std_throwaway··on Typical U.S. households don’t use most of their bandwidth
Isn't it a hen-and-egg-problem?

High quality 4K and 8K streaming isn't widely used because there are not many users. Therefore there is no evidence for demand. Therefore there isn't many providers and content. Therefore we don't really need the bandwidth to support something that doesn't exist yet. We need to wait until other markets prove that this demand exists. Then the companies who provide the solutions can take over our market. Win-Win.

std_throwaway··on Scientists Have Been Underestimating the Pace of Climate Change
Well, the sky is very likely falling but it is falling so slowly that the older generation won't see any severe effects. In the great scheme it won't matter so much what Germany does if the rest of the world continues to burn the coal. The only direct effect that deindustrializing Germany has is it will kill the German economy today.

Thanks for explaining.
std_throwaway··on Insect 'apocalypse' in U.S. driven by 50x increase in toxic pesticides: study
So, if I go bankrupt it's basically worth nothing to anybody else because nobody could sell it for money? Even if it gets taken away and somebody else owns my shares they couldn't do anything with it when the board disagrees? Even if the state takes those shares and tries to force a selloff?

Can I sell this land to someone else if I need money? Is the use of that land for the new owner restricted or can it be repurposed for agriculture or other uses?

std_throwaway··on The Best Financial Advice I Ever Got
* Stop paying so much taxes.

* Use money to make money.

* Never get sick.

* Never get divorced.

std_throwaway··on The Best Financial Advice I Ever Got
This advice is 50% wrong. You should marry very rich or never get a divorce. For many people marriage works very well as they will tell you proudly.

On the other hand this advice is 50% right if you ever do get a divorce. Those things are so expensive and leave a huge hole behind. If you were the primary money earner you are likely to pay for years.

std_throwaway··on The Best Financial Advice I Ever Got
50% chance of being totally destroyed financially. But it surely doesn't hit you because you are special.

Trade secret. Sorry, can't say any more.

The point is that we don't know and we cannot check.
std_throwaway··on Committed emissions from existing energy infrastructure jeopardize 1.5 °C target
Having control over the energy source gives you a lot of power. It doesn't make sense to give up all that power right now. We have to wait until holding on to this power is more expensive than letting it go and this can take a long long time.
std_throwaway··on Committed emissions from existing energy infrastructure jeopardize 1.5 °C target
You don't even need storage solutions if you keep sufficient gas/coal on standby. But somebody must pay for these because they don't get many hours of use.

There's lots of faulty reasoning going around society:

* There is no climate change.

* The temperature charts are rigged.

* Scientists conspire to get more funding.

* Dissenting opinions are suppressed by the mainstream.

* Taxing CO2 is a way to control the economy and stifle growth.

* CO2 is actually good for plants.

* CO2 does not cause climate change.

* If there is climate change, CO2 is only a minor contributor.

* Humans do not cause CO2, nature does that.

* Climate change is not caused by humans.

* Climate change is not bad.

* If it is bad, there is nothing we can do.

* It's only bad for other people.

* It will only hit us hard in the far future.

* We cannot make compromises in our lifestyle or risk our economy.

* We have invested much too much in fossil fuel technology to give it up.

* Renewable energy is not feasible. It's a joke. Don't even think about it.

* Solar cells cost more energy than they produce.

* Batteries produce lots of CO2 during production.

* Windmills will never harvest the energy that was needed to produce them.

* Our electric grid will fail if we add too much renewable energy.

* We cannot store enough electric energy.

* Renewables can never work because they cannot produce energy on demand.

* Even if renewables were feasible they would be too expensive.

* Why don't we just build more nuclear plants?

* Thorium will save us in time, so no hurry.

* Fusion is only 30 years away, so why invest in renewables?

... this is only what came into my mind spontaneously and some points are really hard to argue, especially with non-technical people who do not see scientific facts as something solid but something that can be negotiated.

It's kind of the same reasoning why voting machines are closed source and can only be audited by authorized personnel.
std_throwaway··on Pesticides Could Be Making People Fat
> 1. The only thing making you fat is excess calories - it cannot be any other way.

So, why do you consume so much? Who calls for more and more calories? Why do you get hungry all the time? Why do you not get the needed nutrients from the food you eat? What destroyed the function of your digestive system? Why is your microbiome so different from a healthy person?

std_throwaway··on Intel 10nm Chip Gets Mixed Reviews
So, Intel produced new APUs for low-end/middle class laptops. Great, if that's what they were aiming for.
std_throwaway··on Intel 10nm Chip Gets Mixed Reviews
This sounds very promising. But it also sounds like something that PR would write. I think we'll have to wait some time until independent researchers get their hands on these chips and give them a thorough testing.
std_throwaway··on Intel 10nm Chip Gets Mixed Reviews
Those aren't 10nm Xeons.
std_throwaway··on Intel 10nm Chip Gets Mixed Reviews
Some "hardware patches" are microcode changes that also result in performance degradation.
std_throwaway··on Intel 10nm Chip Gets Mixed Reviews
Have these tests been run with or without the security patches? Since Spectre/Meltdown/etc. it has increasingly been difficult to compare numbers. Lately intels IPC advantage compared to AMD has been melted away completely by these patches. It will probably take some time until we can judge if these new IPC gains are solid or if they have been bought with new compromises.

EDIT: To clarify: If you compare both "out of the box" then the old one would be unsafe while the new one hopefully is safe because it comes with hardware/firmware patches built in. If you compare both patched, the old architecture gets a large performance hit compared to when it was launched. With time the patches usually evolve and change the performance characteristic. So you have to be careful which OS or firmware revision you are using. However way you do it, it's not an easy apples-to-apples comparison anymore unless you're talking about a very specific use case at a very specific point in time.

std_throwaway··on Dow plunges more than 950 points after China devalues its currency
Stock valuation is not money. You get money if you sell. The stock is a virtual valuation. You need to sell to make it real. You only lost imagined money.
std_throwaway··on Dow plunges more than 950 points after China devalues its currency
750 points sounded much scarier when the DOW was below 10000. Now it's just 3%.
std_throwaway··on What Microsoft’s revival can teach other tech companies
Yes, there's basically no integrity. Only the appearance of it. A company isn't this way or that way they just do whatever is most promising in that moment.

std_throwaway··on The Roots of Boeing’s 737 Max Crisis: A Regulator Relaxes Its Oversight
It goes deeper all the way to the value systems that once were bestowed upon the populace by the church.
std_throwaway··on The Roots of Boeing’s 737 Max Crisis: A Regulator Relaxes Its Oversight
> In the middle of the Max’s development, two of the most seasoned engineers in the F.A.A.’s Boeing office left.

> In their place, the F.A.A. appointed an engineer who had little experience in flight controls, and a new hire who had gotten his master’s degree three years earlier.

This is how you grow an army of YES-men without any substantial backbone. The type that makes good middle managers and keeps the process moving smoothly. Unfortunately for these engineers, they might ultimately be responsible for the system they signed off on.
