steviedotboston··on How have prices changed in a year? NPR checked 114 items at Walmart
the price of name brand soda is outrageous. I remember when it was around a dollar a bottle not long ago, now it's basically 3 dollars a bottle. I can't think of a good explanation for this. It's water and subsidized corn syrup.
steviedotboston··on Don't fall into the anti-AI hype
For me one of the real benefits has been no longer feeling "stuck" on tricky problems and losing momentum. I can work with an LLM to generate a solution to something that would previously cause me confusion, which would lead to distraction, which would cause loss of productivity, etc.
steviedotboston··on Clicks Communicator
I've been very impressed by the attention to detail Clicks puts into their products. It might be a niche but it seems like one that deserves to exist.

steviedotboston··on Amish men live longer
the amish diet is pretty unhealthy. lots of carbs, fats, pies, bacon, etc. if you had an amish diet with an "english" lifestyle you would definitely have health issues.

I loved the original hackpad. I used it for personal task management at a time when I was really struggling to keep on task at a job.
steviedotboston··on US Visa Applications Must Be Submitted from Country of Residence or Nationality
People make two big assumptions about immigration in my experience

1) They think the system should be extremely simple 2) They assume everyone involved is being honest

When the reality is

1) Many people involved are lying to claim immigration benefits they have no right to 2) The system needs to have a level of complexity and difficulty to prevent these people from accessing these benefits

steviedotboston··on Ask HN: Looking for headless CMS recommendation
Drupal works very well as a headless CMS now

https://www.drupal.org/docs/develop/decoupled-drupal https://www.lullabot.com/resource/decoupled-drupal

Drupal has a really strong community behind it, and was completely rebuilt a number of years ago with modern PHP. It uses Symfony, composer, etc.

steviedotboston··on How did .agakhan, .ismaili and .imamat get their own TLDs?
The Ismaili leaders are super influential and have connections everywhere. They are megawealthy socialites. Basically they wanted the TLDs so they knew who to talk to to make it happen.

steviedotboston··on Thoughts on Asunción, Paraguay
So rich that paraguay imports all of its oil and gas.
steviedotboston··on Thoughts on Asunción, Paraguay
Paraguay has a long history of stupid wars. They started the Chaco War with Bolivia over control of the Chaco region, which they thought was full of oil. Turns out it wasn't and it it's mostly uninhabited forests with some Mennonites now.
steviedotboston··on Klein Bottle Amazon Brand Hijacking (2021)
Check out the recalls from https://www.cpsc.gov/

Amazon lists thousands of junk products from China that violate US laws around product safety. Toys containing lead paint, crib bumpers that can suffocate babies, etc. The process seems to be that Amazon just needs to remove the product in violation but it really appears that this is a wholesale attempt on Amazon's part to circumvent legislation. It should not be this trivial for consumers to find products that are potentially dangerous.

steviedotboston··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
The entire article is about anti-Israel student protests and how the Trump administration is punishing universities for not squelching them.
steviedotboston··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
Here's one example: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/judge-rules-jewish-stud...

"the protesters created a “Jew Exclusion Zone” where in order to pass “a person had to make a statement pledging their allegiance to the activists’ view.” Those who complied with the protesters’ view were issued wristbands to allow them to pass through, the complaint says, which effectively barred Jewish students who supported Israel and denied them access to the heart of campus."

steviedotboston··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
The real cowardice was when student mobs took over campuses and harassed jewish students but the universities did nothing about. They hoped it would fizzle out and go away, and even though the worst of it did, it didn't go away entirely and the underlying tensions still simmered. Jewish students who were terrified to walk to class, lest they be harassed by some masked terrorist supporters, wanted to make sure the worst offenders of the protests were dealt with. Most universities still did nothing, and then Trump was elected. He has been consistently pro-Israel, and the organized Jewish community has been able to make inroads with his administration. So now he's dealing with it in the way that he deals with every issue.

What we are seeing now is entirely the fault of university administrators who failed to deal with the issue when it started.

steviedotboston··on I'm the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks
You apply for a visa in your country of residence. If you are in the US already you need to have a valid visa.
steviedotboston··on I'm the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks
Her visa was revoked, and then she entered the US again. That's an immigration offense that can get you detained at the border (any international airport).

steviedotboston··on Israel, Hamas reach ceasefire deal to end 15 months of war in Gaza
Hamas has been considerably weakened. Their arsenal of rockets and weapons is depleted. At the beginning of the war thousands of rockets were being shot into Israel and now there are very few and the ones that are are quite crude. Hezbollah entered the war immediately and said the only way they would exit is if Hamas exists. Israel retaliated, killed their leader, decimated their forces, and negotiated a ceasefire that got Hezbollah to back off on their original terms. Lebanon just elected an anti-Hezbollah President.

During all of this, Assad was deposed. Israel's main adversary is Iran. They are the ones who fund and supply Hamas and Hezbollah, and were the key ally of Assad. They attacked Israel multiple times during the war and Israel responded in kind, the assesments seem to be that Israel's responses were quite strong.

So prior to October 7, Iran had strong proxies and allies all over the region. They are now either in shambles or deposed.

The goal of the war for Israel is to prevent another October 7th style attack from occuring. I'd say they have made significant steps towards accomplishing that from a military perspective.
