I don't have enough karma to downvote comments...but thanks for rubbing it in though. That's a beautiful tall horse your on by the way.

This particular comment got flagged, which is great. That being said, I can't count the number of times I've had someone reply to me with "Switch to Linux"...and I can't downvote that. Signal to noise?

The rules are unevenly applied. For instance, a couple of weeks ago one of those "Isn't RMS Awesome!" posts came up. I expressed a sentiment that was counter to the glowing praise people where heaping on the guy's article. I wasn't rude, but I do disagree with the guys positions on somethings and expressed that. It started being downvoted immediately...I was close to 200 at that point so I actually wrote a BS set of pablum replies and they were upvoted so I regained the karma.

Its frustrating.

The post did get flagged, which is a nice change. I personally get seriously tired of constant slashdot-isms that are used in posts regarding MS.

Man, the downvotes is hard in here.

In case everyone couldn't tell I think that the incessant posting of "embrace, extend, extinguish" are really childish so I replied childishly. Do we need a sarcasm tag?

EDIT: One day I will too be able to down-vote and then woe to you all. woe to you all. OH WHAT DOWN VOTES I WILL BRING!!!

EDIT EDIT: That's great advice friendly friend but I don't have enough karma to down-vote. Way to rub it in though...

I think that FP gets a lot of coverage on this site because it's an interesting topic to lots of us...even though most of us won't ever even attempt it beyond a few samples.

That being said...SICP 4 LIFE!

Yay! OpenBSD does great work, I'm glad they are getting serious support now. Hopefully other large vendors do the same thing...I'm looking at you Intel, HP...
sudioStudio64··on Ask HN: What is the actual purpose of Docker?
I think the main thing is to provide an abstraction for applications so that they aren't tightly coupled to the operating system of the server that's hosting them. That's a big deal.

Some people have mentioned security...patching in particular. Containers won't help if you don't have patching down. At the very least it lets you patch in the lab and easily promote the entire application into production.

I think that the security arguments are a canard. By making it easier and faster to deploy you should be able to patch app dependencies as well. I, for one, would automate the download and install of the latest version of all libs in a container as part of the app build process. Hell, build them all from source.

IT departments need to be able to easily move applications around instead of the crazy build docs that have been thrown over the wall for years.

Wow. That's a really cool idea. I'm really interested in where this goes from a networking nerd point of view.

81 years of bad faith? It's that kind of language that makes this difficult.

Onerous acquisition regimes were put in place for machine guns because of the psychopaths that were running from county to county gunning down law enforcement officers. That's the thing, the law in question wasn't a beachhead to take more of your stuff...they may have actually wanted to make sure that we didn't have a wave of new Machine Gun Kelly's running around.

Does your dad remember how it used to be for everyone or just people like you? I'm not trying to be too facetious, here. My dad mentions a time when you could take a sack of squirrels to the doctor for payment as an example of the good ole' days...but I don't think that's a good idea just because it worked for him and my grandfather. (Though I still like squirrel stew.)

Many, many, things are different between now and the 40 s including all of the weird social/psychological pressures that are at the root of many school shootings. Hell, when I was a kid I remember seeing people have deer rifles in their gun rack in their truck at school. (I was very little.) Would that be a good idea today? Surely, I don't have to answer that question...because things have changed. Radically.

What would be a place where we could compromise? Is it even possible? What's an area where you think there is some give and take on?

sudioStudio64··on De-Obfuscating the Statistics of Mass Shootings
I have never... and I mean this... never heard an anti-gun person say that we should go door to door and take guns from people. I'm just saying.

I take your point, I really do, but I think that you are overestimating the desire to have a meaningful debate on the progun side. The two sides are not equally obstructive or vitriolic. They just aren't. Perhaps you have heard people like me... some guy on a forum... say something bombastic, but the progun leadership are purveyors of extreme fear mongering and slander of their fellow citizens that disagree with them. They equate compromise with appeasement and negotiation with collaboration. Gun control people don't go around threatening armed rebellion.

I'm sorry for going on, but I get really tired of the way that no one seems to be able to change their mind. A large chunk of the vehement progun crowd are also fundamentalists who think the world is six thousand years old. I grew up around them. I'm very clear about their position.

Joe the Plumber: "Your Dead Kids Don’t Trump My Constitutional Rights"

I appreciate your point and what you are trying to say, please don't think I'm being disrespectful... In fact, I'm kind of typing out loud, if you will. I'm still coming to grips with my own changes of position on the issue. Its really difficult. Its such a foundational issue where I'm from. Its at least as big a deal as coming to grips with being an atheist. Its really about identity at a core level... and being able to really look at those deeply held ideas in the face of a life that contradicts them.

My bad...i'll stop. Cheers.

sudioStudio64··on De-Obfuscating the Statistics of Mass Shootings
Do you fault the progun people who over emphasize the successful prevention of home invasion by a gun owner even though its a statistical anomaly compared to a wife being killed by her husband? Or any close associate or family, for that matter.

So rather than remove some of the ease with which people obtain firearms, why don't we build a European style welfare state and decriminalize drugs? I'm all for it. How likely is that?

Progun forces describe their opponents as actual traitors that are actively trying to destroy the basics of what makes us a free people... for regulating a dangerous consumer product. When you start policing their tactics I will take you seriously, until then I support anything that defeats them.

Gosh, there was a time in Texas when you could get ex soviet weapons like the SKS for 90$. Granted that was thirty years ago...

You are very evenhanded about this subject. I would like to thank you for it.

sudioStudio64··on De-Obfuscating the Statistics of Mass Shootings
I think that sounds completely reasonable.
sudioStudio64··on De-Obfuscating the Statistics of Mass Shootings
I have friends who have class 3 licences and they say that the strictures in place on automatic weapons are why you don't see then used in crimes very often. They are heavily regulated and tracked.

As to your point, I don't fault the antigun crowd for using any tactics that work. The progun crowd is certainly guilty of he same thing.

That's absolutely true. The discussions on this site tend to the abstract and miss this point.

I'm with you there.

A couple of years ago a group of people that I was attracted to due to their professed reliance on reason and scientific method turned out to be virulently anti-female.

And then this fringe hatefulness just seems to have pervaded everything...even computing forums that are dedicated to what I thought were relatively dispassionate topics that are quite arcane have had death threats lobbed at people who just have a different opinion. It's fucking weird.

sudioStudio64··on Front Page Subreddits Go Private in Response to Firing of Reddit Admin
The people claiming that Reddit needs to be more consistent keep saying that they only censor something when it bubbles up to the top. That's pretty much the only content moderation model that has EVER worked. No one likes it, and it seems hypocritical, but its what the entire internet does.

Look at Google. France complains about Nazi related material. They block Nazi material in France. They index massive amounts of porn, and take down individual images that offend people. It's sub-optimal, but it largely works.

Now, the thing that has changed is that normal people have started getting a dose of the kind of speech that they consider "hate speech" IRL from sites like Reddit. What they are demanding is that fringe positions remain fringe positions.

Something as mainstream as Reddit will not be allowed to serve up red pill/racist/homophobe/far-right content. They will keep doing this stuff until that content goes somewhere else. Maybe that's a good thing...I don't know, but at least having it in one place made it easy to see what crazy people are up to these days. Know your enemy, etc.

As for the corporate thing...that's always going to seem schizophrenic...corporations aren't rational people. They make snap decisions that seem reasonable in the moment because they lack functional memories. Fuck em.

Want something different? Find a way to spread the cost of running something like Reddit over a larger group of people in a decentralized model. And then get ready for the us vs them to move to "inner circle" vs "outer circle"...

sudioStudio64··on Front Page Subreddits Go Private in Response to Firing of Reddit Admin
The intense vitriol about Ellen Pao makes me very suspicious of most complaints from vocal redditors.

I'm not even really sure why the anti-fem crowd hates her so much. But man...wow.

If some of the things that I've read today are to be believed, the firing of this admin was a stupid act. Reddit and several other "web 2.0" companies made it big on "user generated content" which always seemed like it had the potential to turn into a gross corporate overlord milking their user-cow for all it's worth.

It seems like there are a lot of valley companies that just want to slap a sticker on your culture and hand it back to you. Or they want to say that the rules don't apply to them because they are so new and communicate with their employees through an app or some other horse shit.

In the end, it sounds like this young woman (the admin they fired) did her job well and it sucks when people aren't rewarded for that.

LP needs to know that there is basically nothing that he can say that the vitriolic people will accept. He will always be evil and out to get their "free-dums".

This is such a non-issue. How many people build systemd from scratch? Distro's all do their own thing for system time.
