sumeno··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
> It's a shame all these very picky recruitment processes and 'culture' of these giant companies didn't care about ethics and morality.

Oh, it absolutely does, just not in the direction that's good for society. OpenAI (as one example) didn't become like this by accident, it was intentional. Sam Altman isn't going to hire ethical leadership for his company, they would just get in his way.

sumeno··on A new way to reflect on how you use Claude
Tell that to our employers
sumeno··on New AI tutor achieves 0.71-1.30 SD effect size in Dartmouth course [pdf]
This is such a lazy response to every LLM criticism
sumeno··on New AI tutor achieves 0.71-1.30 SD effect size in Dartmouth course [pdf]
What do you think tutoring is? Because it's not just extra quizzes
sumeno··on The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the Swedish Örebro party
He's a racist that doesn't think races should mix
sumeno··on Dostoyevsky isn't difficult
Funny, I'm rereading Crime and Punishment for the first time since high school and I can't get over how much Raskolnikov comes off as an angsty teenager. I probably understand him better now but related to him more as a teen
sumeno··on Dostoyevsky isn't difficult
I mean, yeah, if I wasn't a native speaker I'd find those confusing, especially Margaret and Peg
sumeno··on Dostoyevsky isn't difficult
If I hadn't grown up hearing those nicknames I would find them confusing as well. It's not natural for a non-native speaker to figure out Dunya, Dunechka, and Avdotya are the same person.

Similarly, Dmitri Prokofych Razumikhin is referred to as Razumikhin 95% of the time, then suddenly people are referring to Dimitry Prokofych and I've got to look up who that is.

"I've driven drunk enough times to know I'd never cause an accident"
sumeno··on Norway imposes near ban on AI in elementary school
> If we want to ban models in school, ban laptops/chromebooks with internet.

Now we're talkin'

I'm all for it, let's teach kids the fundamentals of the world without relying on computers before we introduce them

sumeno··on Can Europe train a frontier AI model on the compute it owns?
The founding fathers created a document that was already struggling with modern realities prior to Trump. 250 years is not a particularly impressive amount of time for a country to not fall apart.
sumeno··on AI is code – and can't be prompted into being smarter
If I put a project on github that says "don't use this with mysql" and you use it with mysql and it drops your tables is it sql injection? Seems very different to me.
sumeno··on How to earn a billion dollars
Let's give it a try and see. Maybe better things ARE possible
sumeno··on How to earn a billion dollars
How about we set up that safety net first for once then?

You don't put on your seat belt during an accident, you don't start driving until it is on.

sumeno··on Not everyone is using AI for everything
You are playing a role at every job. In 20+ years I've never had a job where there would be no negative consequences for speaking truth to power
sumeno··on How to earn a billion dollars
Easy to say it all worked out fine when you aren't one of the people who was displaced. They might feel differently.

It may have worked out fine for humanity as a whole, but it ignores the suffering of a lot of people.

sumeno··on Meta’s chaotic AI strategy
The emphatic literally has been in use for over 300 years, it's time to let it go
sumeno··on Amazon CEO's talks with U.S. officials triggered crackdown on Anthropic models
Yeah... because Amazon is famous for caring about safety over profits...
sumeno··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
It's more like a hypothetical world where there were millions of smokers and none of them ever developed lung cancer
sumeno··on Ask HN: Are most corporate SWE jobs performative?
Managers DO cross team boundaries though, their peers are other managers. I can't talk to the 100 people in my department every week, but my manager can talk to their 9 peers, who each talk to their 10 reports.
sumeno··on German ruling declares Google liable for false answers in AI Overviews
Yeah, it would take me about 15 minutes to find several examples of people on HN claiming hallucinations are a solved problem
sumeno··on Cleaning up after AI rockstar developers
If a neighbor leaves their dog's poop in my yard I have a problem. If someone builds an industrial scale dog poop delivery mechanism that delivers tons of dog poop to my yard every day I have a different problem even though the underlying basics are the same.
sumeno··on Cleaning up after AI rockstar developers
There's a difference between introducing new things because they are a well thought out appropriate choice and completely ignoring the standards of the company because you want to do resume driven development. I believe the author is talking about the latter.
sumeno··on Cleaning up after AI rockstar developers
It's different because LLMs can generate code that immediately needs to be refactored at speeds that were unfeasible before. There was a practical limit on the amount of technical debt that could be created in a day before, now that limit is 10x or 100x higher. It can be generated far faster than it can be fixed.
sumeno··on Cleaning up after AI rockstar developers
I don't think you know what deterministic means
sumeno··on We Think the SpaceX IPO Is Overvalued
From your lips to god's ear
sumeno··on We Think the SpaceX IPO Is Overvalued
SpaceX is not being valued based on the space part, it's being valued based on Musk's claim that the market for their AI is the entire GDP of the United States. The space stuff is only estimated as about 1% of their addressable market
sumeno··on We Think the SpaceX IPO Is Overvalued
Even SpaceX's own documents estimate the space stuff to only have an addressable market of $370B, and it's not like it's a document full of conservative estimates considering they estimate their AI at approximately the entire GDP of the United States.
sumeno··on We Think the SpaceX IPO Is Overvalued
There is no benefit, and they aren't going to actually do it in any meaningful way. When was the last time Elon Musk made a factual forward looking statement about one of his companies or products? It's all just bullshit, no need to dig deeper than that.
sumeno··on We Think the SpaceX IPO Is Overvalued
Half a billion in JUST the rocket launches, you've still got to build the actual data center too.

That's assuming he can get launches down to $10 million which I'm sure will be right behind his flying roadster and cybertruck boat
