My day job is to download random programs suggested by people I haven't met before, and post "hot takes" about them on the Internet.

Opinions are those of Gilgamech Technologies.

So hybrids are not as exempt as earlier discussion would suggest.

Any thoughts on converting a hybrid to an EV?

Edit: The engine cavity should be able to hold a lithium battery ~250+ lbs, and the 1.6 kWh NiMH battery is another ~250+ lbs that can be replaced with another lithium battery pack. If a Powerwall were used for each, the car would have 27.4 kWh, which I think would power my Camry Hybrid only about 30 miles. So maybe not very feasible until after another battery technology upgrade.

It's like a solid state version of a giant flywheel under the car. Bonus in that there's no extra angular momentum.

You would be surprised how many times you use that one EV mile during the average 30 mile commute. In traffic and cities, you often don't need more than the 40 HP given by the transmission alone.

Hybrids have a torque curve that starts like an EV, then continues like a gas car. This means great torque from 0 mph through highway speeds.

And then there's idle at stop lights, the biggest waste of fuel and a huge cause of pollution. Modern engines use 6 seconds of fuel when starting, but most cars idle for minutes at a light.

stephengillie··on Finding data items in one field that contradict data items in another field
Mold can become a bad issue if your bathroom isn't ventilated after showers. I've rented for decades in WA State and every lease I've signed has had a mold clause. The building was built 4 years ago; I watched them build it.

Life is full of scary problems. What if your car catches fire? Life can be made scarier if you pretend that you have to solve all the problems yourself. We can do anything, but we cannot do everything by ourselves.

If fish die, surely some other life form will fill that niche, and we'll eat that. It's not as though humans are the most adaptive life form in existence.

Last week I signed a lease that stated "Mold have existed since the beginning of time." While scientifically inaccurate, I believe legally it is close enough.

Everything is a catastrophic problem to someone. Sensationalism is about the worst way to communicate this, and is likely why so many refuse to believe. The reality of climate change is that we're trading inhospitable poles for an inhospitable equator.

Yes, this will be painful to those who have to adapt or relocate. But it is a form of NIMBYism.

stephengillie··on Gaia spots stars flying between galaxies
How would it impact a solar system if one of these relativistic stars got too close? Any chance it could pick up a few planets, or would they mostly be flung into space?

Along that point, what does the heliosphere of such a star look like - a giant comet?

Lastly, were a life-bearing planet sent into space this way have any chance of maintaining that life without a parent star to heat and magnetically shield it?

This is what climate change news feels like too.

> "Blah happened at City/Nation and it is potentially a planet ending event."

It's hard to take Chicken Little serious. All of the sensationalism feels like a magician waving a cloth with one hand, to distract the audience from the other hand.

Amazon knows most of that $15/hour will be paid into Amazon - regardless of employer - as they have 51% of American commerce. They're turning America into a huge company town.

stephengillie··on Insufficient Sleep Associated with Risky Teen Behavior
"Abuse" is Newspeak, it means "abnormal use". When depression causes you to sleep to avoid life situations, it could even be called addiction.
stephengillie··on Do we really need eight hours of uninterrupted sleep a night?
I've used Sleep for Android to track my sleeping patterns since about 2013. I consistently get 3-4 hours of deep sleep per night in 6 hours of actual sleep.

Sometimes it's simpler to watch an hour of YouTube (or post on HN, upvotes are easier at night), than to get up and lay back down several times.

The app pauses sleep tracking when it can tell you're awake. This makes it annoying to see I've been sleeping from 9pm until 7am, and only got 6.5 hours of sleep.

stephengillie··on Insufficient Sleep Associated with Risky Teen Behavior
Sleeping too much is also a common symptom of depression, as the user abuses sleep to escape their life.

> The funny thing is that I predict that this HN thread will lead hundreds of folks to tell stories of confirmation bias.

Confirmation bias looks like on-topic content, and often spurs copycat posts that look like engagement. It's one of the faster ways of growing the number next to your user name in the upper right, which causes a dopamine release in most users.

stephengillie··on Do we really need eight hours of uninterrupted sleep a night?
The sleep doesn't have to be uninterrupted, just in multiples of the 45-minute sleep cycle. I get more than 6 hours almost every night.

stephengillie··on Do we really need eight hours of uninterrupted sleep a night?
Why would I see a doctor for a natural process? Besides, it's unhealthy to sit for 8 hours, so it's probably not healthy to lay for 8 hours.

Is there a possibility for failure in seeking medical care?

stephengillie··on Do we really need eight hours of uninterrupted sleep a night?
I'm suspecting it's due to decades of working overnight in tech call centers, and being oncall for over a year, with servers that would regularly fail overnight.
stephengillie··on Physicists investigate why matter and antimatter are not mirror images
There was a short story about an antimatter alien who visited Earth. It shook hands with a human and both were annihilated.
