stonemetal··on Ask HN: Failed interview, feeling unemployable and depressed – what do I do?
>The first thing I thought is that my attitude is bad. But this can't be - I've heard from multiple people that I'm the nicest and most patient person they've ever met. In fact, my manager has criticized me more than once for being "too nice" i.e. that I should stand my ground more, or push people for things I depend on from them.

Who said being "nice" and having a good attitude where the same thing? Sounds like you do have a bad attitude not in the Hell's Angels way but in the "I don't actually give a shit any more so lets do whatever" sort of way. An engineer with a good attitude will actually give a shit about the quality and type work they do.

>Death doesn't seem so bad anymore.

Sounds like the start of a bout of burn out or depression, you should look into that.

For things to do:

Get a non-technical hobby that can take your mind of work Judo, Yoga, Meditation anything that takes a lot of focus to do right but won't kill you if you do it wrong aka no chainsaw juggling.

Exercise more try to hit an hour a day, it will help calm your mind and improve your mood. Swing by /r/bodyweightfitness learn how to do cool gymnastics stuff.

See a shrink. Even if you aren't crazy it can help to have a neutral third party to talk to especially one with skills.

stonemetal··on How to be mediocre and be happy with yourself
The ELI5 is everyone thinks they are closer to average than they are. Both people above and below average are effected. They still recognize which side of average they fall on though.
stonemetal··on U.S. Army fudged its accounts by trillions of dollars, auditor finds
I believe he is referring to this part of the article:

>The spokesman downplayed the significance of the improper changes, which he said net out to $62.4 billion.

>At first glance adjustments totaling trillions may seem impossible. The amounts dwarf the Defense Department’s entire budget. Making changes to one account also require making changes to multiple levels of sub-accounts, however. That created a domino effect where, essentially, falsifications kept falling down the line. In many instances this daisy-chain was repeated multiple times for the same accounting item.

Basically 62 billion was effected, they claim trillions because of "write amplification" across multiple accounts.

stonemetal··on Ask HN: What keeps you from exercising?
Depending on what you are interested in swing by http://reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness. Their recommended routine is based around gymnastics so the higher end workouts end up with you being able to do some interesting moves. Equipment to do it at home is pretty cheap. I use a 30 dollar doorway pull up bar and a 30 dollar set of gymnastic rings, but you can get away with less or have a pretty nice setup. As far as the kids go, I get up an hour before they do to workout at home.
stonemetal··on Confirmed: Walmart buys Jet.com for $3B in cash
Of course not, it will be a very large novelty check. /s

But why cash or at least 100% cash? Just seems weird to me that at least some of it wasn't in stock. Is it because Jet was still private, so any stock in the deal would have been immediately liquidated by the VCs?

stonemetal··on “Please note, the hashtag is for our paying advertisers”
Why wouldn't they be able to trademark "#Rio2016"? Just like with Apple computer, Apple Music, and the apple farm down the road, #Rio2016 should still be available for other uses. You just can't try to confuse people into thinking you sponsor the Olympics with it.
stonemetal··on Re: Why Uber Engineering Switched from Postgres to MySQL
He is claiming FreeBSD provides a better environment than Linux not that PostgreSQL behaves differently.
stonemetal··on Preliminary NTSB report on Tesla crash
No one suggested that it needs an intimate understanding of trucks. It needs to be able to tell the difference between empty space and not empty space. It needs to be able to do that for the entire volume the vehicle will occupy not just some of it. Otherwise it will run into trees, wires strung up to decapitate motorcyclist[1], farm animals and other obstacles that may or may not extend all the way to the ground directly in front of the sensor.

[1] Unfortunately that is a thing. http://lanesplitter.jalopnik.com/police-hunting-sadistic-bas...

stonemetal··on We have an epidemic of bad posture
I like the reddit /r/bodyweightfitness recommended routine.
stonemetal··on Alcohol is a direct cause of seven forms of cancer, finds study
Honestly I had never heard of a link between alcohol and cancer before.
stonemetal··on Ask HN: Is it difficult for non-Chinese to work in China?
Japan is pretty Xenophobic. The whole article is interesting but if you search for "On Being A Foreigner In Japan" it gets right to the point.

stonemetal··on Five million Danish ID numbers sent to Chinese firm by mistake
Not Danish so I don't know their laws, but in the US not encrypting the disk would be a violation of HIPAA. In-house courier would work but isn't necessary. FedEx at least, I am sure the others do too, provide services for transporting secure information. Though you have to make use of them, you don't just drop it off with the regular shipping as seems to have been done here.
stonemetal··on John Carmack on Inlined Code (2014)
Is get_config_filename() a large function that gets the filename directly or is the end result nested another hundred lines of callstack down? If it is a large function that directly returns results then that is my pick, high level "story" with shallow, direct access to the details. No dicking about for half an hour trying to figure out where A, B, or C happen, yet hidden details for when you are focusing on a different part of the code.
stonemetal··on What ever happened to Wordstar?
Being in a hospital isn't duress. Threatening to put someone in the hospital is duress. He might have had a lack of capacity argument, that is he was so out of his mind that he was unable to sign a contract, but I am not sure if that applies either.
stonemetal··on Shedding light on the dark web
First off if it were legal how would there be an increase in illegal activity? There probably would be an increase in drug use if that is what you mean.

The government could still fight it, but it would be a health and human services problem at that point. Which means a lot less high stakes do anything to not get caught crime going on. It could be paid for by taxes on the drugs. There would be fewer deaths from drug overdoses because quality and purity could be regulated. Drugs with little to no long term side effects would probably become popular. Drugs that have harsher side effects and highly addictive properties would probably still be stigmatized because of their effects.

The line would get drawn the same place it does for gambling and alcohol. Occasional use by grownups is OK, if it becomes life impacting then rehab and abstinence is probably best for you.

stonemetal··on Tesla Model S Autopilot Reliability – Why Americans Should Love Tesla
It is a little more than that. It is enhanced cruise control, lane departure warning system, and auto parking system all rolled into one. The new part of the system is that instead of just warning the driver about lane departure it will automatically steer back into the lane, and if the driver puts on the turn signal it will automatically change lanes.

Honestly it seems like the big deal is that it is Tesla and how they marketed the feature.

stonemetal··on United States Health Care Reform: Progress to Date and Next Steps
The government reduces Medicare payouts by a fixed percentage, starting at 1% in 2014 going up until it reaches 9% in 2022, to any participant who doesn't meet meaningful use requirements. The only way to opt out of the requirement is to completely opt out of medicare. That rather sounds like a nonvoluntary penalty carrying program to me.
stonemetal··on The Tunguska Event
If someone says they are specifically reading about history, then that suggests they are reading history books.
stonemetal··on The Tunguska Event
>I read more history

None of those are in a history book.

stonemetal··on How 'Advantage Players' Game the Casinos
Take 12 cards, 2 sets of 1 through 6. Shuffle and deal one from each set to the player. This is identical to rolling the dice.
stonemetal··on Stop Bashing G.M.O. Foods, More Than 100 Nobel Laureates Say
Any chemical that is naturally occurring is considered organic. To be specific here: https://www.ams.usda.gov/rules-regulations/organic/national-... is the USDA's list of chemicals that can be used and still be labeled organic.
stonemetal··on Ask HN: What is your best advice for a developer to write better code?
By style I mean it closer to writing style. How you express your thoughts. For example checking preconditions and returning an error in a block up front instead of mixed in with the computation, or nesting your computation in a bunch of precondition if checks.

Bracket placement is trivial and can be formatted with a tool in a second or two so play around with that all you like.

stonemetal··on Ask HN: What is your best advice for a developer to write better code?
Intentionally build a style. Keep it stable for a period of time. Finally critique and improve it.

You often hear "The worst code I have ever seen is code I wrote six months ago" While on the one hand that may be true, on the other hand it is trite bullshit. If the depth of your introspection and reflection on past code is "Wow what a pile of shit!". Guess what you are going to be saying about your code in six months?

With a real honest critique you will see flaws and things that you did well. Don't just dwell on what doesn't work. When you see things in your code that work well try to figure out why they work well so that it can guide your deliberate changes to what doesn't work. Also if you don't keep your style constant for a period of time you won't have enough experience with it, nor a large enough body of code to review to have a full view of what works and what doesn't.

Last but most important read the code of others to pick up ideas on how to improve your style of coding. Some of the best bits of my coding style I have picked up from others.

stonemetal··on Bloody Plant Burger Smells, Tastes and Sizzles Like Meat
In japan seafood isn't considered meat. If you do then it can be pretty hard.

Also, as far as I understand, they don't use a lot of vegetable oil. So things that would be ok in the west, like bread, more than likely have lard in them.

stonemetal··on Home Depot Files Antitrust Lawsuit Against Visa, MasterCard
It is an insane marketing speak thing. The contractual requirement isn't for no price differences. There may be a discount for using cash, but they can't word it as being charged more for using a card. The two might be equivalent in numerical terms, but it is the language that is important.
stonemetal··on The 100:10:1 method – the heart of my game design process
It seems like it should be possible for most board games. All you really need are: a graph to represent the board locations and connections between them, user tokens on the board, user inventory off the board, and a rules engine to evaluate the rules of the game. That seems like it ought to be enough to get everything from risk to candy land.
stonemetal··on Police use new device to seize money in bank accounts or on prepaid cards
Yes, that would be the fourth amendment.
stonemetal··on There’s Nothing Magical About Breakfast
Some do, others carry a large pump and hook up to a fire hydrant for the actual water supply.
stonemetal··on Alienation Is Killing Americans and Japanese
While they may be Japanese brands they aren't Japanese companies, they are multi-nationals. Much like the US they have outsourced all of their manufacturing. A strong Honda that manufactures their motorcycles in Thailand and their cars in North America doesn't translate into robust Japanese employment. Fewer local jobs means less money going into the local economy.
stonemetal··on There’s Nothing Magical About Breakfast
So then when McDonald's introduced breakfast anytime and had ads about having breakfast for lunch and breakfast for dinner they were suggesting fasting all day until you got an egg mcmuffin for lunch or your end of day meal?

I don't disagree with the it started as first meal of the day regardless of time of day, but these days it is more likely to mean morning meal than it is first meal of the day.
