stygiansonic··on Recursive Recipes
This would transform the dependency graph from a DAG to one with cycles and thus the recipe could not be resolved
stygiansonic··on HAProxy is not affected by the HTTP/2 Rapid Reset Attack

After rigorous testing, we have been able to confirm that our implementation of the HTTP/2 protocol can handle the Rapid Reset Attack without increasing the resource usage or compromising the parallelism of the protocol.
But doesn’t this mean the servers behind the reverse proxy would still suffer from increased/wasted resources responding to the rapid reset requests?
stygiansonic··on Kullback–Leibler divergence
There’s some information here about why this was chosen. Specifically it fulfills certain criteria: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropy_(information_theory)...
stygiansonic··on Mounting your iPhone on your motorcycle can damage its camera (2022)
This isn’t about the CCD or sensor failing. It is about the OIS and AF systems failing from vibrations, both of which (to my knowledge) involve mechanical movement.
stygiansonic··on Llama 2
Should have been an asterisk on the headline like “free … for commercial* use”
stygiansonic··on Court denies FTC last-ditch attempt to stop Microsoft buying Activision Blizzard
The earlier story was the denial of the preliminary injunction which was appealed. This story is about the denial of the appeal, or roughly thereabouts.

So not technically a dupe.

stygiansonic··on Update Your Bitbucket Cloud SSH Host Keys
The key parts

We recently learned that encrypted copies of Bitbucket’s SSH host keys were included in a data breach of a third-party credential management vendor. The SSH protocol uses host keys to establish the identity of a trusted server for every SSH connection, like when a git pull establishes a SSH connection to Bitbucket Cloud.

In response, Bitbucket issued two new SSH host keys today and will be replacing the current host keys on June 20, 2023. Please review this blog and complete the applicable steps outlined below as soon as possible.

I'm not a security expert, but isn't it concerning that their SSH host private key was even accessible this way? (In a "third-party credential management vendor")

stygiansonic··on Contempt Culture (2015)
Anecdotally, I experienced the same thing the author mentioned: Specially Python developer's disdain for Java. At more than one local Python meetup there were numerous jabs thrown at Java, or jokes made at its expense, with the implication that Java was inferior to Python.

FWIW, I never experienced the inverse when talking to Java developers.

stygiansonic··on PaLM 2 Technical Report [pdf]
In that sense, it's very similar to the GPT-4 Technical Report.

The era of being "open" about LLMs or other "secret sauce" models in published papers may be over, since these things have become existential threats to companies.

stygiansonic··on An example of LLM prompting for programming
The difference is that folks had an incentive to make their pages easily indexable: drive page views.

With becoming training data the incentive to the creators is a little less clear

stygiansonic··on Google to cut down on employee laptops, services and staplers
“We have been asked to pull all tape/dispensers through out the building,” a San Francisco facility directive stated. “If you need a stapler or tape, the receptionist desk has them to borrow.”
stygiansonic··on March 20 ChatGPT outage: Here’s what happened
The key part:

If a request is canceled after the request is pushed onto the incoming queue, but before the response popped from the outgoing queue, we see our bug: the connection thus becomes corrupted and the next response that’s dequeued for an unrelated request can receive data left behind in the connection.

stygiansonic··on Jaccard Index
The name may be an example of this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stigler%27s_law_of_eponymy

It was developed by Grove Karl Gilbert in 1884 as his ratio of verification (v)[1] and now is frequently referred to as the Critical Success Index in meteorology.[2] It was later developed independently by Paul Jaccard…

stygiansonic··on Airport runway names shift with magnetic field
My understanding is that the change in magnetic declination (caused by the change in magnetic north) is predictable in the short term (this is why maps state the rate of change but only for a certain time period) but is not predictable over the long term.

stygiansonic··on PFC bans are going to change waterproof garments
So your sweat is able to evaporate through the membrane leaving you dry? This is the biggest issue I’ve had with so called “breathable” membranes. (I assume you still sweat in < 45F weather because I still sweat even in freezing temperatures when running, depending on other conditions, etc)
stygiansonic··on KeePassXC: Beware of unofficial Microsoft Store listing
Wow, the fake listing even links to the official GitHub repo giving the impression it’s from the same org/people.
stygiansonic··on An incident impacting 5M accounts and private information on Twitter
The full sentence states:

While no passwords were exposed, we encourage everyone who uses Twitter to enable 2-factor authentication using authentication apps or hardware security keys to protect your account from unauthorized logins.

So it actually does not imply adding a phone number, which is seemingly what you have tried to imply with the cut-off quote provided.

stygiansonic··on ShotSpotter requests to be held in contempt rather than disclose its methodology
Wow, thanks for the link. I had no idea about this.

Promotional material issued by ATSC claimed that the ADE 651 could detect such item as guns, ammunition, drugs, truffles, human bodies, contraband ivory and bank notes at distances of up to 1 kilometre (0.62 mi), underground, through walls, underwater or even from aircraft at an altitude of up to 5 kilometres (3.1 mi).[12] In a promotional video, McCormick claimed that the device could detect elephants from 48 kilometres (30 mi) away.[13]

stygiansonic··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
What do you mean they can just leave work earlier? There are tons of jobs where the shift hours are defined, eg 9-5 or 8-4 and you can’t simply leave earlier.
stygiansonic··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
Edmonton, AB is at a higher latitude than Amsterdam and has a larger population. Calgary’s latitude is similar and also has a larger population than Amsterdam.
stygiansonic··on The Meme Leak Theory
Interesting, that is a good point: http://lawiscool.com/2010/02/22/are-there-inalienable-rights...

But the constitutional rights and freedoms such as freedom of expression, a right against arbitrary detention or imprisonment, and even our right to life, liberty and security, are not absolute. The Charter leaves loopholes for the federal Parliament, provincial legislatures, or even judges to limit or take away any rights or freedoms. There are no inalienable rights in Canada.
