stingraycharles··on Once Claude can measure something, it can make it faster
“What I find strange is how resigned the AI labs seem about this behavior, like everyone's accepted this is just something models do.”

Because these models are made for all kind of purposes, and I’m starting to believe that offense / cyber warfare is a much higher priority than these labs are acknowledging.

The same model that is heavily trained to find nefarious ways to break into systems is also optimizing your code, which leads to mixed behavior.

stingraycharles··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Fusion has been 10 years away for the past 3 decades.

(I think fusion is great, by the way, but I just don’t believe any timelines at this point anymore)

stingraycharles··on Claude Code reads AGENTS.md only when telemetry is on [fixed]
Yes, but at the same time, it’s also a good, simple use case to test a new plugin system. I can totally understand that.
stingraycharles··on The new CC, an AI agent built for families
I think it’s a reference to “CC’ing” someone by email (they also use that in the examples).
stingraycharles··on AMD's random number generator can't generate a 0?
Isn’t this effectively what systems like /dev/(u)rand do? Pool multiple random sources together to hedge against these things?

I fail to see why one should either rely on a single random source nor roll their own.

stingraycharles··on Can gzip be a language model?
Back in the day - maybe two decades ago - I implemented language detection like this.

I seeded gzip compressors’ dictionaries with Wikipedia articles in different languages.

I would then try to use said dictionaries on any random text, and the one that was best able to compress it, was the correct language.

Absolutely totally not the best approach, but very fast and super simple to implement.

stingraycharles··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
Maybe people are feeling confident to put their masks off with the stuff that’s happening in the US?
stingraycharles··on I am often wrong
This comment is needlessly hostile and adds no value to the conversation.
stingraycharles··on I am often wrong
I’m surprised that you haven’t noticed this yourself, this is an incredibly common issue.

I always thought that it was perhaps referencing something that’s in its hidden thinking tokens, but the grandparent’s explanation could also very well be it.

stingraycharles··on ChatGPT now knows what you do on other websites via ad collector
This is a very common practice called retargeting / behavioral targeting and has existed for about 2 decades at this point. Facebook is hardly the only company that does this.

Modern browsers are more strict towards third party cookies, but there are plenty of ways to work around this.

stingraycharles··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
It baffles me how shortsighted the policymaking here is. Like, what did they expect to happen?
stingraycharles··on How OpenAI Used Its Own LLMs to Design Its Jalapeño Chip
This was exactly what I meant yes.
stingraycharles··on How OpenAI Used Its Own LLMs to Design Its Jalapeño Chip
That has a very different meaning than literal stealing.
stingraycharles··on How OpenAI Used Its Own LLMs to Design Its Jalapeño Chip
Didn’t they not just switch employers but actually handed over a lot of proprietary documents from Apple?
stingraycharles··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
Why is it more relevant today?
stingraycharles··on One year of sponsored Servo development
As someone who had their first internet connection through NLnet in the 90s (later UUnet I think?), I’m so pleasantly surprised the impact that the organization has for open source projects globally.
stingraycharles··on ImpactGate: A merge gate that scores the structural decay AI adds
That project in itself looks very interesting. How are people using it, any examples of how people get this into an actual report / CI test / benchmark / whatever ?
stingraycharles··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
> Tighter integration than UK

Sounds like it could be a solution for the UK as well, which begs the question: why wasn’t a similar proposal worked out with the uk?

stingraycharles··on High-performance garbage collection for C++
Title misses a (2020)
stingraycharles··on High-performance garbage collection for C++
Yeah but that doesn’t work when you’re using C++ to implement another language where people can do anything they want, including circular references.
stingraycharles··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Perhaps the external enemy being able to do these things is, in fact, their own failure in a way.
stingraycharles··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
I’ve just asked a friend of mine who lives in PNG and yeah, this definitely happened. Nowadays it doesn’t happen anymore except potentially in some insanely remote areas.

Supposedly the Japanese during WW2 also resorted to cannibalism.

stingraycharles··on When code is a maze, smart developers make maps (2025)
Rewrites require a lot of effort, significantly more than just adding comments. It’s a pragmatic tool until you actually have the time to do the rewrite.
stingraycharles··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
This was already known when Apple Intelligence was first announced years ago so nothing surprising there.
stingraycharles··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Seems like this is a draft / filler that was supposed to be updated. At least it’s not AI.
stingraycharles··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Yeah as long as the audience is there, people will keep posting on Twitter.
stingraycharles··on David Sacks: OpenAI and Anthropic Don't Need Regulations to Pace Frontier Models
But that doesn’t matter a lot when some nation state is using their own AI to hack US assets, right? How, exactly, would a lockdown or slowdown prevent that?

If history has shown one thing it’s that China often capitalizes very well on these types of measures.

stingraycharles··on Ask HN: Career paths to consider if I am better at supporting than creating?
Eh, SREs are generally considered harder to get into with more responsibility than regular development roles, unless I misunderstood what you meant with “reliability”.
stingraycharles··on JetKVM Mini
That article seems to arrive to the same conclusion as I did (“we need IP KVM”) without offering any solid choices?

Which solutions perform well?

stingraycharles··on JetKVM Mini
What’s a decent quality IP KVM solution that’s not too expensive? We’re looking to put a dozen of mac minis in a collocation, and currently investigating solutions for remote access.
