stefan_··on Morningstar values SpaceX at $780B, half its IPO target
Except that whole payload-to-orbit business turned out to be a dream of SciFi readers, very prevalent on HN, not so much a real massive business. Which is why Starlink is still the biggest "customer". It's probably most interesting for governments, which is also of course why China & co. will have their own SpaceX, not this one.

And then meanwhile the whole thing got merged with the corpse of Twitter and the failed xAI. With the latter nobody can quite explain why it continues to employ extremely overpaid 20 year olds when it has meanwhile pivoted to selling energy to its biggest competitors, an absolute turd of a business.

stefan_··on Meta repeatedly snubs EU body over Facebook and Instagram user bans
There are no fines, this is about having recourse when big tech randomly bans you. Which you will remember, is a very common outcry on this very page.

This is just an uninformed EU rant.

You don't have your head quite on, they had already taken off!
stefan_··on United Airlines 767 returns to Newark after Bluetooth name sparks alert
3. The level of tech illiteracy combined with airplane security theater is an affront to all thinking people.
stefan_··on Danish Pension Blacklists SpaceX over 'Catastrophic Governance'
Facebook is still a Delaware company, with lots of established case law for what Zuckerberg can and can not do, voting majority or not. SpaceX is now some Texas corporation with a state legislature ready to enable whatever Musk wants.
stefan_··on Is This Sustainable?
My favorite, guy comes back from 6 month parental leave to force upon people in the trenches his epiphany on "GenAI".
stefan_··on Exit IP VPN servers mitigation rollout
Which you absolutely shouldn't use, because just like Tor Browser before, a vulnerability in the browser can be immediately escalated into decloaking your real IP. Ideally the proxying doesn't even happen on the same machine.
stefan_··on FreeBSD Foundation executive director tries daily driving FreeBSD on laptop
If only the Linux Foundation was primarily funding development of Linux, it's hard to describe what it is they are doing exactly, but it's a bit like a social club for Middle Managers and other insignificant people, building ecosystems^TM, connections and synergies^TM, and of course the Linux brand. Starting initiatives and such.

Gaze upon a premier Linux Foundation project:

stefan_··on Why is Vivado 2026.1 dropping Linux support for free tier?
Doesn't help that just to start out you are looking at a 110+ GB size for their tools, which as far as anyone can tell, isn't really justified by anything.
stefan_··on Google's Antigravity bait and switch
I think it was started in the Cursor time and by the time the turd shipped, momentum had very obviously shifted to Claude code style agentic products.
stefan_··on Anthropic is expanding to Colossus2. Will use GB200
Valuable? If SpaceX is a majority "resell electricity" business, its valuation will be a tiny fraction of what they are trying to push.
stefan_··on SpaceX S-1
I think the ISP story is a bit shitty outside some niche markets (mobile internet on airplanes and the like), but the military applications are massive. Everything is moving into drones and Starlink terminals are small enough to fit on them all, while being essentially unjammable, giving you a coarse location signal on top and plenty of bandwidth.
stefan_··on Incident Report: May 19, 2026 – GCP Account Suspension
It's reassuring to know they will ban a million dollar enterprise customer just like they will ban your GMail of 20 years.
stefan_··on Google changes its search box
What scares me are the basic usability fails it still has. Search for a few foreign language words and it will come back with paragraphs upon paragraphs of AI output in that foreign language despite me telling Google in 15 different ways that I don't speak it, nor anything else on the Google page being in that language. How are all their products always made by and for the most narrow minded people on this planet.
stefan_··on Linux security mailing list 'almost unmanageable'
This is just nonsensical changes and slurs, but particularly degenerate input data can cause big issues in training:

stefan_··on Meta deletes popular 1M follower account after Kuwaiti request
They also shipped 0 barrels of oil last month, the basis for 90% of gov revenue, 50% of its GDP. Clearly their faux workforce of subsidized "natives" and "indentured servants" is heading for a fulminant blowup, with no one in charge with the faintest clue towards mitigation.

So now there's no power, no money. Hence the attempts at message control. I don't think it's for Meta to soften their fall.

stefan_··on I don't think AI will make your processes go faster
The idea that PM tickets are now much improved because they paste their unbaked wrong "idea of what the ticket is" into ChatGPT to expand into a 500 word behemoth is hilarious.

At least when the PM still wrote it you could outright tell it was bullshit and made no sense. Now that is just obfuscated.

stefan_··on The Zulip Foundation
Wait, don't they know that the best way for your newly corporate orphaned quasi-source project to flourish is to donate it to the Apache Software Foundation?
stefan_··on Amazon workers under pressure to up their AI usage are making up tasks
Right, the leaderboard is internal.
stefan_··on Removing the modem and GPS from my 2024 RAV4 hybrid
The data on the OBD2 port is legally mandated, so can't be encrypted. But besides encryption CAN buses in a car are also separated, the bus on the OBD2 plug often can't even talk to the most interesting components.
stefan_··on Anthropic forms $200M partnership with the Gates Foundation
Have you worked in a big company before? I swear they were announcing random partnerships and MoUs every week. They never went anywhere except fancy dinners for the executives involved. Sometimes they were literally announcing partnerships with essentially competitors, because apparently executives on both sides were too stupid to understand their own business.

The worst were the ones where long after all the cocktails were drunk, some executive (too stupid to understand the vapid nature of these partnerships) got it into his mind to "check up on the progress of the cooperation". That mess predictably rolled downhill because nobody was willing to tell them the truth.

stefan_··on Googlebook
If it's not a new thing you can't be promoted for it. Rest assured theres still a Chromebook, Pixelbook and Googlebook team each.
stefan_··on Louis Rossmann offers to pay legal fees for a threatened OrcaSlicer developer
I mean, that's sort of all it is, some dude ranting on his YouTube channel. Often "reacting" to some other dudes rant. Closely related to the format of a bunch of bros "podcasting".
stefan_··on "Dirty Frag" (CVE-2026-43284): The Second Linux Root Exploit in Eight Days
Slop blogspam summary. Even before everyone lost their mind to Mythos and other IPO bait, local privilege escalations in Linux were a dime a dozen (not always as universally exploitable, but plenty).
stefan_··on America's carpet capital: an empire and its toxic legacy
It's a bit like asking about the health risks of sodium chloride
stefan_··on Appearing productive in the workplace
There was a time when also Claude would absolutely fill code with emojis, which is why now their system prompt has

> Claude does not use emojis unless the person in the conversation asks it to

stefan_··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
I also liked the bot posting screenshot diffs that are all false positives, while apparently not capturing the default change (is it not in some menu somewhere?)
stefan_··on DeepSeek V4 – almost on the frontier
And before that they summarized it. But yeah, thinking was always like that (when it first started, it almost just seemed like a scheme to massively increase token use..)
stefan_··on Apple accidentally left Claude.md files Apple Support app
Okay, but why is the Siri team sitting out transformers. I really wanna move past the „Dragon Naturally Speaking“ experience with a bolted on decision tree.
stefan_··on HERMES.md in commit messages causes requests to route to extra usage billing
Hermes is one of these OpenClaw clones, so this was certainly intentional, not a model hallucinating something.

I think the problem is clear. Anthropic saw their usage go up much more than their capacity could handle. There are a few tried and true solutions to this, like "increase the price" or "restrict signups so you can guarantee service to what you have already sold".

Then there is the "large scale fraud" option, where you materially change and degrade the service you have already sold. Just because you have obfuscated and mislead in how you describe the product you are selling doesn't mean you get to capture the cash flow of 1 year subscriptions then not honor that contract for the full duration.
