one thing I'm really hoping for is more support for calendars. I see no way to view / change the color of events. while I can add them to categories, it is much easier for me to color code them.
sublupo··on Patreon suspended my account. They have not notified me
SubscribeStar tried to do that exact thing, and they succeeded for a little while. Then PayPal decided to freeze their account. My guess is because many people started to contact PayPal and said that SubscribeStar wasn't censoring people with wrong-think like Patreon just started to do.
sublupo··on GoDaddy is a scam
Correct, I moved the goalpost because, thanks to your comment, I realized that saying that NameCheap is just as scammy as GoDaddy is an exaggeration. Nonetheless, I wouldn't trust a site with ads that outright lie. It's not like we are forced to choose between GoDaddy and NameCheap. There are other options that don't reserve searched domains, and don't show ads that lie. Since that is the case, I will opt for one of those other sites when looking to purchase a domain.
sublupo··on GoDaddy is a scam
Let me rephrase it. It is not scammy like GoDaddy, but it is scammy like when a newspaper publishes sponsored content.

It is not that important what happened behind the scene. In the end, I went to their site and I saw something that was not clearly marked as an ad. The listing looked almost exactly like their other listings. There, there was a button that said "buy", I clicked it and was unable to buy. It is the responsibility of NameCheap to make sure that their ads are not scammy. Just like if Facebook started showing porn ads, there would be blowback and people will stop using FAcebook.

Yes they do, see my other comment:

Namecheap is also scammy. I searched for a random URL (smithstein.co.ru) and it said that while they don't sell co.ru they sell smithstein.com ( https://i.ibb.co/FxmMH81/Screenshot-20181212-133716.png ) . After clicking the button to buy it shows an error ( https://i.ibb.co/2Zbp7hB/Screenshot-20181212-133828.png ) and then when trying to search for smithstein.com I am given the option to make an offer (ie. not buy because someone else owns it)

sublupo··on Tell HN: In NSW, if Google doesn't track you, you can't pay Public School fees
and don't think about doing that while in a country where you don't know their native language. The challenge that Google gives you will be in that language, with no way to change it to English
sublupo··on The World's Most Efficient Languages (2016)
> In a Native American language of California called Atsugewi (now extinct), if a tree was burned and we found the ashes in a creek afterward, we would have said that soot w’oqhputíc’tainto the creek. W’oqhputíc’ta is a conglomeration of bits that mean “it moved like dirt, in a falling fashion, into liquid, and for real.” In English, we would just say “flowed.”

I realized something like that in English when translating. The word "slay" means, according to a basic dictionary, to kill (violently). But to an English speaker it means much more. I wouldn't say that a school shooter slayed the children, rather shot. The Boston bomber didn't slay the runners, but rather bombed. I would consider slaying to be an act done by a sword. But, in the case of a terrorist stabbing people, I would call that a stabbing, not staying. I would say that slaying is only appropriate if the sword attack was going across a body and not directly into, like with stabbing.

sublupo··on Half the land in Oklahoma could be returned to Native Americans. It should be
You infer incorrectly. Regardless to what Congress will decide in this case, land that was sold will not go back to the previous owners.
sublupo··on Half the land in Oklahoma could be returned to Native Americans. It should be
My issue with that is who should it be returned to? The people who it was taken from and who took it are long dead. Is one person more deserving of the land simply because they can trace their ancestry to someone who used to own that land? See my comment here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18558224 to see the issue with it.
sublupo··on Half the land in Oklahoma could be returned to Native Americans. It should be
> Today, we still lose land every time an acre is sold to a non-Indian, inherited by someone less than half blood quantum, or even when an owner lifts restrictions to qualify for a mortgage

I don't see how that would be effected by the Congress. If Congress allocated land to the natives, but then the natives sold it (I assume not of fair grounds, but still...) then the Congress cannot return the land to the natives.

sublupo··on Half the land in Oklahoma could be returned to Native Americans. It should be
The question of how to repay generational theft is a difficult one. So many people have been wronged historically, and almost no nation / aristocrat has got their land "ethically".

If Oklahoma were to be "returned" to the Cherokee leaders, would they have to return it to who ever the Cherokee battled to get the land in the first place? But America is relatively easy to determine. What about land that has been "stollen" throughout history. Should Israel be "returned" to the British, Ottoman (Turkey), Momluk (Egypt), Mongols, Crusaders (British), Islamic Caliphate (Iraq), Byzantine (Greek?), Romans (Italians, I guess), Jews, Babylonians (Iraq), Jews again, or to the nations that lived there over 4000 years ago and no longer exists?

There has to be some form of statute of limitations, no matter how unfair life is. I mean, why should that author get millions of acres of land in America, when there are dense slums in India, who have a much greater need for it?

sublupo··on Helsinki to Begin Anonymous Recruiting
It's not being hostile, it's more than that. For example, if I invite my men co-workers to go swimming then there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But if I invite my women co-workers, then it could be interpreted in a bad way.
sublupo··on Facebook policy chief admits hiring PR firm to attack George Soros
> 3

That's ridiculous. Every antisemite eats, does that make eating antisemitic? Most people on the right don't like when Soros pays for protestors. 75% of Orthodox Jews support Trump. Most of whom I assume disagree with Soros. Are they also antisemitic?

sublupo··on Nearly 3,000 Votes Disappeared From Florida’s Recount
The reason that they have time limits is to prevent what just happened. After the time limit was over, candidate A had more votes. The people in charge of the polling stations were supporters of B (is this information important?). After the time limit they "found" more uncounted votes. However since the time limit was up, something illegal happened. Should we let the organizers "find" more votes (possibly illegally, possibly due to incompetence). Should we invalidate legal votes because the people in charge of the polls are incompetent?

The current solution is to have an elected official appoint the overseers of the polls. If the overseers do something that could make election fraud easier (like "finding" votes after counting some of them), then the people in charge are fired.

sublupo··on ProtonMail: Alleged data breach was a “hoax and failed extortion attempt”
I tend not to trust ProtonMail that much after seeing this thread: https://old.reddit.com/r/ProtonVPN/comments/8ww4h2/protonvpn... This is a reddit thread that criticizes ProtonVPN (same company as ProtonMain). The mod in charge of the sub offers a rebuttal to a criticism against them. Afterwards, the mod in charge of that sub locks it thereby preventing the accuser the ability to reply to that claim.

Now it is possible that nothing wrong happened, but every time a business tries to censor a criticism against them, I tend not to give the business the benefit of the doubt.

I've wondered for a while how to do that. Is there a JavaScript function that modifies the status bar?

sublupo··on Florida passes Amendment Four, restoring voting rights to convicted felons
Because democracy only works when the voters are good. If a large majority of voters were Nazis then a Hitler would be elected. Similarly, I wouldn't want people who are proven to do something criminal to influence who becomes my leader.

sublupo··on How I Lent My Camera Kit and Had It ‘Legally Stolen’
It seems pretty obvious that the author was wronged by the renter. Also, it looks like this is not the first time that the robber stole something (illegally, even though the insurance is exempt from paying). So then why is the author hiding the robbers identity? In this case I would hope that the author would display all known pictures and information about the robber, in hopes that he will be found out at least shamed.

That is because those things are illegal. Until saying Nazi ideology becomes illegal there should be a place for them in order to ensure free speech.
