steventruong··on Ask HN: Should I sell my Google IO ticket?
Take my answer with a grain of salt as its clearly just my own experience and what I do.

That said, outside of friends I already know and go with, I really don't network or mingle with people at the conference much with exception to lunch time where you're sitting at the table talking to other attendees or staff. I pretty spend the majority of my time there in sessions and of course the keynotes.

So, as you said, the talks eventually get uploaded online so why go? In part because of the experience I guess, and in part, I go with friends so its a good way to meetup and hang out at the conference together. Swag is just icing.

steventruong··on Udacity vs Stanford's vs MIT's OCW vs Khan Academy vs Code Academy
Also, it's Codecademy, not Code Academy. :)

They both exist and have both been in the news. Codecademy gets talked about more because its free and YC funded but Code Academy is also recommended by 37Signals, etc... See:

steventruong··on Pebble becomes most funded kickstarter project ever
Give the fast rate of growth, I am sure many others predicted this will happen. The only question in my mind is how high they'll reach before funding ends. Lets see if they can hit past $15M.
steventruong··on Ask HN: Am I hireable?
I know someone exactly in the same boat as you (i.e. not legal status and needs to get married if they want to stay and be hired legally). He does things through 1099s as well. There are seriously legal repercussions and as a result, he can't be legally employed. Been programming for a really long time and even has his CS degree. Unfortunately the best he can do is contract work.
steventruong··on Show HN: Very creative portfolio
Pretty cool. I like it.
steventruong··on Show HN: need a name for your new startup? We just launched a naming company
Most people have difficulties coming up with a name simply because of personal issues with names, not because a particular name isn't brandable. In other words, its because THEY are particular about the name, not because the name doesn't have merit.

With that said, on your methodology, some parts are contradicting. In one part, you argue a name should hint what it does, but on another, a name needs to be flexible to the long term strategy. The great companies often follow the latter, not the former. Personally I too prefer names that don't associate with a definitive meaning or product.

steventruong··on Wealthier people are less honest than lower classes
Driving a more expensive vehicle is not an indication of being wealthier. In the Millionaire Next Door, there were arguments showing that there are many wealthy people who live modest lifestyles and those who own expensive, luxurious items, were often living paycheck to paycheck. I think jumping the conclusion here base on cost of the vehicle or vehicle type is wrong.

I know plenty of wealthy people who drive Priuses (far from the luxury vehicle you expect) as well as a slew of other older, common used vehicles on the road. Plus one study is not a good indication to argue such.

steventruong··on My bf got me to code
Years ago, probably around 2006 or 2007, my gf learned how to design and slice in HTML and CSS too. Its a good starting point although the real challenge will be actually picking up a real programming language thereafter. Best of luck.
steventruong··on OMGPOP CEO tweets: "Shay Pierce was the weakest employee on the team"
Understanding his frustration doesn't excuse his actions.
steventruong··on Ask HN: Do remote co-founders ever work out?
Having been on both sides, hands down working side by side is way better. Working long distance (in different states in my case) works okay up to a certain point. Not the best scenario and certainly doesn't last forever. Obviously take this with a grain of salt as this is my experience.
steventruong··on Ask HN: Would adding this to my website scare clients away?
Its hard to say. Some might take it as not professional. Others may not care. Some will think its cool. In my personal opinion, I wouldn't post it at all. But that's me. I mean realistically, is there a business reason to? You should ask yourself that and quantify it as such.
steventruong··on Show HN: This is why I built my startup
Been an entrepreneur since I was a kid, long before I even knew the word existed or what the meaning meant. It wasn't a matter of motivation. Its naturally who I am. Never stopped doing business related stuff and probably never will. Don't need motivation for that.
steventruong··on Ask HN: Would adding this to my website scare clients away?
I think rather than put something like that up and have all sorts of assumptions come to mind, it is better to address these after you've had a chance to open up a dialog among yourself and the potential client. This way you guys can have a proper discussion with all the proper expectations on both sides rather than have all sorts of misunderstanding or misconceptions.

In your example, dating a rock star who's away for months at a time is something you certainly want to know, but having that on her dating profile without giving yourself the opportunity to get to know her by making your own assumptions or to see if this might even work in some other capacity is leaving stuff off the table that in end might have been doable. Just saying.

steventruong··on How large is github. Is there a legit way to download it all?
I don't have an answer to your question off the top of my head but I am curious as to why you would want to download all of the open source code on there?
steventruong··on Apple's domains
I'm curious on how many TLD extensions Apple owns for "apple" i.e. apple.com, apple.net, etc
steventruong··on Conflicted, Should I sell my domain?
I'm not partial to that name but my recommendation is to sell it and come up with another name later. Branding is what you make of it.
steventruong··on Ask HN: A High Profile Startup Guy Ripped us Off. What's the best move?
Drop the anger. Focus on what you're doing. Forget about them. They are dead to you. It's not worth it wasting brain cells even thinking about this. It only wastes your time, your energy, and pollute you. Focus on what actually matters
steventruong··on One in ten people never delete emails, are you an email hoarder?
I thought the same but in my experience, I've rarely, if ever, had the need to search for email. When I did (super rare), I found that the search function in gmail was mostly busted. Sometimes it would omit results for email that is clearly there that match specific queries or filters. I'd have to try several different methods and even manually going back at times to get the email in question. In the end, having it overloaded with email was more of a pain for those instances where I needed to find a specific email.

Sometime towards the end of last year, I decided to wipe my entire email record (which was a lot) and start from a clean slate. Since then, I made an effort to delete any unimportant emails instantly, file the important ones I think I may need to keep, and tag temp emails that needs to be there but would be deleted once they serve their purpose (for example, online orders for items shipped).

For several months now, I've managed to keep my entire email account under 50 emails. It makes managing it much easier and great for emails I would need. This of course is base on my habits. I never really have a need to pull up the majority of old emails and leaving it there is just unnecessary clutter (personal opinion).

steventruong··on Ask HN: Will Y Combinator accept you if you don't come from MIT/Stanford/etc...
Not true at all. I know the founders of MixRank and HelloFax had no such background (among others).
steventruong··on Ask HN: How desired is working at Apple?
This is speculation but I assume that some of the following factors play a huge role in folks choosing which company to work for:

Pay, stocks, flexibility, benefits, etc...

I'd imagine Apple is probably the least appealing in many categories when compared to Google or Facebook even if they are one of the most awesome/innovative companies out there.

Then there are other factors to consider for some people such as network (folks they'll be connected to), environment, learning experience, etc...

I assume these also appear to be better at other companies.

Of course whether or not any of the above is better or comparable is a different story but it would seem if those are the things important to folks, Apple would be slightly lower on the list.

steventruong··on Ask HN: What came first: the hacker or the program?
Think and act
steventruong··on Ask HN: Friend is genius, needs cash (VC), doesn't think he can get it
Couple of bullet points. Most experience entrepreneurs will say this too.

1. Accomplishments in academics or otherwise hold very low bearings in success as an entrepreneur. After all, most people don't have any problems building their prototype. It's getting people to actually use their prototype. He may be a genius at what he can do and by no means am I discounting that in any way, but definitely keep in mind that that alone does not account for success or failure. Its a mixture of other things. It certainly is helpful however.

2. 4 year plans should be thrown out the window. No entrepreneur should have a plan more than 6 months out. Maybe 12 at most. And potentially a grand vision down the road. A 4 year plan is bound to fail, change, and all sorts of other things. You don't know what is going to happen with the rest of the world, changes in tech, etc etc etc... 4 years is a lifetime and planning that far ahead and bound to guarantee none of the plans will come out as you envision them. Make shorter immediate plans and adjust as things progress.

3. Now for your actual question. If he truly is interested, have him network in the Valley (assuming he's located here) and get some introductions. If people will think he's brilliant as you say, they shouldn't have any issues making the introduction. If they do, there is a clear signal. Alternatively, have him post what he's doing on AngelList. Certainly if what he is doing is that important, it will garner some attention.

steventruong··on Ask HN: Friend is genius, needs cash (VC), doesn't think he can get it
Base on the responses others have given and your reaction to them, I'd say there is a bit of defensiveness in there. I don't know your friend personally so take what I say with a grain of salt but smarts (aka the genius) does not make a brilliant entrepreneur. Someone else said he's more of a employee #1 than a founder and I tend to agree base on how you've describe him even if he is the kind of person who refuses to be employee #1 of which there is nothing wrong with that. You can learn A LOT being an early stage employee rather than always having the narrow mindset of having make the leap immediately and doing it yourself.

In regards to why I think he isn't suited as an entrepreneur (at this time; important to note this distinction for now) is because he has reservations and requires someone like you to push him to make the leap. Entrepreneurs are driven to make things happen, not be convinced. That behavior will only make things more difficult if he doesn't have the conviction to try himself now, regardless of what anyone says (good or bad). And there are folks out there that no amount of convincing would they ever change. Not saying your friend is like that but as others have said, it's coming out as a red flag.

In response to another response you made, social proof is not like a letter of recommendation. It's not his professors that will grant him social proof. Social proof is validation from people that matter to the VC's in their social circle.

steventruong··on Ask HN: Quitting a well paid job
Within 1 or 2 years I could be very well set up for life

Don't bet on this. If it happens, GREAT! If it doesn't, at least you won't be crushed. Success doesn't always happen the first time around. Sometimes it takes multiple plays before the jackpot lands.

But putting all of this aside, don't do it for money. Money is an important factor but as others have echoed on here, do it because doing what you enjoy/love outweighs what you make. Money is icing on the cake.

steventruong··on Ask HN: non-compete clauses in California
I am not a lawyer. This is just what I know.

Generally speaking, non-compete are not enforceable but there are exceptions to the rule (some of which don't apply to general employees and potentially some that I may not know about).

That hasn't stopped some companies from suing if an employee leaves to a competing company and have proprietary knowledge (albeit rare).

steventruong··on Ask HN: Self-Funded One-Person Business (Website or Software)
I believe Instagram is one
steventruong··on Hacker News Secret Menu
Once you pass 20 (I think that's the number), you can do polls. Once you pass 250, you can change the topcolor for the nav bar.
steventruong··on Ask HN: Do You Enjoy Programming or Do You Like What You Can Do With It?
Both =]

They are not mutually exclusive.

steventruong··on Ask HN: How long should an ideal resume be?
Personal opinion on what I look for...

One preferred. Two at most. Online version highly preferred in addition to print out.

Information overload is not necessary. Not all 14 years are necessary to be put on there even if all 14 years are relevant. Tackle exactly what the job is looking for.

Expand in cover letter if necessary.

steventruong··on Linus Should Use Windows 7
He had a gripe with a specific distro, not that all distros exhibit this problem. And Windows would not solve his overall usage needs and wants.
