I tend fat-finger the "flag" button a lot on my phone, sorry about that!

steinuil··on Bazel can now build Haskell
I doubt Bazel will take off for most open source projects due to being written in Java, but I do share the sentiment.

I've been meaning to try and write a somewhat saner build system to replace the Auto* hell, at least for C and C++. I'm focused on other things right now but I've been studying and collecting information about the architecture of many other build systems for a while, and some of them are so much ahead of those used in open source projects it's not even funny. At the very least I'll be writing a lengthy blog post with my findings.

steinuil··on Elm changed my mind about unpopular languages
It actually has... due to not having any major release in 2 years.
steinuil··on The Open Sourcerer's Magic Spell Book
The unix philosophy != command line tools usually preinstalled on your system.
steinuil··on Ask HN: Which functional language has the best ecosystem for a web backend?
I wouldn't call its ecosystem great, but if you like complex type hackery and don't need to do anything very complicated, Ur/Web can get you quite far.

It's very hard to learn, especially if you're not that familiar with Haskell and SML/OCaml, but once you grok it writing CRUD apps is a breeze. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time looking at the standard library's signature files.

steinuil··on The Art of Conducting
The most basic function of a director in a concert is to dictate the tempo. You can make do without a director in a small group of people by just looking at each other in tricky moments, but when the people involved become dozens or hundreds it is impossible to stay in tempo without a director.

You could take the director out and people would still be able to play, but it would most likely result in a much worse performance.

steinuil··on Never edit a method, always rewrite it?
I always split my editor window vertically, make some space over the method I want to replace and make sure the old version is visible on the other window, and then I rewrite it while referencing the old one. I only copy and paste stuff over if there's something I really don't wanna write again.
steinuil··on Using LD_PRELOAD to cheat, inject features and investigate programs (2013)
If I'm not mistaken putting DLLs in the same directory as the executable lets you do the same on Windows. Mods and cracks for videogames usually plant a fake DirectX dll in the game folder.
steinuil··on Carp, a compiled Lisp with type inference and a borrow checker
The selling point of lisp is macros, and macros alone. Different dialects will have different characteristics: Common Lisp is dynamically typed and usually makes heavy use of mutation, others like Lux are purely functional and statically typed.

> wouldn't it just be Rust with parenthesis?

That's pretty much what it is.

steinuil··on LA Times barred from Disney movies after report on corporate welfare
That's not necessarily true, lots of gamers are just casual gamers who will only buy the blockbusters, just as with movies, and will probably not go beyond checking the metacritic score before buying, or even worse they will preorder it before the reviews are even out.

I think the main difference is that AAA games are much more expensive than a movie ticket, so the percentage of people who do this is lower.

steinuil··on Who’s Sitting Next to You on the Subway? An R Train in September
I've heard from a few cyclists about people they cycled with who got into pretty violent fist fights with some people, some even had to call an ambulance after that.

My suggestion is to always apologize even if you're not in the wrong, because getting into fights, or even angry, for silly things like that is not worth it.

steinuil··on Seven habits of effective text editing (2000)
This comment appears every single time there's a discussion on the unwieldiness of code as text, probably ever since online discussions were a thing. Shouldn't someone have come up with something radically better by now (instead of just complaining about it)?
steinuil··on Clojure/Conj 2017 – Opening Keynote by Rich Hickey [video]
I don't think he has explored Haskell's type system that deeply, since he mentioned Haskell as a complex language along with Java and C++. Haskell has a very simple core.
steinuil··on Git git git git git
I use vimperator, so the only program I use a lot which still doesn't recognize ctrl+w is Hexchat.

My friends have gotten used to see me part the channel and rejoin shortly after, cursing my fingers.

steinuil··on Upterm – A terminal emulator and interactive shell based on Electron
It seems "for the 21st century" has become buzzwords for "running on Electron".
steinuil··on Dyslexia
When I was a kid I once wrote L and R on my forearms with a marker both for remembering which was which and to learn their name in english. I think it worked, because I always think of the corresponding forearm when I have to tell left from right.
steinuil··on Dyslexia
I've been diagnosed with dyacalculia and I always have to use a similar trick to the alligator mnemonics to figure out which is "greater than" and "less than". But I think it has more to do with telling left from right, which I also have problems with.
steinuil··on Vigil, the eternal morally vigilant programming language
So this is essentially a creative implementation of the contracts model from Eiffel. I like Racket's implementation a lot, which is coupled with its module system.
steinuil··on 10 most popular coding fonts
I've been using Fixedsys Excelsior for months and I love it; it's pretty big compared to most bitmap fonts and it being bitmap keeps me from messing with fontconfig's hinting more than necessary. The only flaw is that it doesn't have an italic or bold version.

It does have a variant with programming ligatures though, if you're into that:

steinuil··on Clean Code concepts adapted for PHP
I'd like to recommend "Taking PHP Seriously" by Keith Adams, a lecture by an engineer at Facebook on the alleged good points of using PHP.
steinuil··on ReactOS 0.4.6 released
Does anybody have experience with using ReactOS for hosting e.g. videogame servers? I wanted to host the servers of a few old games in a vm (just for some friends), and I'd obviously much rather run ReactOS than some outdated Windows.
steinuil··on Base Rails 5.1 application with pre-configured tools and features
> Built to minimize the time spent writing boilerplate code and performing repetitive setup tasks

I never used Rails, but I thought its motto was "conventon over configuration"?

steinuil··on New implementation of Git in OCaml
That's not entirely true; GCC (and almost every other GPL-licensed compiler) has a specific exception for its runtime libraries that lets you distribute their compiled version under any license [1].

But for example, Ada Core's GNAT is licensed under GPL but doesn't have that exception, which makes the binaries it outputs be licensed under the GPL as well, to make you buy the Pro version of the compiler.

steinuil··on Fun vs. Computer Science (2016)
I think that's why Go is so popular right now. I find the language kind of depressing from a PLT perspective, but it was built taking into account practical requirements such as fast compile times, a standard formatting tool, ease of deployment, etc, which makes it a very good system.
steinuil··on D as a Better C
> how is this possible when it's garbage collected?

Common Lisp lets you give "hints" to the garbage collector, so you end up with pretty much what you'd have in C but without the manual memory management.

> Is there a certain Lisp you would recommend that's practical enough I'd use it for projects?

Racket is very nice and comes with great documentation, a huge standard library and a very handy IDE. Clojure was hyped a lot so it has lots of libraries, which however might be of dubious quality or unmaintained by now, and it's on the JVM, which might or might not be a good thing for you. Common Lisp is very versatile and "pragmatic", but lacking in external libraries.

steinuil··on D as a Better C
Common Lisp has some very fast implementations (I think SBCL is the fastest) and it was designed to be a systems language. It can be optimized to be as fast as C.
steinuil··on Ideal OS: Rebooting the Desktop Operating System
> But the solution is NOT to throw out a bunch of those old layers and replace them with new layers!!!

Neither is keeping everything as it is and keep pretending it's fine!

> When you throw away code and start from scratch, you are throwing away all that knowledge.

I disagree with Joel on here. There's lots to be learned from throwing everything away and starting from scratch, and if anything those innovations could make their way into the current infrastructure, as it has happened with Midori and Windows.

steinuil··on Why Go is my favorite programming language
The compiler complaining when you do things wrong makes it much easier than C to write correct programs, if anything.
steinuil··on Vue.js vs. React
Good point about the whitespace, but I'd still rather have the templates inside my code than separate the two, mentally parsing two separate languages with different syntax and stitching them together is a lot more mental overhead IMO.
steinuil··on Vue.js vs. React
What's with the hate for JSX? I think handling HTML as data makes much more sense and is much more convenient than dealing with dumb templates or weird DSLs like Vue's or Angular's.
steinuil··on Why Go is my favorite programming language
Yes, my impression is that Go was created partly to be used in corporate environments to replace Java with a less verbose language that scaled well, and it seems to be doing well in that regard.
