steipete··on WebAssembly: A New Hope
PSPDFKit for Web is a hybrid renderer. It can render on the client or server, depending on device capability and power. This allows you to view a 500MB+ file even on a slow connection via your smartphone, make notes that are instantly synced to our on-premise server via https://pspdfkit.com/instant/ and then later you can continue to markup the file on either your desktop browser or maybe a native iOS app such as https://pdfviewer.io/.

We currently deliver SDKs for all major platforms with Windows coming in Q4 and they all have the same high-fidelity renderer and deliver the same result.

With pdf.js, how the output renders also depends on your browser, and it just doesn't support some of the more complex graphics with knockout groups, patterns and gradients.

See Mozilla's presentation where they say that full support for these is not even planned: https://youtu.be/4yLzRoErOHw?t=20m27s

Our customers are in Enterprise B2B space. Some might still use IE11 (which we fully support). Some care that their PDF files do not leak and only want streamed access. Most care about annotation syncing. Some apply watermarks on-demand. We solve a different category of needs than the more consumer-focussed pdf.js.

steipete··on Edge displays “123456” in PDF but prints “114447”
Maybe we really should bring https://pdfviewer.io to Windows. Looks like the default app is somewhat crap :P
steipete··on BinDiff now available for free
Is there a version for OS X?
steipete··on Reverse – reverse engineering tool with pseudo-C output
So, just like IDA from Hex-Rays, but way worse?
steipete··on SQLite developer must have received a lot of phone calls
Somebody didn't give credit here when posting on HN. https://twitter.com/mplappert/status/575957042466320384
steipete··on Drop millions of allocations by using a linked list
Ruby people discovering algorithms ducks
steipete··on DuetDisplay and Unattributed Open-Source
It's always possible that they have custom contracts with the creators of these open source projects; CocoaSplit could have offered them a custom license without x264 so that part can be dial-licensed.
steipete··on PDFium: Chrome’s PDF rendering engine is now open-source
Sadly no tests, no documentation (except the documentation from FoxIt). Not even source code documentation.
steipete··on Native iOS Torrent Management
Seriously, WTF, Apple. They pass this but rejected another Torrent control program (for the more popular Transmission) http://www.iphonefreak.com/2009/05/apple-rejects-transmissio...
steipete··on Xcode 4.4 adds support for Obj-C literals
Also see this guide how to use subscripting in Xcode 4.4 http://petersteinberger.com/blog/2012/using-subscripting-wit...
steipete··on Pair (YC W12) is a Path for the Two of Us
Hm, you did realize that the comment sounded very much as being sarcastic, did you?
steipete··on Twitter Bootstrap 2.0 pre-release demo
is there any changelog for 2.0?
steipete··on Why I Hate Android
Don't forget the fact that they use Google's closed source software like GMaps, GMail, Market... and strictly they don't allow you to run that on custom firmware.
steipete··on Whatsapp security hole allows changing status message of other users
It's not changing status anymore, did they already block the site's IP?
steipete··on NetBeans IDE 7.1 Released
NetBeans is still around? If you don't want to use Eclipse, try IntelliJ.
steipete··on The NewsBlur iPhone App - visual feed reader with intelligence
I'm sorry, but why is this on Hacker News? The app looks like crap! Yellow folder icons? Come on! It seems as if it was written at the time where iOS 2 was new. Not bad, but just totally not able to compete with fancy apps like FlipBoard or even Reeder. If this would run on Android, maybe. But iOS? The bar went up.

So, do I miss something here?

steipete··on Poll: Should we rename Amber.js?
I just searched for "Amber" on Google, and the first 5 (!) pages didn't show me anything even remotely Smalltalk-related. I didn't looked any further. Stick with Amber.js.
steipete··on VendorKit – an iOS library management system
Vendor hasn't been updated in almost a month: https://github.com/keithpitt/vendor/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md

Compare this to CocoaPods: https://github.com/CocoaPods/CocoaPods/commits/master/

steipete··on VendorKit – an iOS library management system
I'm also suggesting https://github.com/CocoaPods/CocoaPods. Better solution, better support from the community, actively deployed.
steipete··on Amazon App Store's Free App of the Day is Perceived As Probable Spyware
Why? Because of "Get information about the currently or recently running tasks: a thumbnail representation of the tasks, what activities are running in it, etc."?
steipete··on A better way to read HN on the iPad - Happy Thanksgiving From Onswipe
Onswipe is horrible. Either use native scrolling or web-scrolling. Don't fake it. It doesn't work, fails in the most crappy ways. Just stop.
steipete··on Stacked views lib for iPad (as in Twitter's app)
I've seen those, but they all were too inflexible. My stacked view calculates the widths dynamically, so any UIViewController can be added, not only one or two specific sizes.
steipete··on Politician Violates His Own Two-Strikes Anti-Piracy Plan
This is just great. Here's an even better article in german about the whole story (from the german pirates) http://piratig.de/2011/09/30/kaudergate-2ndstrike-sehr-geehr....

Lucky for Kauder, as a politician he's immune to law, but its nevertheless absolutely embarrassing.

steipete··on Adv. iOS crash reports for beta & app store and now improved beta distribution
No, absolutely not. With free products, you are the customer. I don't like this idea either. Also, HockeyApp is far superior to TestFlight. They had In-App-Updates at launch day.
steipete··on Cocoapods: An Objective-C library package manager
Anyone tried Zimt? https://github.com/zimt/zimt - looks similar to cocoapods, looks more mature.
steipete··on IOS Boilerplate: A base template for iOS apps
You are. There are much better choices out there. Check AFNetworking for example.
steipete··on IOS Boilerplate: A base template for iOS apps
There are much better choices now, this project is a bit outdated.

I'd base a new app on AFNetworking, not asi. ImageManager is not needed, as AFNetworking is better suited.

Pull-down-to-refresh is overused already, and most times the wrong context. (Originally, you were loading new tweets ON TOP, not general loading)

The whole tableview examples shouldn't be necessary.

I wouldn't put maps in a example, most apps aren't gonna use it.

JSONKit is great, but also soon iOS4-Legacy.

Adding SVProgressHUD only leads to apps that over-use the modal-loading principle, like the GitHub Issues app. The better way is to make a non-obstrusive, non-modal loading inside the controller, which can be cancelled anytime.

As for the random categories... meh. Get BlocksKit or something actually useful.

steipete··on Apple vs. Microsoft: Which user interface do you prefer?
What's wrong with just pressing the rotate button more than once? When I see a picture that has is rotated wrong, i just think "rotate". Thinking about left? right? needs more brainpower, and finding the small icon also. I'm faster just hitting the button until I'm satisfied with the rotation. It's EXIF rotate anyway, it doesn't change the picture quality.
steipete··on I bought a webOS device and went to Taiwan. This is what I learned.
Not disclosing until the very end that he works for Mozilla. Way to go! #not
