savings, take a sabbatical for at least 3 of them. You are done starting now. No job is worth your mental health. You put in your two weeks starting now.

Make sure your next gig is calm @ 40 hours weeks. Do that for a year. Godspeed. Burnout sucks.

summertime42··on Ask HN: Advice for a Generalist Going Solo?
Specialize to catch the attention of HR/Recruiters/VPs; you are right, no one wants a generalist.

However, I find once I get in and do my specialty, I'll then generalize and flex as the project needs me. I am paid to be nice and make problems go away, above all.

summertime42··on Ask HN: Are companies preparing to end Remote?
This this this. I've been at plenty of gigs where everyone is all around the world. It's too late to go back, and good riddance! :D

=============================================================

Howdy, I'm Summer! I've been doing software development for nearly 13 years, and would love to help your team out with any React or React Native project! It's my wheelhouse.

* I write code like the big companies - and I enforce unit tests, CI/CD, and clean code. I can do all the setup, too!

* I have no problem coming up with deadlines and communicating with the business. As a fundamental rule, I am always transparent and honest about my work. Need me to break down tasks, assign them out, and play project manager? I can do that, too!

* I love mentoring and helping others. Any developers under my wing will learn everything I know. I've worked at IBM, multiple staffing firms, and other small shops so I've seen it all! I am a very kind and bubbly person, so any developer will always feel safe to ask me questions and learn.

* I'm a US Citizen living in Dallas, Texas, and I add diversity to your team, as a woman!

summertime42··on Ask HN: How do you manage – and remember to manage – your to-do list in 2022?
Habitica! It's really dorky, but it's a great way to make me do anything. (https://habitica.com/)
summertime42··on Would senior engineers be interested in working reduced hours or part time?
Part of the reason I went freelance. If I can't get 4 day weeks, then I'll work for 6-8 months then take off just as long. I need breaks and I can't work on W2 ever again because of it.
summertime42··on Ask HN: Do you have to use LinkedIn to get hired?
Thank you for putting a verb to that! I didn't know the correct term, but I got a sense that recruiters are always 'looking' for people.
summertime42··on Ask HN: Do you have to use LinkedIn to get hired?
Last 2 gigs were directly through LinkedIn, so to me, it's a huge win. If a good recruiter/lead contacts me, I get their email and add them to my 'rolodex' so I can contact them when I need a future job.

However, 98% of it is total and complete garbage. Unfollow everyone. Follow 2-5 people you actually care about. Ignore spam messages - don't even get emotional about your time being wasted - just delete it and move on.

summertime42··on Ask HN: Current Rates for Software Development
For freelance / C2C, remote

5-7 years of exp - $75+ an hour

I've been slowly going up from that, currently at $135 an hour. Wanting to hit $150 next.
