sub7··on Mozilla exits the Fediverse and will shutter its Mastodon server in December
Here's a fun exercise - capture all the traffic Firefox sends to mozilla.com/org and mozgcp.net etc

It's a shocking amount of telemetry, combined with dark patterns to reset settings on every update.

Then you go to their website and see that "safe and private" is part of the headline sales pitch. Absolutely disgraceful.

sub7··on Pivotal Tracker will shut down
IMO all of these todo list apps are the same - no moat and not useful enough to be critical for anyone or anything.

No idea how Asana is still valued at $3B it's literally just notepad with checkboxes.

sub7··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
Remote work leads to less productivity, this isn't really doubted by anyone not working remotely. At-will employment means either party is free to walk away for reasons like this and that's exactly how it should be.

Surprised it's taken companies this long - I guess it's much harder to rollback than implement this so there will be a set of companies which just suffer on growth/performance and that'll be justification enough for the next cohort to go back to allowing remote work in edge cases only.

sub7··on Structured Outputs in the API
To "look up all my orders in May that were fulfilled and not delivered" is a 1 line query in every ORM I know of.

Why in the world would I literally pass around a schema file with each request that is (according to the example) 91 lines of code and pay someone for the privilege of maybe doing it correctly?

sub7··on Twitter kills its San Francisco headquarters, will relocate to South Bay
I saw a guy get shot on Mission and 6th after picking a fight with the car in front of him at the light. Lucky for him, there was an ambulance already on the block loading up a tweaked out junkie.
sub7··on Every company should be owned by its employees
For private startups, all common stock should be given proportional participation rights in all secondary sales.

All too often founders can and do derisk/cash out in funding rounds and then the common stock winds up at 0. Employees = fucked

sub7··on Silicon Valley's best kept secret: Founder liquidity
I was an early (first 5) dev at a company now valued north of $5B

I have seen only a few hundred k so far while both founders have bought over $30m of real estate and who knows what else...

sub7··on Wind farms can offset their emissions within two years, new study shows
can you bring the birds back though?
sub7··on Over the edge: The use of design tactics to undermine browser choice
They're actually doing some pretty nice things with Edge despite these evil anti-competitive UIs/ad injections. I'd add telemetry to the list too, but since Mozilla does a lot of that they probably won't write up a nice doc like this on it.

It is possible to get a clean Edge build running via containerization + disabling some Windows background services + blocking outbound/inbound requests to various Microsoft + partner IP addresses. Big hassle though.

sub7··on The Apple Vision Pro’s missing apps
If businesses don't buy these in bulk, this will be an Apple Newton v2. Likely to be uncomfortable/look stupid and be stupidly overpriced as well for what you get.

I'm sure Apple is in a much better position than in the mid 90s so they can probably absorb bad sales and these headsets will shrink down soon enough and get killer apps and get cheaper so the real question is who's going to build the Android of VR and take the non-walled garden market?

sub7··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
Just imagine Microsoft charging $1 for every .exe installer clicked on in Windows 95.

Apple's total failure to build popular new products has forced it to defend/grow it's services revenue in unethical and anti-user ways. The only winners here are $aapl stock holders and at great cost to global progress and fairness.

Tim Cook of all people should sympathize with developers everywhere getting it in the ass without consent.

sub7··on Tell HN: YouTube beat uBlock Origin on Firefox
Today Android Auto pops up a notification saying "Spotify is not supported" and proceeds to fill half my car screen with a Youtube Music promo while disabling BT media controls for spotify.

This company is off the rails, they need to hard fire all the MBA-type idiots making their products shittier in misguided attempts at services revenue generation. When was the last time anyone had a good experience using this garbage?

sub7··on Bluesky now checks against this array of slurs when creating a username
This is so laughable, like these pajeets think that blocking the word golliwog on their so called open protocol of future communication will stop it from turning into a cheap 4chan clone

The solution to slurs and insults is always to let them speak and let them be ridiculed, not arbitrary censorship that will never be effective other than to give the platform a veneer of "we've done something" credibility

sub7··on Binance commingled customer funds and company revenue, former insiders say
Most crypto grifters have cashed out, moved on to other projects, and are keen for people to forget that chapter.

There is still a monumental amount of notional markups that need to be erased - this is not a real market and there is no real price discovery. The real $ have been round tripped many times over, I don't think there's a single "stablecoin" out there that's worth any constant amount.

sub7··on MouthPad – In-Mouth Bluetooth Mouse Uses Tongue Sensitive Trackpad
knew a few guys working on an eye tracking mouse (clicking was still manual)

pretty cool

sub7··on Sundar Pichai received $226M compensation, boosted by a triennial stock grant
Google, FB, MSFT all have the same problem - way too many overpaid, under-working employees who either give no shits or are in systems where giving a shit doesn't work

I'd have fired harder and double cleaned the house

sub7··on 12-year-olds can't buy cigarettes – but they can work in tobacco fields
imo 12 year old working a field is ok
sub7··on 60M Americans have taxes so simple the IRS could do them automatically
We've actually known this for decades and Intuit has hard lobbied and prevented sensible laws being passed and killed (so far) a "government option" tax filing website.

I've always thought they were on borrowed time for TurboTax but here we are 10-15 years later and nothing at all has changed.

sub7··on Virgin Orbit to lay off 85 percent of staff, freeze operations
Oops a Chamath SPAC turned out to be just a vehicle to fleece retail?

It is truly amazing what you can legally get away with

sub7··on CFTC sues Binance and CEO Changpeng Zhao [pdf]
It's not over until $usdt falls - but Binance was basically a more competent FTX so this is a good development
sub7··on We asked the SEC for reasonable crypto rules for Americans
Enjoy the unbanked life Coinbase!
sub7··on Stripe faces $3.5B tax bill as employees' shares expire
Stripe was trading at $150 a share in the private market which valued it at ~$135B at some point. I think the investors who got in at $10B would be lucky to see a return.

My guess is founder/early employee stock has already exited as much as possible and notional value still on the books will be mostly wiped out

Stripe is a super paranoid company that knows it's valuation is tied to it's hype and they spend absurd $ on legal and "business intelligence" because the truth is they are really just a nicely documented API that any regulated entity can provide.

If/when they stop subsidizing their growth with investor $, Stripe common stock = 0

sub7··on Virtual DOM is pure overhead (2018)
If I see html in a javascript file, I boycott the codebase
sub7··on Market Annealing: Getting to $10M ARR in Early Markets
a16z is now a glorified shitcoin criminal enterprise. I urge everyone to never let them participate in a round ever again.

Failure of fiduciary duties fucked over their LPs and their shitcoin pump/dumps fucked over retail.

They'll now try to salvage their brand but a perma-ban is in order IMO

sub7··on All companies are fucked up
cope harder

if Gemini was a person it'd be the lovechild of Madoff and a sewer rat

sub7··on Remote startups will win the war for top talent
this is false - remote teams are exponentially less productive

maybe linearly less productive if remote from day 1

clever marketing hack for the author's startup though

sub7··on Google Search Results Plagued with spam “.it” domains
This headline would be accurate without the “.it” domains part
sub7··on Filecoin Virtual Machine – Polyglot, WASM-based execution environment
Please post a chart of miner payouts per gb per hour for the past 5 years.

And then post the Protocol Labs cap table inception + changes over the same time frame.

And then post the FIL loan books from the biggest miners/market makers.

And then you will have actually done research and likely will stop shitposting

sub7··on Filecoin Virtual Machine – Polyglot, WASM-based execution environment
You all should, as the bitidiots say, do your own research
sub7··on Filecoin Virtual Machine – Polyglot, WASM-based execution environment
My comment had no questions, but thanks for making yourself available. I'll be happy to share all kinds of details from 2017 onwards, but only with someone from the SEC/CFTC. This, sadly, is very correct. I am the source.
