sudojudo··on Stanford researchers show fracking's impact to drinking water sources
My partner works in civil engineering and water remediation throughout Wyoming. Most farmers and ranchers there aren't too keen on fracking, because they suffer from the practice more than anyone (runoff/polluted water tables). But, there's no chance for any sort of political opposition, because the vast majority of people simply won't vote blue, no matter what. Often times, on the city/county level, there is no alternative candidate, it's red vs. red and neither want to "take away jobs" by buying into "leftist tree-hugger" nonsense.

It will only change when the "jobs" are cleaning up the mess, which has already started, but most roughnecks aren't qualified; cleanup requires educated city-folk from out of town, which widens the us vs. them gap even more.

I'm generalizing, but the above is often exactly the case.

sudojudo··on Are You More Likely to Be a Baker If You’re Named “Baker”?
Exactly. Trade related surnames weren't forged over generations, they were given to, or forced upon, one person in a specific time and location.

* Farmer was a tax collector (fermier), where Franklin was a successful farmer who owned land.

* Brewster and Baxter were women brewers, not much opportunity for a long line of those.

* Fuller had an ancestor who pounded wool and clay with a hammer, they took the place of people who did it with their feet, the Walkers.

It's fun to think about, especially for those who have a name like Faulkner. But, many of these trades/technologies were a flash-in-the-pan that lasted just a few generations (e.g. Parsons, Warner, Stoddard), during a time when western civilization was incredibly unstable.

sudojudo··on Generational Differences on Social Media
The thing that bothers me about generational stereotypes in this context is that they assume everyone is an exhibitionist and an extrovert. Not everyone is interested in social networking.

Never in my life have I put anything truly personal online; not when I was in school, not when I was single, not even when I was drunk. With a couple of exceptions, most of my friends are the same, regardless of their age.

These types of social networking services attract a certain type of person, just as much as they attract certain age groups. Yes, there are more younger people on them, but there are more young people online in general. Lots of us stick to our little corners of the net, or wherever, and couldn't care less about the "look at me" circus.
