stonemetal··on Intel CEO’s Stock Sales May Warrant SEC Examination
That is a bit of a red herring. He setup the automated trading schedule in 2015. In October 2017 he changed the rules of his automated trading schedule to dump his stock almost as if he was trading on insider information.

stonemetal··on A basic income experiment in Kenya
Depending on income students can get free or reduced price lunches. No there is no universal free lunch program in the US. Not sure how they do it now but it used to work just like food stamps, kids in the program had membership cards that got punched when they got lunch while everyone else paid money.
stonemetal··on 640k Really Is Enough for Anyone
Disk I/O being synchronous doesn't disqualify it from being real time. Disk I/O not having a bounded execution time would make it not real time.
stonemetal··on Ask HN: Can one just assemble pieces of electronics and sell them as a kit?
I believe so, the Arduino is already FCC approved. It doesn't need a separate approval for each retailer. Same for the LEDs etc. If you are making changes to the hardware the FCC has documentation on what is permissible for not needing a re-certification.
stonemetal··on Clean – A functional programming language
No, I don't. I actually wonder why it gets mentioned. It is some professor's research project not an actual programming ecosystem. The documentation on the site is more than a decade old, it covers version 2.2 released in 2006. Want documentation on what has been happening since then? Pick up a research paper. By comparison Haskell has a dozen books on Amazon and plenty of newbie level documentation since multiple universities use it as a teaching language.
stonemetal··on Clean – A functional programming language
Their documentation states: "The latest version 2.0 of the IDE is currently only available on the Wintel and MacOS/PowerPC platform. On the other platforms a much more restricted and older version of the IDE is available. "

So it sounds about right to me.

stonemetal··on Larry Ellison allegedly tried to have a professor fired for benchmarking Oracle
They don't want MS to pay an "independent" 3rd party to poorly configure their database then publish benchmarks that show them in a negative light. Therefor if you want to publish benchmarks you have to (pay to) keep Oracle in the loop so that they make sure you don't screw it up.

You see this all the time with Mysql and Postgresql benchmarks. Typically when I see the two compared it is by someone with a decade of experience with one of the systems, and none with the other one. They use a workload that is optimized for their usual system. They also don't have a clue how to create a high performance version for the competitor, nor do they know how to configure it.

stonemetal··on What to Worry About in This Surreal Bull Market
Is the value of stock supposed to equal the GDP?

It is my understanding that the value of a stock should be equal to present value of future cash flows. If those future cash flows are growing faster than the discount rate then a value higher than 100% of GDP is to be expected.

stonemetal··on Can anyone make money on the moon?
We are carbon based life forms, our being alive is just a fancy way of taking carbon in a solid form (food) and turning it in to CO2 for plants. So you either ship food and O2 to the moon and CO2 back to Earth, or you build up a supply and start the cycle there.

Presumably if you are running some sort of hotel, you ship enough O2 and food to cover your guests travel and stay. Then only ship back what they need to stay alive on the ride home. Eventually you build up a large enough supply that you don't have to ship as much, reducing costs.

stonemetal··on Someone please explain this?
What is there to explain? Ordering is "heat" based, not strictly number of up votes. The high point total things in red are 20 hours old vs the 28 pointer which is only a couple of hours old. Therefore they have about the same amount of heat.

The thing in blue is politics, which according to the rules is off topic. I can't think of an explanation for why someone posted it.

stonemetal··on 28-year-old makes millions buying from Walmart, selling on Amazon
Hire them into your business. Teach them the ropes. Then turn them loose with some seed money.
stonemetal··on Lessons of an MIT Education
In general the answer he gives sounds like bullshit to me. Really, "unconsciously absorbed" "ambiance" is what going to MIT is about?

>a gifted student will thrive in the company of other gifted students

This I put a little more stock in. It is competitive to get in. So all of the people in your calculus one class had calculus in high school, and they are all particularly gifted at math. This means they are able to cover more, and go deeper in to the subject because there is no time "wasted" educating an "average" student.

stonemetal··on Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos sold more than $1B worth of stock this week
They only became profitable recently, like 2016 time frame.
stonemetal··on Clojurecademy is now open source
Their query language is based on Datalog (a non Turing complete subset of prolog.)

I can't think of a job where I would pick it over a SQL database. Maybe if you were already using Clojure, since there would be less impedance mismatch.

stonemetal··on Jewelbots – A Friendship Bracelet You Can Code
> mostly aimed at boys.

>They're just marketed to boys.

To me that is the definition of aimed at. Designed for stereotypical boy activities, marketed to boys. What does it mean to you?

stonemetal··on Catalan referendum: 'Hundreds injured' in Catalan clashes
No, as he says Spain can vote to split amicably or they can go to war. The US isn't apart of the UK because they won the war. Virginia is a part of the US because the south lost the war. For an amicable split you would see something like India and the UK.
stonemetal··on Ask HN: What's the worst Oracle can do to OpenJDK?
Probably the worst I can think of is taking the Google Android playbook open with closed extensions then deprecate the open. You already see this a little bit with things like JavaFx in the Oracle distribution but not the OpenJDK. Sure you can build it yourself, but how long till we see extensions that are in the Oracle distribution that can't be built for the OpenJDK? Eventually it looks like Android where what is open and what people actually use are two different things.
stonemetal··on Why I haven't jumped ship from Common Lisp to Racket just yet
It isn't in DrRacket by default but it is a common enough requested feature that they keep an example of how to add it in the documentation.

stonemetal··on Why We Can’t Have the Male Contraceptive Pill
It is a strong contraceptive made to be taken the morning after. Useful if a condom broke or wasn't used.
stonemetal··on Ask HN: Why isn't Prolog more popular?
You only need a portable app version if it isn't a portable app by default.

If I go grab the python zip for my platform it is already a "portable app" what is there for portable apps to do? The only dev environments I can think of that aren't portable by default are not free, so portable apps wouldn't be able to release them anyway.

stonemetal··on Star Citizen Raised $148M from Fans, and Now It’s Raising Concerns
Yeah I am surprised they haven't added a rule that you can't give backers something that doesn't exist.

Being able to back something to get that thing seems to confuse to many people into believing it is a shop where you buy things rather than an investing in something you would like to exist, but may never actually exist.

stonemetal··on China Doesn't Understand the Concept of American Chinese Food (2014)
It isn't nearly that hard to find authentic Chinese food. It probably isn't on the menu because it doesn't sell, but most non chain Chinese restaurants are pretty capable of putting together a nice authentic meal.
stonemetal··on How many jobs really require college?
Well they are full medical doctors, so see, and treat patients, carry malpractice insurance so you have some one to sue when they miss your cancer.

If it were just about reading the films, the tech who does the procedure would read the films. To be effective at a tech job you must know what you are looking at so that you can tell if you have successfully captured images for the doctor's report. If something looks off they may need to take further measurements and images.

stonemetal··on How many jobs really require college?
>I've yet to see successfully automated in a single package

Why would it need to be a single package? Is there a point to making the roomba do laundry?

stonemetal··on We’re dropping Google Ads
If they are going to spend a million man hours of effort playing wack a mole with content creators, why haven't they spent a tenth of that effort keeping the ads they get paid to run safe and clean? Easy. Poor search results reflects poorly on them, when they put a dodgy ad on a site they get paid, and the site gets blamed.
stonemetal··on The reference D compiler is now open source
The main problem with the public domain is that there is no such thing as "the public domain". Each country has its own copyright law, with its own terms and conditions. What the public domain means in the US is not what the public domain means elsewhere i.e. Germany. In Germany an author has Moral Rights which the author is incapable of giving up and may only transfer as apart of their will. So rather than require all German contributors to be dead and have a will that grants their moral rights to the project, using a permissive license gets the same effect.
stonemetal··on Nvidia Announces Titan Xp Graphics Card
He is saying a video game running at 60 Hz has approx 16 ms per frame. 550 GB/s * 16 ms ~ 9 GB. So if you are running full bandwidth for an entire frame you can access 9 GB of RAM.
stonemetal··on Why is this Go faster than the equivalent Java?
After a while you get pigeonholed. You can hop jobs easily but it is the same shit, different name on the building. It is often easier to pivot inside a company then jump to a new company.
stonemetal··on Why is this little construction crane illegal in New York City? (2016)
There are Medical health records in Postgres, doctor's office software running on windows and linux, Barcode readers at the local pharmacy, safety critical code in a git repo. If you are going to draw a line around safety critical software the dependency graph is much larger than you might think.
stonemetal··on Reasons YouTubers keep imploding, from a YouTuber
