My day job is to download random programs suggested by people I haven't met before, and post "hot takes" about them on the Internet.

Opinions are those of Gilgamech Technologies.

stephengillie··on Fear, trust and JavaScript: When types and functional programming fail
The biggest difference - not needing to compile - is offset by the slowness of Powershell. If only one language was best across all metrics.
stephengillie··on The Many Colors of Sound (2016)
The office of my current employer has speakers in the ceiling, every 20 feet or so. They play white noise through these at about 40-60 decibels - about the volume of a moderately busy coffee shop or bar. This lets them buy shorter cubicles, so you can look across the entire office building.

The noise they use is maddening to me, despite sounding like air going through the air ducts.

stephengillie··on Fear, trust and JavaScript: When types and functional programming fail
I really like the type system in Powershell and wish JavaScript had something similar. Typescript is a mess by comparison.

  [string]$String = "Dog";

  $String = 5;
Cannot convert value 5 to type "System.Objects.String"

Just make sure the Promise has a Catch to handle errors.

Err...you're talking about promises from the community, not Promises in code.

stephengillie··on Some private equity firms are furious over a paper in a dermatology journal
Ah, the ol' fire sale.

At other times in history, it was the seller whose house (or business) was literally on fire, trying to sell to an unwitting buyer.

stephengillie··on VW CEO says they’ll have ‘EVs as good as Tesla’s for half the price by 2020’
Oh, automakers are finally putting security on their wide-open Car Area Networks - like the one that let a hacker stop a reporter's car - and this you see as only a bad thing?
stephengillie··on VW CEO says they’ll have ‘EVs as good as Tesla’s for half the price by 2020’
I'm still looking for a plug-in Camry or Tacoma.

Maybe some stations will have charging lobbies, where you can charge your phone and take a nap (charge yourself) while the car charges.
stephengillie··on Morocco abruptly drops clock change
Only if the business pays them for the lunch break. (I was wrong about it being mandatory unpaid.)

stephengillie··on In Antarctica, climate change is having surprising impacts
Who says they're looking at these things?

I'm surprised these politicians can hear about the trans-polar shipping route opening up, and still disbelieve.

stephengillie··on Morocco abruptly drops clock change
Yes, let's base our society on an archaic device that can't even accurately tell the time.
stephengillie··on Morocco abruptly drops clock change
Do you mean 9-6 or 10-7?

I've done a 10-7 shift, it's miserable. Waste half your morning, and half your evening. You have to get ready for work when stores and banks are just opening, and you get home just as those shops are closing.

I prefer 7-4 because it leaves a bit of late afternoon and the whole evening.

stephengillie··on Morocco abruptly drops clock change
That's only 7 hours. I don't know anyone who only works 9-5. Many either work 8-5 or 9-6.

(Lunches aren't paid, that's a WA State law.)

These do make beta ameloid sound like a virus-net, sticking to any and all virii inside the brain. And since herpes has that time-release capsule to keep reinfecting a host user, that person's brain could have more beta ameloid plaque to clean. The efficacy of brain cleaning goes back to numerous factors, including age, hours of sleep, air quality, diabetes and other diseases, etc.

In short, it's based on number of virus infections, which herpes greatly increases. So I agree that your hypothesis is sound.

stephengillie··on One Windows Kernel
What would replace it? Thousands of individual config files? That's a mess to manage.

What the Windows Registry needs is a REST API.

And with hybrid and electric cars, mechanics and auto body shops have to know 3-phase electricity too.
stephengillie··on Tesla Faces Criminal Probe Over Whether It Misstated Production Figures
There is so much money involved, on all sides, that all Tesla-based articles are suspect.

You gotta work if you want to eat. For most Americans, at least.
stephengillie··on The Digital Gap Between Rich and Poor Kids Is Not What Was Expected
The addictive screen argument is almost as tired as the argument that video games are bad.

It's like the argument about students starting out the window, or at a ceiling, during a lesson. The answer is not to remove the windows, nor is "scolding the ape" a good solution. The real answer is to compete on engagement, and make the lesson more interesting than what's outside the window.

Likewise, the way to have more people engaged in a sporting event is to make the game more engaging. But then more people yell obscenities at the referee.

In the end, all of this "screen time" nonsense is just a dumb way for some people to feel better than other people.

Wikipedia: The normal function of Aβ is not well understood.[7]

Most of the page is dedicated to the Alzheimer's connection. Even that quote came from Alzheimer's research.

Would you feel better if the parent were deeply involved in a newspaper or book? How about if the parent was constantly screaming obscenities at the referee? Parents aren't honor or duty bound to pay rapt attention to every second of their child's life. It's one human caring for another, and few humans have identical interests.

Do you have any information about beta amyloid that doesn't involve Alzheimer's? I wanted to learn about the enzyme itself. Filtering "-Alzheimer's" on Google provides no articles, merely fact sheets and ordering forms.
stephengillie··on When Telecom Companies Search Your Home for Piracy
Law is an industry entirely based around charisma and precedent. Entirely "(s)he said, (s)he said". It's quite boring on a technical level, because maths are rarely involved. And quite frustrating on a human level, because judgments are based more on the judge's previous meal and night's sleep than the case facts.

I was concerned when Deng was in power, but not anymore. China always seem to get in their own way.
stephengillie··on “Stress Hormone” Cortisol Linked to Early Toll on Thinking Ability
Herpes is a normal virus, for the most part. The key mutation that makes it so annoying is its time-release capsules to reinfect cells every so often. So which "byproducts" are cleaned out?
stephengillie··on FDA approves new drug to treat influenza
Indeed, it's unfortunate that some people can't even continue to work from their homes while sick.

There are many theories about the cause of Alzheimer's.

Previously on HN:

- Alzheimer's is caused by dirty air. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18230932

- Alzheimer's is caused by lack of sleep. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18228627

- Alzheimer's is a form of diabetes. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4578267

- Alzheimer's is caused by herpes. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18265115

Also, brain damage is a result of Alzheimer's, not a cause.

An EMP wirelessly overvolts circuits, burning them like a blown fuse. What kind of magnetic field would it take to induce too much current inside an Arduino?
