stronglikedan··on Tell the speakers that you liked their talks
Yup. I take notes in front of the camera just to let the person know that I'm hearing them, even if I can't answer them in that moment. I also let them know about when I'll be able to get back to them. Goes a long way.
stronglikedan··on ER visits for gambling disorders doubled after expanded online gambling market
> is the sense that it wont immediately bankrupt you, yes, they are different.

also in the sense that you'll wait for a looong time to get treatment

stronglikedan··on California's High Speed Rail to Nowhere [video]
That one-party is a party of idealists that hardly ever bring any realistic solutions to the table, so I'm not surprised by that outcome.
stronglikedan··on How big are factorials?
52 cards is the first thing I think of when I think factorials. It's such a great and relatable way to convey the subject to people, plus it usually ends up blowing their minds like it did mine when I first learned of it. Not from this page, but from a YT vid many moons ago.
stronglikedan··on Show HN: Toast, a by default in-terminal IDE
Why? The source is available. That's all anyone ever needed before AI to determine whether they wanted to use it. Nothing has changed - any tool can be used to write good or bad code. The consumer should still be doing their due diligence.

> Liability doesn't fix the damage that is already done.

Neither does imprisoning murderers for life, but it's one heck of a deterrent.

stronglikedan··on Chopping up books when they're physically too big
The problem with ebooks is that you cannot be 100% certain that you're reading the original text. That can only be preserved in physical copies. That's why the destructive book scanning for AI is such a tragedy. There's already plenty of examples of original texts being surreptitiously revised, and it happens with videos too.
stronglikedan··on An update on Wayback Machine access
Yes, that's one acceptable alternative, and another commonly accepted alternative is API's. Although, I'm not sure why you included the asterisk.
stronglikedan··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
Sure, if you conveniently drop the qualifying word "radically". But that's not what was said. What was said specifically included the word "radically" for a good reason. Radical anything is a threat.
stronglikedan··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Yes, in the documentary The Walking Dead, when Rick's team attacked Negan's team while they were sleeping.

stronglikedan··on GPT-5.6 Luna vs. GPT-6 Astra: Is a $1.20 Model Good Enough for Code Review?
> You wouldn't ask an agent to review a PR then just copy/paste the output into the PR, would you?

I would if the PR was clearly written by AI. I'm fine with the PR author using AI, but only to draft the PR. They should be editing the shit out of it for the final version before submitting it.

stronglikedan··on Things That Annoy Me About Cars
Cool, my EV checks all these boxes. And as for the rear view mirror, I have the best of both worlds. Regular mirror, but if my back is full to the top (wagon), I flip a switch and it's a screen. I guess I got lucky since I didn't even know of any of these pitfalls when I impulse bought my EV strictly for the acceleration.
stronglikedan··on China's Regulators Take Aim at "AI Boyfriends"
I wonder how that looks per capita. I'd wager very similar between China and the US.

stronglikedan··on OpenAI bots knew about the RubyGems caching vulnerability
There have been news stories where individual OpenAI users have been investigated based on their prompts. If OpenAI can point the police to specific users of their software, they can certainly point them to whichever of their own employees are involved in a crime. AI is just a tool, and the person prompting it is the one responsible for the outcome. No dilution there.
stronglikedan··on Show HN: Bodily Oddities
I think I just learned that I have this! I usually sneeze when walking out of the house into the morning sun. And regardless of what makes me sneeze, it's rarely just one or two at a time.
stronglikedan··on Show HN: Bodily Oddities
I can't read stuff like this, and I can't self diagnose anything online. Once I realized that everything is a symptom of cancer in some form, all symptoms will lead to cancer if researched thoroughly enough.

That said, really good job here for those that can enjoy it without inducing panic attacks!

I group my cables too, but it's all one group in a big plastic bin that gets bigger over time.
stronglikedan··on List of references on Sony websites to players "owning" their digital games
> how much it costs to be a first owner vs. wait for a second-hand purchase

Nitpick, but in your example, they would cost exactly the same eventually (other than the effort it takes to sell it secondhand), so no reason to wait.

stronglikedan··on List of references on Sony websites to players "owning" their digital games
> the precedence will screw over Sony

As is usual in the modern world (and probably since the beginning of time since there's nothing new under the sun for the last ~2,000-3,000 years), not enough people will care for it to have any measurable screwing effect.

stronglikedan··on List of references on Sony websites to players "owning" their digital games
Don't cut off your nose to spite your face. Buy and enjoy their cameras while avoiding their software as much as humanly possible.

stronglikedan··on Planet Labs' open satellite feed
I don't think it's an accident. Flock != Flock Safety
stronglikedan··on iPhone Duo
A bigger screen is nice and all, but it doesn't solve the input problem. Touch inputs are just terrible compared to a keyboard with a pointing device that isn't a finger or stylus. I always thought I had a problem with the size of the screen until I tried a foldable, and that taught me that I simply hate touch inputs on any screen size.
