Axios also puts this to great use with a "go deeper" button. It's very helpful for deciding how much of each story to consume.

stevenwliao··on Ask HN: Micro-feedback at work and cultural differences
US dev: I prefer when areas of improvement are discussed privately- it's helped me grow at estimation, setting expectations, and honing my quality/shipit slider.

I'm sympathetic to collecting more metrics for measuring performance because it can reduce bias. Perhaps a good compromise would be making the karma count only visible by the individual employee and the manager.

"Broke the company website" is a process problem, not a people problem.
stevenwliao··on Internal Tensions at Facebook Are Boiling Over
Aside from the trolling, there's real conversation happening about culture and compensation that doesn't happen anywhere else online. Be the change that you want to see.
stevenwliao··on Why small tweaks and split testing don't work, and what to do instead
Split testing can be used by companies who care about their users and companies who don't. It just tells you how your users react. It's not a substitute for user empathy or regulations.
stevenwliao··on Why small tweaks and split testing don't work, and what to do instead
It may or may not be true that they never came back. A good split test tool will tell you that as well.
stevenwliao··on Ask HN: Why not more hiring of junior devs, then on-the-job-training?
If they are looking for 'get list 4th largest', they will need more than Google search...

If your phone is mission-critical for diabetes control, you should make sure to have some backup, since there are other ways your phone can fail.

Once these backup mechanisms are in place, as a handy side effect, you're also covered for the CBP case.

stevenwliao··on St Louis Uber driver has been streaming his passengers online. Most have no idea
Uber/Lyft vs Taxi

- call by tapping a few times (vs finding dispatch phone number in every city)

- reliable ETA always on screen (vs calling dispatch for unreliable estimate)

- cheaper and always shows the price before I get in (vs more expensive and no estimate)

- never taken on scenic route and usually dropped off directly at destination (vs often driver optimizes by taking scenic route or dropping off short of destination)

stevenwliao··on What People Think You Can’t Say in Silicon Valley
The contention is that the “correct” views can be openly discussed.
stevenwliao··on Firefox is on a slippery slope
Safari appears to have a good track record. You’re paying a bit more for the whole machine but I don’t see a problem with the bundling.

It's interesting that the executive received more jail time than the engineer (7 years vs 40 months).
stevenwliao··on AT&T wants you to forget that it blocked FaceTime over cellular in 2012
If you want to use the mobile Internet, you're going to hand money to a NN violator. Aside from abstaining, the only rational option is to pick the least worst. Blocking a service is much worse than throttling classes of high-bandwidth connections.

> The Starcraft analogy is simple to make: The winning player is the one that spends all their resources, not the one that hoards them.

Resource scarcity is much harder to predict in the real world than in Starcraft. If the economy is bad, you may not be able to raise another round when you need it- all the mineral patches disappear from the map.

stevenwliao··on FastMail lifetime member plans to be discontinued
Looks like OP's accounting is based on the sunk cost from years ago rather than the cost of replacing the service, which suggests that they value the service at less than $15.
stevenwliao··on How we unnecessarily burned 20k with Facebook Ads
Are the assumptions here that:

1) Facebook News Feed users don't care about their privacy

2) The OP was more motivated by viral HN marketing than actual direct results on Facebook?

These are interesting claims. Can you substantiate them?

stevenwliao··on Facebook's “free internet” programme hits a roadblock in India
As stated, the Google Fiber restrictions seem more like a QoS and bandwidth concern rather than a content concern.
stevenwliao··on Ask HN: Do the monthly 'Ask HN: Who wants to be hired?' posts get anyone hired?
I misread the post. Good catch.
stevenwliao··on Ask HN: Do the monthly 'Ask HN: Who wants to be hired?' posts get anyone hired?
It helped me find two places that I'm interviewing with. Will update once the results are in.
