steelbrain··on Ask HN: Side project of more than $2k monthly revenue? what's your project?
Some really interesting projects here! I've been working on my own SaaS project called CorOpera (https://www.coropera.com) for almost a year now. It's a cap table management solution for early-stage startups, helping them manage their cap table, do some bookkeeping, stay legally compliant, and potentially retain employees by offering them stock options. While not quite at the $2k/month mark yet, we're steadily approaching it.

I have an engineering background so breaking into the marketing and sales domain has been quite a journey. It's been a roller coaster of ups and downs, but I remain hopeful.

One of the things I've enjoyed most about building your own thing is just talking to other founders and learning about their experiences. While the dataset has not been large enough to make quantity compensate for quality, I've still learned quite a bit.

It's been fascinating to read about everyone's side projects, and I'm curious to know if any other founders here have faced challenges with fundraising bookkeeping or cap table in general. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

steelbrain··on Workarise – Simplify Your Project Management and Communication
Congratulations on the launch of your product! Here's a bit of early user feedback:

I navigated to your website by clicking on the HackerNews link but couldn't go back after doing so. The website seems to hijack the back button (intentionally or otherwise). This is a dark pattern that's becoming increasingly common in my experience. Can you please address this?

steelbrain··on Crab crisis in Bering Sea a sign of ‘borealization’
I had to re-read several paragraphs to make sure my eyes weren't failing me. It seems either AI generated or needlessly extended, to the point where reading has become a chore. I gave up halfway through without understanding much of *how* they are able to return if the fisheries are still closed.
steelbrain··on $22B project to provide 8% of UK energy via undersea cable from North Africa
I am uneducated in this particular field but my understanding is that salt water is extremely corrosive. Having reliable energy is not just about installation, but also about maintenance and continued operation. The latter is a challenge in a corrosive salt water environment.
steelbrain··on Ask HN: Are alternative (oil, nu, etc.) shells usable as daily drivers?
Anecdote: I started with oh my zsh and moved over to prezto. One thing that immediately struck me with prezto is just how fast it was. The shell boot up was instant, I don't know what oh my zsh was doing but it would take a while before it became interactive.

I didn't care enough to dig deep into the why, but have happily been stuck on prezto for the last few years.

steelbrain··on Cylindrical aquarium housing 1,500 exotic fish bursts in Berlin
This is tangent from the topic at hand but I'm curious to pick your brain. Why is it a dumb idea to send people to Mars?
steelbrain··on Forgejo – Launching a Fork of Gitea
Not to dismiss your comment but you appear entitled through comments like

> Gitea should work with Woodpecker for closer integration, not build one by itself.

> Codeberg uses it for their public CI/CD

Why should anyone care/use CI/CD software because Codeberg uses it? I didn't even know this company existed until just now. Isn't it rude to act entitled and act companies to bend to your will? You speak negatively of Gitea, highlighting a fork because they were working on a CI, but recommend Woodpecker which itself is a fork of Drone CI. What's your line of thinking here?

steelbrain··on New Firefox privacy feature strips URLs of tracking parameters
For people who want this feature but do not want to turn on internal flags, or are using a different browser, there's an extension that does this job.

ClearURLs Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/clearurls/

ClearURLs Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/clearurls/lckanjgm...

The Firefox extension is also marked as a recommended extension, so presumably has gone through some policy scrutiny, if Mozilla docs are anything to go by: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-on-badges

steelbrain··on When Samsung closed the Android tablet gap, Apple widens it again with iPadOS 16
What an awful cookies prompt, by law they are required to make required only and their preferred amount of cookies equally easy to choose. They don’t.

There’s simply no single option to choose required cookies only.

steelbrain··on Ask HN: Pros and cons of V8 isolates?
This is intentional IIRC. Node is a Javascript runtime, has competitors like Deno with very different APIs. Cloudflare has gone the route of being as close to the ES spec as possible instead of committing to any specific runtime APIs.

For the case at hand, It doesn’t support buffer APIs but supports ArrayBuffers, so you can build on top of it. You can use any off the shelf browserify/buffer shim package to work it around.

steelbrain··on ‘Click to Cancel’ legislation introduced in Pennsylvania
I don't know how it works in other countries but most bigger gyms in Estonia make you sign a contract with them when you join.

If you stop paying without cancelling the contract (which they have ridiculous terms around), they sell you off to a collection agency which then proceeds to harass you until you pay. A friend recently went through this experience and warned anyone against the big-name gyms. (Looking at you myFitness)

steelbrain··on iCloud+ custom email domains should be better
I moved my emails to iCloud plus email domains less than a month ago. The import of existing emails was excruciatingly slow. I mean, 1 email per second on average, then failing with some random error halfway down the line (120k emails), even on retries, causing your migration agent to give up.

I spent the better half of a week trying to get it to work, ended up moving to Google Workspace instead.

I think you may be comparing Apples to Oranges here. Battery is to a Tesla what Engine is to a ICE Honda. Try asking Honda Dealership to fix a non Honda Engine that's started acting out.
steelbrain··on Skillsoft Buys Codecademy for $525M
Congratulations Zack! I learned to program at Codecademy and it has played a very important role in my life/career. I'm working as an Engineer in an ed-tech company. This was all enabled by you and your team!

Thanks again

steelbrain··on Show HN: Pony – a messenger for mindful correspondence
Thanks for working on this. It reminds me of a social app called Slowly (https://slowly.app/en/) where you write "letters" to people and they are delivered based on the approximate physical distance between them.

It's common for letters across countries to take >12 or sometimes even >24 hours. It's led people to a lot of meaningful relationships/friendships, they publish some as stories: https://slowly.app/en/story/featured/

steelbrain··on Binance just transferred 6B Tethers to an unknown address
> probably not since they control the blockchain and they can fork it to undo the transaction

Do you have anything to back that claim up? I don't understand, since the whole fuss behind decentralized cryptos is that they are, you know, decentralized.

steelbrain··on Reactive Clojure: A web language
LoC != Complexity. React has one job, and it does it really well, part of that 350k lines of code is a LOT of tests. Just because it has those tests doesn’t mean it’s “much more complex”.

My two cents :)

steelbrain··on Turn your Android phone into SMS API gateway
> Reminds me of an old glitch I experienced in the early Nokias that allowed the receiver of a call to listen-in on the line before answering.

Do you happen to remember the model of that Nokia? I had a guy in high school show this to me once, but nobody believed me when I told them! I knew I wasn't crazy haha

steelbrain··on Hasura GraphQL Engine and SQL Server
Security through obscurity is only sweeping the problem under the rug instead of addressing it IMPO. I don't know what Parler is or was, but I don't think sequential int IDs would be the major factor that would lead to a website being scraped.

There are generally two types of information in applications, "public" and "privileged". The former has the IDs and such discoverable by an index or explore page, the latter requires authentication and has user-specific permissions.

For both cases, if hiding IDs is the only access control on the backend, it's fundamentally flawed. For both cases, if the access control is implemented well (in addition to rate limiting), integer vs UUIDs don't make a difference.

What do you think?

steelbrain··on Hasura GraphQL Engine and SQL Server
I don't have an answer for you but you do have my curiosity. Why did you choose UUIDs as primary keys?

steelbrain··on Android 12 will let alternative app stores update apps automatically
It's a double edged sword. Either the scenario you described (less likely IMO) or our grandmas are stuck with outdated Applications with known vulnerabilities for years because they don't go into App Stores and update manually.
