std_throwaway··on Intel Issues Updates to Protect Systems from Security Exploits
They made the wood fire retardand but it still burns - just not as easily as untreated wood - while selling it as fireproof wood.
std_throwaway··on Intel Issues Updates to Protect Systems from Security Exploits
Does this mean it was deliberately designed to be insecure to gain some performance?

With each day passing this looks more and more like the Diesel scandal. Is it OK if all big players do it?

std_throwaway··on CPU hardware vulnerable to side-channel attacks
As far as I remember, both. It was only slowly executing x86 code and the compilers didn't deliver what was expected. It was a gamble on non-matured technology. They didn't fail completely, though, HP was selling systems using Itanium processors for a long time.
std_throwaway··on CPU hardware vulnerable to side-channel attacks
The compiler only knows about the program and maybe statistical information about the data.

The CPU knows about the actual data currently being processed.

Therefore, the CPU can do more by using branch prediction and speculative execution. It is more expensive in terms of energy per computation but so far it was worth it. The CPU can also optimize old code on-the-fly.

std_throwaway··on Teenagers are growing more anxious and depressed
> In the adult world it's not like your mom can call your boss and complain about the fact that you got a bad review or something (at least not successfully...).

Don't be so sure about that. Parents are starting to talk to university professors on behalf of their adult children.

std_throwaway··on Useless design features in modern products
You can accurately adjust a rotating knob without looking. They have real benefits that you can't replace with software.

What advantage do I, as a lowly user, have from the ME?
std_throwaway··on The Corrosion of High School Debate
Who or what is a "Jesus Christ? How do you determine that something or somebody is a "Jesus Christ"?

What does "return to Earth" mean? Does it mean physically in a human body or is mentally felt by his followers enough?

Define "soon".

The statement "Fourty years of exposure to Flouride in the drinking water will turn our children into communists." is much better defined except for the "communists" part. But we could define a "communist test". If the children exposed to forty years of Fluoride in the drinking water fail pass the "communist" test it is clearly false.

Still, within the short time of the debate you won't find any meaningful answer to these questions thus limiting their utility severely.

std_throwaway··on The Corrosion of High School Debate
God told me so in a dream. Isn't that enough?

Maybe we better need some logic and work our way towards a solution. Having a solid base with well tested theories is a good start. It won't ever be fully bulletproof, sure. There is only one final way to find out. Try it. Maybe we should choose a plan that doesn't involve creating a better world only in the so-called "afterlife".

std_throwaway··on The Corrosion of High School Debate
An argument invoking an statement that is not falsifiable is immediately invalid. At least in sane societies, so help us God!

EDIT: correction of "unprovable" to "not falsifiable"

std_throwaway··on Intel Coffee Lake Core i7-8700K review
Edit: The title was edited and "The best gaming CPU you can buy." was removed. Smart move.
std_throwaway··on Microsoft gives up on Windows 10 Mobile
That move was likely political. Half the leaders internally wanted to let it die but to shift blame they let "the other team" launch it anyways to let it fail and say "told you so".
std_throwaway··on Intel Coffee Lake Core i7-8700K review
More accurately: The best gaming CPU you can't buy.
std_throwaway··on RawTherapee 5.3 – Photo software
To me it seems that Lightroom makes it much easier for users to get a decent quality due to a much better polished user interface and sane presets. You should be able to obtain the same quality with both programs but it takes oh-so-much work to get gradients, color, detail, denoise into the right balance.
std_throwaway··on RawTherapee 5.3 – Photo software
I've tried both a for some time and stuck with Darktable.

* RawTherapee runs on Windows since years.

* Darktable just started the Windows port.

* RawTherapee seems to provide more functions.

* Darktable seems to be better integrated and polished.

* RawTherapee was a bit easier to get into.

* Darktable has a better workflow if you're into it.

* Darktable also seems to be more "stable" in the sense that not everything changes meaning all the time and most things work like expected.

In the end, the workflow was the deciding factor for me. It just felt way better and more efficient. Technologically they are different. RawTherapee should have more potential once they manage to clean up the user interface.

It's quite the opposite of a backdoor. It's "locking" their own backdoor that probably stands wide open on everbody elses house.
std_throwaway··on Redefine statistical significance

std_throwaway··on Raddit: An open source alternative to Reddit
Voat used to be a "best of Reddit" reposting page with some spicy free speech here and there. Now it seems to be an echo cabinet for the so-called alt-right with the same sermon reposted all day every day.

Isn't SQLite an application calling for a clean implementation in Rust?
std_throwaway··on Wind Energy Is One of the Cheapest, and It's Getting Cheaper
Wind must blow in order to extract energy from it. Therefore, we will never slow down wind to zero with windmills. Also we already have mountains changing weather patterns. Sure, the weather patterns will change at some point as windmills grow to mountain size but in this case we will notice it way before it goes out of hand. In an emergency situation we can bring the windmills down at free fall speed with some thermate and gasoline.

std_throwaway··on The Huge Premium Intel Is Charging for Skylake Xeons
Q: Why is Intel charging so much?

A: Because enough people pay.

Q: Why do people pay so much? Why do they pay a high premium for top performance?

A: Because, considering all factors, it's worth that much for them. For many it's too much but for many others it's ok.

Q: But it's the same silicon!

A: Manufacturing cost plays little role when the price is not dictated by a race to the bottom between different manufactures. Instead, marketing, market segmentation and customer value are the cost determining factors.

std_throwaway··on SanDisk crams 400GB into a microSD card
You could possibly connect them all with through holes or very thin PCBs. No need for a library or a full reader.
std_throwaway··on SanDisk crams 400GB into a microSD card
You are right. My math was off!
std_throwaway··on SanDisk crams 400GB into a microSD card
Your 10TB HDDs have a density of only 2.56e16 bits/m³ which is far inferior to microSD cards.

PS: Your lack of faith disturbs me.

std_throwaway··on SanDisk crams 400GB into a microSD card
Card volume: 11x15x0.7 mm³ = 1.155e-7 m³

4U-Rack volume: 450.85x(4*44.45)x800 = 64.128904e-3 m³

At 100% usable volume ratio that would be 555228 Micro-SD-Cards or 222 Petabyte and cost $55,000,000,000 (assembly and shipping not included).

The storage density of the cards is 2.77e19 bit/m³.

Assuming a saturated gigabit (100 MB/s) connection, uploading your backup would take 70.4 years.

std_throwaway··on Impact of breast milk on IQ, brain size and white matter development (2010)
Nature "learns" by trial and error while humans have the capacity to reason about things. In the long run intellect will win (although in most cases we are far far from that point).
std_throwaway··on Weird Python Integers
Summary: Integers in python are full blown objects. Small numbers are stored in a central preallocated table where each entry represents one number. Setting a variable to a small integer makes it point to an entry in that table. Multiple variables may point to the same small integer objects in that table. Fooling around with the table leads to funny results.
