stevebmark··on Some fish live beyond 100 and get healthier as they age
If you're curious to learn more, look into cold blooded vs warm blooded animals and longevity. Cold blooded animals might give us hints to slow aging in humans.

Energy expenditure might be related to longevity. Eating more and exercising more (and the energy required to keep your core temperature up) might kill you faster, maybe through free radical production from metabolism.

stevebmark··on Gamers at risk of irreversible hearing loss and tinnitus, study suggests
The title of the article literally says "irreversible"

Faxing is alive and well in medicine, since it's still the "secure" way to transfer documents. There are encrypted email solutions now, secure file transfer, and digital faxing, but I'm sure plenty of doctor's offices still use fax machines.
stevebmark··on Modeless Vim
They are the same thing of course, complexity is not relevant to the definition.

The main difference is Vim's editing modes are imperative. You have to glue together small painful commands to do what you want. Modern editors are declarative - you say "I want to move this file" or "I want to rename this variable" or "I'll drag this split here" and they do the rest.

stevebmark··on Modeless Vim
I've always disliked that Bram calls Vim a "modal" editor. All this means is your keyboard and mouse actions do different things based on what "mode" of the editor you're in. All editors are "modal" editors. In VSCode for example, if you've focused the search box, pressing up loads the previous search, compared to if you've focused the code area, pressing up goes up a line.

Vim purports to be more efficient than other editors because it's a modal editor, but that's nonsense.

stevebmark··on Bluesky has launched RSS feeds
This doesn't really matter. The Bluesky app has very few features, it's still invite only which limits the number of users, and engagement and active users are low. It's on a trajectory to death right now. The core of Bluesky, relay/BGS, still isn't proven. Over a year after launch there hasn't been significant progress in these areas.

It’s terrible writing AND I have bad taste*
stevebmark··on "Are We Automata?" by William James (1879)
I tried to read this but I can’t deal with the writing quality. I think it’s partly the historical nature of the piece, but James is a terrible writer. He is obtuse and pompous and clouds his meaning with confusing sentences. Even the first sentence is a nightmare to read. I’ll try again when I have more focus!

And yes, we have no free will. Not sure if that’s related to this piece.

On iOS you can click the icon to the left of the URL input and select reader viewer as well. Hides ads too.
stevebmark··on SSH-Snake: Automated SSH-Based Network Traversal
Is there any risk with running this locally just to see what SSH traversal is available? I have several legitimate hosts I SSH into regularly, some are cloud hosting.
stevebmark··on Terminal Smooth Scrolling
Does enabling smooth scrolling require downloading the author's custom shell? If so, this article should be flagged as misleading.
stevebmark··on Threads.net is the new app.net but with ads and interoperable
Yes, everyone hates Twitter. Threads is dead. Mastodon is terrible and has no chance. Bluesky had a chance but their development team has proven they can't ship features, so it will die soon. There is currently no Twitter replacement contender.
stevebmark··on Threads.net is the new app.net but with ads and interoperable
Threads is terrible. It’s already dead.
stevebmark··on Ugrep – a more powerful, fast, user-friendly, compatible grep
There are many grep variations. The Unix philosophy: do one thing well. The Unix reality: do many things poorly*

stevebmark··on High myopia is now the leading cause of blindness in Japan, China, and Taiwan
How is this related to my factual statement that "vision therapy to improve myopia is quackery"?
stevebmark··on IDEs we had 30 years ago
Vim is a text editor, not a code editor. It has always been fundamentally designed this way.
stevebmark··on High myopia is now the leading cause of blindness in Japan, China, and Taiwan
No, it doesn't. Vision therapy is reliably shown to be quackery in studies. Vision therapy doesn't make sense, as there is no known signal to cause ECM breakdown / eye reshaping to reduce axial elongation.

Myopia is a terrible thing to discuss, there are so many people guessing and making false claims about things.

stevebmark··on High myopia is now the leading cause of blindness in Japan, China, and Taiwan
Just research "peripheral defocus."

stevebmark··on High myopia is now the leading cause of blindness in Japan, China, and Taiwan
There is no known way to reverse myopia outside of surgery. A single diopter change is irrelevant in this discussion.
stevebmark··on High myopia is now the leading cause of blindness in Japan, China, and Taiwan
Essentially when things in your peripheral vision are in focus, aka things close to your eye like screens, your eye thinks it’s over focusing, and it grows longer to defocus, causing myopia. Preventing focus in peripheral vision removes this signal. The eye is very dumb, it grows on response to light focus. The brain is not involved.
stevebmark··on High myopia is now the leading cause of blindness in Japan, China, and Taiwan
Read the study you linked to. Jesus.
stevebmark··on High myopia is now the leading cause of blindness in Japan, China, and Taiwan
Emmitropization is a fact. Peripheral over focus causing myopia is well documented and peripheral defocus is also well studied. Peripheral defocus lenses and low dose atropine are well studied. The mechanism is understood, and proved by multiple different ways to interfere with the mechanism.

Optometrists are clothing salespeople. Only some ophthalmologists even know about atropine as an option.

stevebmark··on High myopia is now the leading cause of blindness in Japan, China, and Taiwan
The more myopic you are, the higher your risk of retinal detachment, and other eye issues and diseases.
stevebmark··on High myopia is now the leading cause of blindness in Japan, China, and Taiwan
We know how myopia works now. Low dose atropine and glasses with fogged edges reliably slow or stop myopia progression. Myopia is not reversible by natural means. Sunlight is maybe related but it is more likely the proven mechanism of near work, specifically keeping peripheral vision in focus which tells the eye to grow longer (there is no brain involvement, the eye does this alone). Myopia discussions are terrible, they are filled with people offering advice and guesses on something they don’t know anything about, and people claiming it’s curable.
stevebmark··on High myopia is now the leading cause of blindness in Japan, China, and Taiwan
Myopia is not reversible with any known means except surgery. Your results are irrelevant and minor changes could simply be due to choroid thickness changes. There are comments like yours on every myopia post where people claim minor changes (1-2 diopters) then are never heard from again.
stevebmark··on New plans for self-hosted Zulip customers
I’ve seen engineers lead the charge to force Zulip on a company. I get it, it’s an engineering friendly tool. Otherwise it’s a fundamentally terrible application that is not appropriate for a whole company to use. I hope your mutiny happens!
stevebmark··on Omg.lol: An Oasis on the Internet
It takes blog posts to discover these because Mastodon micro communities aren't discoverable and no one knows which ones to sign up for. Mastodon has no long term potential. We're still waiting for the Twitter replacement.
