There is another possible reason. Germany has retained a large cash economy mainly due to privacy concerns. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-02-06/germany-i...
starbeast··on De-facto closed source: the case for understandable software
>The PC software world did run for quite a few years on the model of predominantly commercial/proprietary software, most of it being closed-source, so it's not like it is some far-fetched idea that doesn't work in economic terms.

And now Microsoft uses linux on the majority of their own cloud offerings. Open source beats propriety software on economic terms a lot of the time. It doesn't matter that both can work in economic terms, it matters which one is better in economic terms.

If the fbx loads into Unity fine, are you not using a left handed system, or are you flipping it on export?

edit - I'm an idiot, Unity does its own conversion to left handed on import.

As far as I know, it is legal to ride a horse drunk (as long as the horse is sober) in some places. Montana has even put a horse picking up a drunk from a bar in one of the adverts against drink driving. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnYtY9wfvvc

Over a long enough timeline, all popular science magazines eventually turn into 'BBC Focus'.

Hi from the UK, where I am currently getting a little tired of having to explain the difference between ochlocracy and democracy(1) to people who keep insisting that 52% is 'the will of the people' and that to not immediately fall in line behind that 52% is to be a traitor to the country and an enemy of democracy itself.

(1)The 'demos' being all the people and the 'ochlos' being the mob.

Well I hope, if nothing else, that the experience has turned you into a Johnny Cash fan.

That is still a relatively accessible temperature, given that liquid nitrogen is about the same price as clean water.

Off the top of my head, I could think of one use, which would be to trigger a transistor to switch on and off some high power superconducting circuit when the small bit of superconductor gets cold enough to start superconducting.

starbeast··on Satoshi Nakamoto made a post after years of silence?
Alternatively, the Urban Dictionary defines 'nour' as a very attractive and funny girl.

I find the Satoshi puzzle to be far more interesting than bitcoin itself. The level of operational security Satoshi has achieved is incredible - 'The wise one who lives in the middle' has proven to be a good choice of name. All things considered, I would not be at all surprised if Satoshi turns out to be a small team inside GCHQ, or somewhere similar.

I guess it doesn't have to go quite that low, depending on what you make it out of.

Though you have got me wondering whether anyone has put a crumb of high temp superconductor in a smd resistor package yet and if so, for what purpose.

>"Intentional Fire-Spreading by “Firehawk” Raptors in Northern Australia"

>"We document Indigenous Ecological Knowledge and non-Indigenous observations of intentional fire-spreading by the fire-foraging raptors Black Kite (Milvus migrans), Whistling Kite (Haliastur sphenurus), and Brown Falcon (Falco berigora) in tropical Australian savannas. Observers report both solo and cooperative attempts, often successful, to spread wildfires intentionally via single-occasion or repeated transport of burning sticks in talons or beaks. This behavior, often represented in sacred ceremonies, is widely known to local people in the Northern Territory, where we carried out ethno-ornithological research from 2011 to 2017; it was also reported to us from Western Australia and Queensland. Though Aboriginal rangers and others who deal with bushfires take into account the risks posed by raptors that cause controlled burns to jump across firebreaks, official skepticism about the reality of avian fire-spreading hampers effective planning for landscape management and restoration. Via ethno-ornithological workshops and controlled field experiments with land managers, our collaborative research aims to situate fire-spreading as an important factor in fire management and fire ecology. In a broader sense, better understanding of avian fire-spreading, both in Australia and, potentially, elsewhere, can contribute to theories about the evolution of tropical savannas and the origins of human fire use."

Tax the hell out of all forms of residential-property-as-investment. Allow tax breaks on second properties if you can show you are using them and not renting them out or letting them go to seed and there should also be some exceptions for collective ownership and also stuff like homes for the elderly and other forms of sheltered care, but in general the commercial use of residential property shout be taxed to the hilt.

>A lot of the economy is driven by NGO's and that money all ends up in the pockets of the rich home, hotel and restaurant owners. Meanwhile the poor sell each other mangos and meat in the streets.

Sounds eerily similar to the situation things rapidly deteriorate from at the start of the book, which was set 60 years ago now.

starbeast··on Microsoft Wins $480M Army HoloLens Contract
Saying that the purchase is intended to increase lethality, right at the top of the report, might make me suspect that the army aren't buying these to investigate the great strides they can accomplish in repairing municipal infrastructure.

Though it will admittedly make plenty of jobs for the people that do.

They should be very careful with the naming. Something tells me that 'Windows For Helmets' may not inspire morale.

This effort, especially PowerPoint, may have saved many lives by slowing everything down a bit.

To be less blase, that list is far more pencil manufacturer than it is bomb sight manufacturer, whereas holo-lens sales to the military definitely seem bit more like a bomb sight than they do a pencil.

starbeast··on The Taming of the Screw (2000)
Could it be a bureaucratic reason where technically they have only declassified the shape, so therefore the inside could be said to still be classified and the Navy could waive it, but finds it funny to force civilians to lug the complete thing around for a while?
