Same with web content most of this content is likely still somewhere. While you and I have no access too it someone does, whether they'll share it with us is another thing all together.
stephentmcm··on Scientists Help Movie Writers Make Films ‘Plausible-Ish’
This is justified in the book as being for thanksgiving dinner, iirc Mark goes as far as explaining how they where treated that still allows them to grow later.
stephentmcm··on Scientists Help Movie Writers Make Films ‘Plausible-Ish’
I've yet to see The Martian, but have read the book and found it pretty reasonable for the behaviour of all characters, I guess the advantage of a book is that the author can describe the internal thoughts of a character much more clearly than an actor can portray on screen. Further while I'm not rocket science (I prefer rocket surgeon, thanks KSP), my understanding is that the science in The Martian was pretty solid the whole way through.
stephentmcm··on A rant about application configuration
Are they actually complaining that using a transpiler needs configuration? Also if-it-ain't-broke-don't-upgrade-it? If they liked Babel v5 why jump on v6?
stephentmcm··on NSA Patents
I thought prior art only worked for published (prior) art? E.g. I can't claim I invented something before you if I never published/released my invention?

Edit: Literally the first two paragraphs of wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prior_art

stephentmcm··on Show HN: Fastnomad – Backpacks designed for digital nomads
You need about 1000 more pictures before I'd go anywhere near the buy button on one of these.

What's the inside like? How's it laid out? How much beer can I fit inside it? If I have a weeks worth of clothes stuffed in there can I still get to my laptop charger easily? Is there way to store my now funky undies on day 6? How waterproof is it? What's the internal color? What's the internal fabric?

ALL those questions (and more) need detailed smart answers if you want to sell me these over a Chrome Bag or similar.

stephentmcm··on Hi, I’m from the games industry. Governments, please stop us
>b) We overturn the majority of our current social psychology knowledge and realize that yes, people actually do have absolute free will

Err... All current research suggests that you have almost no free will and are little more than a complex set of reactions to external stimulus.

stephentmcm··on Atlassian's success reminds what a crappy place Australia is for tech business
IF you have telstra/optus cable running long your power poles you might as well sign up for it now and settle for disappointment as that now counts as you access to the NBN.
stephentmcm··on Show HN: Paypyrus – Electronic money in physical form with Venmo
>Paypyrus is versatile like cash

But with none of the security, what a useful idea... Could I not just print the same dollar twenty times then it's a race to see who redeems it first? Cute idea though I guess.

stephentmcm··on Next Generation Eclipse IDE
Well to be fair it is a pretty good framework for building shonky code.

Of note guys there's a little ! icon button in the top of the page to report this gist. It's basically encouraging spam and as everyone has pointed out, is likely not technically sound.
stephentmcm··on Show HN: Magic Keyboard
Nice but needs some form of clean up running as the animation slows down more and more. A quick peak at the code shows there's a platform to catch the letter but there doesn't appear to be a clean up to delete them after?
stephentmcm··on Facebook '2G Tuesdays' to better understand markets like India
Minor point but I'm fairly certain Telstra NextG is a 4G network.
stephentmcm··on Show HN: Delta – view your Git split diffs in the browser
Not really actually, I was going to recommend Solarized[1] and base16[2] but both fail to pass AAA according to WAVE[3]. I'd recommend installing the WAVE extension for Chrome or Firefox as a start point.

[1] http://ethanschoonover.com/solarized/ [2] http://chriskempson.github.io/base16/ [3] http://wave.webaim.org/

stephentmcm··on Show HN: Delta – view your Git split diffs in the browser
Nice but the diff's fail contrast levels for accessibility. I have trouble with contrast and I can barely read the diffs and certainly wouldn't use it for any serious amount of time.

You're exaggerating but correct. https://hn.algolia.com/?query=hirelarge&sort=byDate&dateRang...
stephentmcm··on Trix: A rich text editor for everyday writing
One thing this gets right that heaps of other WYSIWYG's get wrong is lists. You can create a proper multi-level list here with order and unordered lists nested inside each other correctly. This sort of stuff is actually important for creating accessible documents as things like flowcharts need a plain text version and nesting lists is a reasonable way of displaying these.

It the typo in the images intentional?
stephentmcm··on A robotic sewing machine could throw garment workers out of a job
It would indeed be lucrative and I'm sure they have at least a group or two researching exactly that.

Thinking of it now my comment missed the availability of iron on seam tape which is used for water proofing but as I understand it isn't strong enough to bond pieces together without stitching.

stephentmcm··on A robotic sewing machine could throw garment workers out of a job
We have one, invented thousands of years ago it involves cleverly inserting a string like solid binding agent repeatedly through the two pieces creating a flexible and strong bind.

But seriously, how many glues can you think of that are as flexible and durable as thread?

stephentmcm··on Why are working class kids less likely to get elite jobs? They study too hard
I've heard (and believe) this too but does anyone have any decent sources for it? I find the portrayal of Bush in the media interesting as while he played the fool regularly, there's no way he got to POTUS without being a smart operator.
stephentmcm··on The man who mistook his wife for a hat (1983)
For anyone looking for a great hard-scifi read Blindsight and it's sequel Echopraxia are actually brilliant reads.
stephentmcm··on How fixed-gear bikes can confuse Google’s self-driving cars
Where do you live that little old ladies are jumping out in-front of fast moving traffic with cliff edges that lack any safety barrier?!

The car is going to make the best effort to minimise impacts to its self, given there's a cliff for it to fall off it's not going to swerve over it. Also as said in a sister comment while you're car full of precious children go over the cliff you can find peace in the knowledge that on average less children have died because there's self driving cars.

stephentmcm··on A Field Study on Technical Debt
I'm very glad I don't and all power to you spreading the good word :)
stephentmcm··on A Field Study on Technical Debt
You need to look harder then, we tick all three and even use Gitflow. With back ups used all the time for testing live state locally and a CI 1-click (well 5 or 6 actually...) deploy to Test/Stage/Prod.
stephentmcm··on Compasses don't work on Mars, so how do you navigate?
Thanks, I was being mildly sarcastic in my post but having the math laid out is great.
stephentmcm··on A Dutch city is giving money away to test the basic income theory
I'll give you the size and population thing but "ethnically homogenous populations" is bullshit: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/... - ~79% White

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/... ~80% White/Dutch

So both nations have a similar level of "ethnically homogenous populations".

stephentmcm··on A Dutch city is giving money away to test the basic income theory
Note that this £240 billion will have the overheads of running the welfare system built into it too. So the actual pension checks are only a percentage of that figure, with a basic income that's not means tested the government has far less overhead.
stephentmcm··on Compasses don't work on Mars, so how do you navigate?
Did you read the article? That's exactly what the author was pointing out. Also this article and wiki have ruined The Martian for me.
