> Even today the brick and mortar stores of multi-million (billion) dollar companies have dirty bathrooms and broken lights.

Last place I worked at (10M investment) the men's pisser didn't flush and the toilet paper was brown sandpaper that smelt like shit even before you used it. Horrible TL lights though, so not quite a horror scene.

stef25··on A $1k AWS mistake
> Does Amazon refund you for mistakes

Hard no. Had to pay I think 100$ for premium support to find that out.

stef25··on A $1k AWS mistake
Made a similar mistake like this once. While just playing around to see what's possible I upload some data to the AWS algo that will recommended products to your users based on everyone's previous purchases.

I uploaded a small xls with uid and prodid columns and then kind of forgot about it.

A few months later I get a note from bank saying your account is overdrawn. The account is only used for freelancing work which I wasn't doing at the time, so I never checked that account.

Looks like AWS was charging me over 1K / month while the algo continuously worked on that bit of data that was uploaded one time. They charged until there was no money left.

That was about 5K in weekend earnings gone. Several months worth of salary in my main job. That was a lot of money for me.

Few times I've felt so horrible.

People expect to see their past orders, save their address, keep a shopping cart, a list of favorites etc.

If you don't want your data online then don't put it there.

stef25··on Our investigation into the suspicious pressure on Archive.today
Isn't it just a question of pretending to be a search bot ? Sites will allow google bot to bypass the paywall so stuff gets indexed.

France possibly found a way to pressure Durov into cooperating. Preempting similar actions by Russia. Classic intelligence methods to get someone to come over to the other side.

Perhaps the DGSE also got to plug a cable in to the Telegram infrastructure, which would be huge plus for them and the west in general not in the least because of the war. You could say France has pwnd Durov.

If I'm not mistaken some significant arrest was made shortly after they captured Durov, in the case of this child exploitation stuff.

Why would Kraken just accept 100K worth of Monero coming in and sent out as fiat to a bank account ?

Trading privacy coins is set to banned in the EU as from 2027. Not sure how easy it will be to circumvent this rule.

stef25··on Fighting the New York Times' invasion of user privacy
> Why does OpenAI collect and retain for 30 days^1 chats that the user wants to be deleted

When working on an e-commerce gig we would get "delete my data" requests from customers, which we're legally obliged to comply with. A script would delete everything we could from the DB immediately. Since we had 30 day backups, their data would only be deleted from the backups on day 31. I think this was acceptable to the GDPR consultant.

Going in to the backups to delete their data there in insane.

stef25··on DOJ seizes $15B in Bitcoin from 'pig butchering' scam based in Cambodia
After having read the thread it's not clear to me where the "3 years" comes from ?

EDIT and were the keys cracked, or were the passphrases obtained ? It's mentioned elsewhere that he had them written down. Which would be a much easier "hack"

stef25··on Peter Thiel's antichrist lectures reveal more about him than Armageddon
He comes across as someone who's been alone with his thoughts unchallenged for way too long. Really bad look, wasn't expecting this.
stef25··on Find Nearby Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR)
Here in Belgium the contract for these cameras on highways was given to a family run business who charged nothing at all for the hardware and installation in exchange for a decent cut of every fine that's issues with them. They're financially very healthy.
stef25··on Find Nearby Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR)
It's full of ANPR camera's here (BE) what are you talking about ?

They are used on highways to monitor average speed and in cities to check that no "illegal" cars enter the city. Illegal being ones that don't comply with euronorms anymore.

> I am interested in creating my own number plate reader to scratch an itch

Check out OpenALPR. Tested it out on some traffic footage in my region, pretty much nailed them all including the make and model of the car.

> We'd rather live a full life doing what we want vs the inverse

Except these people have families that care about them, you could even say kids need a parent in their life.

The day Honnold falls to his death the world will applaud all his achievements but his kid probably wish his dad never climbed at all.

The day I became a father is the day I stopped riding a motorbike.

stef25··on Digital vassals? French Government ‘exposes citizens’ data to US'
This addiction to Microsoft is everywhere and it's terrible for everyone involved. So many small orgs and NGOs paying through the nose for what can be done for free with Google Docs & Sheets.
stef25··on Digital vassals? French Government ‘exposes citizens’ data to US'
This site has a heavy pro Russian bias, see for example https://brusselssignal.eu/2025/07/europe-still-has-the-power...

Turns out it was founded by an American, who was arrested on suspicion of bias-motivated crimes, second-degree assault and harassment after attacking a reporter in the USA but currently living in Hungary and running some media org there, with ties to the right wing Fidesz party. And he is on paper as being the founded of brusselssignal.eu

His organization received a big loan from an undisclosed source to set up the Brussels organisation and it seems to made up of or advised by a rag tag of European right wing politicians.

The whole thing stinks of Russian meddling in Europe.

> Look at Venice, for example.

No patience for these complaints. Either you want tourist money or you don't. Seems like half the city lives off it and the other half hates it. That's an internal problem.

Same in Barcelona.

stef25··on Myanmar’s proliferating scam centers
They've been cooking up heroin and meth in vast quantities for decades, that's surely a big contributing factor.
stef25··on The North Korean fake IT worker problem is ubiquitous
Where I am in Europe you couldn't even get a (legal!) job in a bar without showing proper ID, and having your identification (id card number) checked and be present in the contract.

The fact that "fake people" can be employed for high level IT companies in the US is just unfathomable to me.
