starbeast··on Does Australia's access and assistance law impact 1Password?
>A lawful order by your government is not slavery.

Don't be ridiculous, slavery itself can be made lawful and actually is in some countries.

starbeast··on Does Australia's access and assistance law impact 1Password?
You have said this one way or another a few times, but I just thought I would point out that "nobody cares about this but it will ruin their chances of election to oppose it", doesn't on the face of it make a whole lot of sense.

The UK hasn't been two party for the last few elections.
starbeast··on Why I'm usually unnerved when modern SSDs die on us
Is the thorny problem of elegant vs graceful degradation. In a raid system you want something elegant but not synchronized. In a single drive, some sort of graceful degradation is usually preferable.

'Getting Started in Electronics" is the Mims book for people who are learning from scratch. His notebooks are meant more as reminders for stuff you already know.

Stephen Collins satirised this kind of 'science reporting' pretty well - https://www.wired.com/images_blogs/beyond_the_beyond/2009/07...

On a long enough timeline, all popular science magazines eventually decay into motheaten old copies of BBC Focus.

starbeast··on France might be losing its first big information war
It is a public bus with a steering wheel fitted to the back of every seat, that is sold as an improvement to the terrible oppression of having bus drivers.

edit, to be fair, I should have clarified this with 'the majority of implementations appear to be', I am not philosophically against direct democracy in principle, just most of the ways it is generally attempted.

starbeast··on Tesla's giant battery saved $40M during its first year, report says
Something like 80% of a typical lithium battery cost is drying it in an oven before sealing. Lithium cost is about 5%, possibly less. The other materials involved actually make up more of the cost than the lithium.
starbeast··on 'Dark fluid' with negative mass could dominate the universe
Oh, cool, yep. I didn't know that's what they are. I have basically been wondering if all matter is variations of those.

starbeast··on Thieves boosting signal from key fobs inside homes to steal vehicles
Statistically, you are by far the most dangerous person in your life. You are far more likely to hurt yourself than a stranger is. Should some ne'er-do-well enter your unlocked door, remind them of this and start giggling. 'We were just waiting to see who will come!', works too though.
starbeast··on 'Dark fluid' with negative mass could dominate the universe
In which case, we seem back to having two things distorting spacetime. Could mass just be the momentum of massless particles going in really small circles such that you can pack them together and call them matter?
starbeast··on Thieves boosting signal from key fobs inside homes to steal vehicles
I realised after writing it that you don't actually need to send the time itself, but it was my first 5 minute stab. Plus it is sort of fun to have the time flying about.

edit - thanks for the link, having a read through.

starbeast··on Thieves boosting signal from key fobs inside homes to steal vehicles
Lock receives signal from Key, writes down time and picks a random key and uses these to create a ciphertext, encrypts that with the public key of Key to create a second ciphertext and sends. Key receives message, decrypts with private key to first ciphertext and encrypts that with the public key of Lock and sends back. Lock decrypts message with private key and earlier random key, compares to current time and if it has taken more than a set time period does not unlock.

The clock has to be pretty fast, but you can get a secure time of flight measurement, so you can absolutely know the distance of the radio signal path.

How do you get it to not drive like a phone?
starbeast··on 'Dark fluid' with negative mass could dominate the universe
Ahh, I was getting a bit confused from photons distorting spacetime off their wavelength and plank's constant, given they also apparently have no mass. Thanks for that. I have to go and re-read a lot of stuff now though. ;)
starbeast··on 'Dark fluid' with negative mass could dominate the universe
Don't you have two things that can generate gravitational fields though? As distortions in spacetime can be caused by either mass or the momentum of massless particles, such as photons. Or do I have that wrong and photons merely follow the distortions and not cause any of their own? As presumably, you could have a negative gravitational field from a photon traveling backward in time, without having any issues with changes in inertial mass.
starbeast··on 'Dark fluid' with negative mass could dominate the universe
Presumably you could describe this as a theory of levity. For happy spacetimes.

Hey, didn't the CIA fund a hell of a lot of the 20th century's abstract art movement and help push it into the artistic mainstream by deliberately purchasing loads of it to inflate prices and make it seem a lot more popular, partly because it was much more difficult to use abstract art for understandable political statements?

starbeast··on Anthropologists Say Gladiators and Soldiers in Ancient Rome Were Vegetarian
Abstaining from meat isn't a new thing though. In many historical cultures banning meat from certain groups was enforced as an indication of status for those that were allowed.

This is suspected to be part of the reason for the neotenic expression of blond hair and blue eyes that emerged in Scandinavians, as you would normally get enough vitamin D from meat sources, so the evolutionary pressure for very fair skin is presumed to have come from the lower strata of society trying to live off grains and other vegetables while getting very little sunlight.

starbeast··on Anthropologists Say Gladiators and Soldiers in Ancient Rome Were Vegetarian
If milk or honey can be considered to be part of a vegetarian diet, then presumably unfertilised eggs can too. Roughly speaking, at least in the UK, if you don't eat dead animals you are vegetarian, and if you avoid all animal products where possible then you are vegan.

Mind you, the only people I know who have eaten human placenta all classify themselves as vegan.

starbeast··on Anthropologists Say Gladiators and Soldiers in Ancient Rome Were Vegetarian
I could have sworn that was your position. Hang on, are you three kids in a trenchcoat?
starbeast··on Anthropologists Say Gladiators and Soldiers in Ancient Rome Were Vegetarian
Not a vegetable source, but eggs are generally considered vegetarian.

For vegetable sources, they were referred to as barley-eaters and barley is 12% protein.

starbeast··on Anthropologists Say Gladiators and Soldiers in Ancient Rome Were Vegetarian
>Revisionist theories in order to support a vegetarian agenda are pretty annoying to me. A lot of it doesn't even pass a common sense sniff test.

That Plinius with his historical revisionism. Calling gladiators barley-eaters is obvious propaganda from the vegetarian lobby of ancient Rome.

starbeast··on Old coal mines can be underground food farms
Canadians have been underground farming in mines for nearly two decades now, in order to grow cannabis for the government of all things. Couldn't find any coal mines being used for this, they seem to mostly be copper. - https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:_ddjRs...
