stormdennis··on Margarine
Love French cooking and the French aren't fat nor the Bretons either I'd imagine!
stormdennis··on Margarine
Yes, a kindred spirit! One thing though, I've heard that you should not cook with Olive Oil. It's burn temperature is too low and burning it turns the fats in it from good to bad ones. Olive oil great for dressings of course. Lard, butter or ghee better for frying with apparently.
stormdennis··on Margarine
Always loved butter and hated margarine. I often used to gross people out with how much butter I'd put on potatoes or bread to the point where I'd only use the amount I wanted to in private. It's great today to know that I was right to like it.

Not a popular opinion, it seems.
stormdennis··on New York Public Library ends all late fees
When I was a user of public libraries it used to be awkward to get to them, after work, before closing time. So I paid a lot of late fees. It used to bug me that late fees were waived for people on benefits then. There are just so many situations where something like this is the case. I often wonder how much the value of all these hidden benefits amount to. They're never considered when there's a discussion of benefit rates.

Good points. Then it should just tell the user that they appear to have no internet service.

The mobile whatsapp app should notify that the whatsapp servers are down and not allow you to just send messages that won't arrive for six hours

Maybe his school scheduled classes so it was impossible to do a language and a science subject at the same time. For example I dropped History and also Geography in school because they clashed with Science subjects.

I've no skin in the game but 30 mins a day of yoga and 2-3 hours a week of weights aren't hugely different.

I can relate, but not really for biscuits, more chocolate and sweets and beer, unfortunately.
stormdennis··on Regular exercisers drink more but are less likely to be problem drinkers – study
I've been giving up alcohol for years at a time. I've been overweight for years. Every time I go back on the alcohol I seem to be a heavier drinker than I was the previous time I gave it up. I've had a sweet tooth all my life. I can't eat a few sweets from a bag, I have to finish the whole bag. I've also been getting increasingly overweight for years. Recently I've taken to watching Dr. Sten Ekkberg's videos on youtube. I took up the diet recommended basically because it told me I could eat almost everything I really like, butter, beef, cheese, olive oil, oily fish. I had no specific plans to give up alcohol or sweets completely just to be as moderate as possible. Bizarrely right from day one I completely lost interest in alcohol (and it's been around a month now) and apart a couple of biscuits a day with a cup of tea, I've not eaten anything sweet. No bread, hardly any potatoes. I've lost 15 lbs so far and it's been an easier diet to persist with than I've ever tried before. My short summary of how I understand it works:

A low carbohydrate diet stabilises blood sugar whereas a high carb diet causes swings in blood sugar levels and actually prevents the body from burning fat. Insulin causes the blood sugar to drop then cortisol is released which stimulates the appetite for sugar, causing snacking. When on a high fat, calorie deficient diet, you're still hungry sometimes but not like the cravings you have when your blood sugar is all over the place from eating a high carb diet, Your body isn't prevented by insulin from going to the 'pantry' (your fat tissue) to keep you going.

Also aerobic exercise, ie walking NOT running burns fat. The latter will cause your glycogen stores to be raided as well as stimulating cortisol to tell you that you need carbs, URGENTLY!

Has anyone else here experienced, as I have, a sudden and complete loss of interest in alcohol and sweet confectionary after commencing a high fat low carbohydrate diet? I say this as someone who always been a bit too fond of both carbohydrates and alcohol.

I went on a high fat diet to lose weight but these two other goals of mine were achieved with zero effort

Nice to see one exists, it's on windows I'd be needing it though.
stormdennis··on Show HN: A simple recording program with the ability to record the screen
What I would love would be something that would work in a dashcam mode, constantly storing the preceding n minutes with the option to save parts to file. Useful for example for those times I am testing/debugging a gui app and I trigger a bug but cannot later reproduce.

stormdennis··on Reddit raises $410M in new funding
I hate reddit with a passion though I still visit it. Largely a consequence of despite having clicked a thousand times on the greyed-out 'continue in browser' button I still get the "see reddit in" dialog take up half my screen every damn day I visit.

stormdennis··on Autonomy founder Mike Lynch can be extradited to US
America shouldn't be allowed to extradite and prosecute people who have not committed crimes in America. They'd never allow it in reverse. Also the justice system there doesn't inspire confidence.

stormdennis··on New type of ancient human discovered in Israel
It's the Israelis who tend to say it's complex. The Palestinians don't
stormdennis··on New type of ancient human discovered in Israel
They made a plea (which you support), that simply because they are from there, that they therefore know the history better than someone from outside. That does not follow.
stormdennis··on New type of ancient human discovered in Israel
Not a "brit"
stormdennis··on New type of ancient human discovered in Israel
No of course not. Do you agree that the Palestinians who were expelled from what is now Israel should have a right to return?
stormdennis··on New type of ancient human discovered in Israel
>70% of the area that was proposed for the Jewish state was used to create what is today Jordan.

Do you have a reference for that?

stormdennis··on New type of ancient human discovered in Israel
I don't know how it is misleading. In 1947, the Jews were 33% of the population and owned just 6% of the land of Palestine, yet a UN of only 46 countries and dominated by the great powers granted them 55% of the land for a Jewish state which zionist offensives quickly expanded to 80% of the land while ethnically cleansing the population. The zionists were the direct cause of the exodus of the worlds' oldest Jewish communities in the other Arab lands both by their treatment of the Palestinians but also by sowing panic in Jews in Iraq and elsewhere by planting bombs in synagogues. Israel, a European colony largely, now needed Mizrahi Jews since the European Jews had been subjected to genocide. Of course some Jews in places like Yemen were zionists also and emigrated for that reason. Anything non-factual in that?
stormdennis··on New type of ancient human discovered in Israel
To be accurate, Israel also entirely consists of that kind of land.
stormdennis··on New type of ancient human discovered in Israel
I don't believe the US went in for a systematic renaming/demolition of places as Israel did. Balad Al-Sheikh has a history going back to the 16th century, Nesher to only 1924.

Also I'm not American.
