statenjason··on Ask HN: Please Review My New Social Music Website
Clicking the "Browse" link takes me to "Browse Random Files". First, I don't believe that the uploaded songs should be thought of as "files." People want music, tunes, and tracks. "Files" almost makes me weary of having to download something. Second, there needs to be some structure to browsing - by artist, genre, year, popularity, etc. Presenting a person with a few random tracks when your database has 1000s of them makes it difficult for users to find anything specific.

On profiles, the url pattern needs some work. You mention in your blog that you would like bands to say "check us out on Tune To Us." However, if they're uploading their songs and want people to hit their profile they'd have to say, "Check us out at Tune To Us slash profile slash view slash 2934." Perhaps adjusting to something shorter with more significance. A band/user should be more than just a number.

I believe your site's has potential, but it also needs some work to make it useful to the masses. Good luck with it. I'll keep an eye on where it goes.

Claiming to be "leading" when you just entered the competition? You're still in beta. Speaking of being in beta, you should probably mention that on your registration and/or terms of service. Also, incentives to sign up during this period could be a good thing.

They should promote them as stackable too. Imagine these developer cubes filling a warehouse.

After reading, my mind was drawn to road signs which share the same principle. Seeing a sign with a picture of two people standing awkwardly would not put "crosswalk" into my mind. Also, I notice that the color of a sign itself is significant. The red X in the corner of my browser shows color plays a role here too.
statenjason··on Cable Cost are going High
The interface of cable TV is what makes me shy away from it. I've been bothered with it for years for several reasons.

First, how long does it take to find something you actually want to watch? I've seen many instances of flipping through a set of ~100 channels in search of something interesting. However, with frequent ads and no indication of what is on any given channel, it's easy to miss something worthwhile.

Second, channel numbers hold no significance. Channel #Z means station Y only through company X in region V. Figuring out the layout when I'm away from home is not worth my time.

Third, the provided "cable boxes" you can fork out extra money for each month are a poor excuse to improve the cable tv experience. Yes, they show what's on each channel, but paging only ten out of hundreds (including those you don't receive). What about a decent search feature? Some have a search, but input with a standard remote is awful. Include something with a QWERTY. Finally, they're slow. Waiting multiple seconds for every action should not be a common occurrence in this decade.

When the average Joe starts realizing these issues they've put up with for years, I have no doubt they'll follow the techies.
