stephen-mw··on A Quick Introduction to LXD
Someone here on HN encouraged others to check out LXD in a previous thread a week ago. I did it and was really blown away. It really did feel like I was running virtual machines from an extremely fast hypervisor.

What mattered to me most was getting away from "1 process per container" mentality. Phusion realized right away that this was an unnecessary constraint and built their base image[0] to help others.

With LXD you really get the best of both worlds. You can containerize your applications without having to re-write your entire stack because it also requires cron or a few other processes. Ain't nobody got time for that.

stephen-mw··on Why Buying Provisioned IOPS on RDS Might Be a Mistake
general purpose SSD offers a good bang for your buck. The "best/most consistent" disk performance on amazon is still (unfortunately) ephemeral disks in a raid set. But if you turn that instance off (or Amazon decides to turn it off for you...) bye-bye to your local data. Not an acceptable risk for a database.

And still, after all these years, AWS won't replace a failed ephemeral disk in your instance. Is there a technical reason for this??

If one of the large cloud providers wants to become competitive in this space, all they need to do is offer instances with local storage that are in a hardware raid set with truly large volumes. Heavy disk-io applications are still much better suited on-prem where you have the flexibility to build these types of monsters. 5TB spinning disks are going for under $200 these days.

Or AWS could just start replacing disks on their m1 series machines...

stephen-mw··on Supreme Court Rules Extending Traffic Stop for Dog Sniff Unconstitutional [pdf]
Turning down an optional search of your persons or belongings does not constitute reasonable suspicion. I wish the courts would have sent a stronger message to this point. Clearly Officer Struble interpreted mr. Rodriguez decline as a reason to be suspicious of him.

Always say no. Always decline. This needs to be come the default/norm. Read about how inaccurate field substance tests are here[0]. People go to jail for this stuff even though they are law-abiding citizens who actually _didn't_ have anything to hide.

stephen-mw··on Send Money to Friends in Messenger
The thing I don't like about this is that I'm forced to become Facebook friends with someone to send or receive money. That's an unnecessary layer of consideration.

I want to send and receive money quickly, easily, and cheaply. Now I'm also seeing what Ted is up to on my news feed. He's my Facebook friend now because we were all at a restaurant last week and they didn't let us split the bill.

stephen-mw··on Varnish Dashboard
This is extremely slick. Nice job!
stephen-mw··on Purism Aims to Build a Philosophically Pure Laptop
I'm excited about a company that will ensure a good, compatible experience with linux on a laptop. I develop on mac osx and linux vms (vagrant). I want to move to linux but the linux desktop experience just isn't there yet.
stephen-mw··on Be your own VPN provider with OpenBSD
If anyone is interested, here's a script that will install openvpn on a raspberry pi in one command[1].

I use it along with the openvpn ios app on my phone when I'm on corporate wifi, or I connect to it with my laptop any time I'm in a coffee shop. Just note it's meant to tunnel traffic to a "safe" network, not anonymize you on the internet.

stephen-mw··on Apple Reports Fourth Quarter Results
I'm long in apple for several reasons:

1. Apple's P/E is way to low for a company that literally sells the best and highest rated products on the market. Historically you pay a P/E _premium_ for these types of stocks, not a discount. The company is downright cheap.

2. ApplePay has a ton of potential. Just in the other news thread others were complaining that moving to chip & pin cards is basically just changing the fraud, not fixing it. ApplePay's tech passes the smell test, and the people who will be using it have expendable money.

3. The Apple Watch. Who knows how it will sell? I will say I am always impressed with Apple's design and polish and it's hard to picture a crappy product. Maybe it's a hit or maybe it just raises their bottom line, either way it's unlikely to drag on profits.

We'll see how it works out. These earnings include only 6 days of iPhone 6 sales... I worry about Apple in my portfolio probably the least compared to other stocks in the S&P 500. It pays a dividend for crying out loud! I have to remind myself not go over diversification rules...
