styfle··on Low Cost Mini PCs
I did get a refund thankfully
styfle··on Low Cost Mini PCs
I haven’t bought a Windows PC in 10 years so I thought it was time to upgrade the old tower I had in the closet.

I stumbled across Mini PCs and was surprised at how cheap they were so I brought one.

Turns out they were lying about the clock speed, citing 3.4Ghz when it was actually 1.7GHz.

I contacted their support to say the description was wrong but they said it was right. Don’t buy from KAMRUI.

styfle··on Everybody gets a star: Yelp's effect on restaurants and reviews
I think many Americans rate 5 stars if the business met all their expectations and then remove a star for each unsatisfactory experience.

Reviews look something like “4 stars: I removed a star because...”

styfle··on Node.js adds experimental support for TypeScript
You can configure tsconfig.json to read JSDoc and error on invalid types so that you effectively get the same behavior as writing typescript.
styfle··on First anode-free sodium solid-state battery
The price of their cars did drop.

For example, look at the price of the Model Y over that time period.

styfle··on Airlines required to refund passengers for canceled, delayed flights
> The rules come after the agency handed Southwest Airlines a record $140 million fine for its operational meltdown during the 2022 holiday travel season.

I was one of the travelers impacted by that meltdown. I waited hours and hours in the airport because of “delays”. One by one, every flight was cancelled. Southwest made everyone wait in a single file line to rebook their flight a week or two out (of course after Christmas). A couple days later they cancelled that flight too. So they issued vouchers. No way I would use a voucher for an airline that can’t get it together. I’m glad there will be cash refunds now so folks don’t get trapped with a bad airline.

styfle··on Redis is forked
Don’t forget the Node.js and io.js fork. That’s one where the fork basically became the blessed branch and the two communities merged back together.
styfle··on Why does an extraneous build step make my Zig app 10x faster?
> By adding a benchmarking script to my continuous integration and archiving the results, it was easy for me to identify when my measurements changed.

This assumes CI runs on the same machine with same hardware every time, but most CI doesn’t do that.

styfle··on I'm going to keep opting out
This works for me, but many people who run their own business expect calls from unknown numbers since they are potential customers.

I’ve also had it backfire when my doctors office calls and they don’t use the same number that I called them from.

styfle··on I used to not worry about climate change. Now I do [video]
The article doesn’t seem to support your claim.

“After the ban came into force, global concentrations of CFC-11 declined steadily until about 2012. However, last year scientists discovered the pace of that slowdown slowed by half between 2013 and 2017. Because the chemical is not naturally occurring, the change could only have been produced by new emissions.”

“If emissions do not decline, it will delay the recovery of the Antarctic ozone hole, possibly for decades”

styfle··on The importance of cash in a technological society
I think the bigger thing that’s overlooked is that nearly every item today is priced assuming the 3% fee from credit cards.

So by not using a credit card, you’re not getting the 3% cash back (or rewards equivalent) and therefore paying more.

There are a handful of places that offer a discount if you pay with cash (or rather a fee if you pay with a card) in order to make these fees clear to the buyer, but it’s becoming rare. Usually gov websites like DMV or mom/pop shops.

styfle··on Leonard vs. Pepsico, Inc
No, the jet was only in the commercial (according to the documentary).

They thought they had a case since Pepsi “forgot” to put a fine-print disclaimer at the bottom like most other commercials.

styfle··on Leonard vs. Pepsico, Inc
The docuseries has a lot more information than the Wikipedia article.

For example, interviews with some of the people who worked on that Pepsi commercial.

Not every movie is watched for the outcome alone :)

styfle··on The inside story of Threads
Are any of the big email tools planning to add support for ActivityPub? They already have your corp domain so it feels natural. For example, I could see a future where MS Exchange has the ability to federate with Mastodon and optionally enable/disable employees through ActiveDirectory, etc.
styfle··on Asking 60 LLMs a set of 20 questions
Very cool!

I’ve been using Vercel’s AI Playground to ask questions to multiple LLMs at once (currently supports 24, not 60 however)

styfle··on A list of recent hostile moves by Google's Chrome team
Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if JXL gets implemented in Chrome after Safari and Firefox implementations are stabilized.
styfle··on Why doesn't TypeScript properly type Object.keys?
Nice explanation!

Although I’m surprised there is no mention of the best solution for iterating both keys and values:

for (const [key, val] of Object.entries(obj)) { console.log(key, val) }

styfle··on TypeScript 5.0
There's a section in the article called "Breaking Changes and Deprecations"

> TypeScript 5.0 has a minimum version requirement of at least Node.js 12.20 and later

https://devblogs.microsoft.com/typescript/announcing-typescr...

styfle··on TypeScript 5.0
> Typescript had experimental decorator support well before Angular Team moved from AtScript

Do you have a source for this. My memory isn't so good but I seem to remember that the Angular team pushed to get this Stage 0 proposal implemented even though the TypeScript team usually waits until Stage 2 or 3 to implement.

styfle··on Wasmer 3.0
The as-fetch readme says undici is faster (which is the implementation of fetch that shipped in Node.js 18).

So 7 weekly downloads sounds about right for an unknown package that is slower.
