staticautomatic··on Photographer built a medium-format rangefinder
I can't speak for the Mamiya Press but the Zeiss Planar 80mm f/2.8 for the Graflex XL is rad.
staticautomatic··on When did the job market get so rude?
I did expect there to be more strong applicants, but that hardly means I expect "perfect" applicants or "cream of the crop for nothing." With one role, for example, there are basically unqualified people, and qualified people who won't accept the top of our range (~$120K).
staticautomatic··on When did the job market get so rude?
I have multiple open roles right now and am finding that I can’t afford to hire the top applicants. I honestly did not expect to have so little leverage.

staticautomatic··on Is America's jobs market nearing a cliff?
Just dropping by to say how much I passionately hate documentation that uses fib() as an example.
staticautomatic··on Don't push AI down our throats
Well, it would probably need to be part of a physical product and not software alone unless the vendor is dumb and forgot to disclaim the warranty (see https://repository.law.uic.edu/jitpl/vol16/iss2/6/).

Second, it’s not exactly about whether the change constitutes a drop in quality but whether it renders the product unfit for its ordinary purpose. The argument would essentially be that the change is a deliberately introduced defect.

It’s a little weird but a plausible claim given the right facts.

As a lawyer I think this could potentially be litigated as a breach of the implied warranty of merchantability.
staticautomatic··on A modern 35mm film scanner for home
I wonder how this compares to Technical Pan, which I imagine it was modeled after.
staticautomatic··on Hiring a developer as a small indie studio in 2025
Eh, kind of. Right now I'm hiring for a role where nobody remaining in my applicant pool is qualified (all have only some of the experience I need) but I'm probably still going to hire one of them. Does that "qualify" them? No. It just means I'm probably going to hire despite it.

staticautomatic··on I Want You to Understand Chicago
That has never worked well in America.
staticautomatic··on AI Broke Interviews
Rather than trying to trip up the LLM I find it’s much easier to ask about something esoteric that the LLM would know but a normal person wouldn’t.
staticautomatic··on How OpenAI uses complex and circular deals to fuel its multibillion-dollar rise
I sell you a cat for $1B and you sell me a dog for $1B and now we’re both billionaires! Whether the capital markets “want” that or not it’s still silly.

This has got to be the weirdest litigation strategy I’ve ever seen.
staticautomatic··on Society will accept a death caused by a robotaxi, Waymo co-CEO says
This is basically the opposite of how juror psychology works. Jurors in these cases tend to vote against defendants they identify with because they prefer to believe they’d never act like the defendant. Source: I’m a former jury consultant who researched and consulted on these kinds of cases.

You mean you never stay in a CC session long enough to even see the auto compaction warning?
staticautomatic··on California needs to learn from Houston and Dallas about homelessness
You mean like the million dollar McMansions on the same block as a gas station, across the street from an office high rise? I think you’re over-estimating the effect of land prices.
staticautomatic··on When the job search becomes impossible
In theory, sure, but in reality, please god no. 99% of LinkedIn messages you get as a hiring manager are “Hi I applied to your role”, “Hi I applied to your role and I’d be a great fit when can we talk?”, “Hi I’m really interested in learning about your work can we meet for coffee?”, or “Hi I’d be a great fit for your role because <insert enormous AI-written cover letter>.”
staticautomatic··on When the job search becomes impossible
The AI-written cover letters are a dead giveaway and you can often spot them in less than 10 seconds easy, but it’s still a terrible slog.

If you don’t believe me, try clustering 1,000 cover letters.

staticautomatic··on AI coding made me faster, but I can't code to music anymore
I’m building a moderately complex system with FastAPI + PG + Prefect executing stuff on Cloud Run, and so long as I invest in getting the architecture and specs right, it’s really a dream how much of the heavy lifting and grunt work I can leave to Claude Code. And thank god I don’t have to manage Alembic by myself.

staticautomatic··on ChatGPT Will Apologize for Anything
There's nothing new here but it's definitely hilarious.
staticautomatic··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting ceasing operations
Basically, you donate to a PBS member station, and the station uses at least some portion your money to pay PBS dues.
staticautomatic··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting ceasing operations
PBS doesn’t make PBS content either. They acquire it from people who make it using CPB money, among others. Then the stations that don’t make the content license it from PBS, mainly using CPB money. And they use it to attract members/donors.

You’ve framed this as if the disappearance of CPB and its money is basically a big nothing-burger, which is extremely far from the truth.

Source: I work in the system at a level with visibility into these things.

Disney is a good one to bet on. They basically have the most sophisticated IP lawyering team in world history.
staticautomatic··on Ask HN: I want to leave tech: what do I do?
Meta seems like it's definitely worse than the others now, though, since you're liable to be explicitly labeled a "low performer" if you get laid off.
