stanac··on He went to jail for stealing someone's identity, but it was his all along
> the two men’s lives intersected briefly in the late 1980s in Albuquerque when, prosecutors said, both men were homeless

They probably didn't have much contact since he was homeless (otherwise he wouldn't be, I guess).

stanac··on Show HN: Bagels – TUI expense tracker
I am aware of those, I have used them, but this font has rounded corners on boxes, that's why I believe it is a custom font.
stanac··on Show HN: Bagels – TUI expense tracker
This TUI is really beautiful. Looking at those rounded corners I am wondering if it is using some specific font created just for TUI.
stanac··on Show HN: SudokuVariants – play and construct different variants of Sudoku
I didn't know about that one, looks neat. Thanks.

Sums of cages and selected numbers (even outside of killer/sandwich) were a must have feature for me, so I implemented those features early. Also combinations are available for single cage or multiple selected cages and for selected sandwich.

stanac··on Show HN: SudokuVariants – play and construct different variants of Sudoku
Thanks, I was matching colors of another popular Sudoku app. Ultimately it would be best to allow users to configure colors and other presentation attributes (thickness of the line, alpha, dotted/dashed, etc...).

Thank you for your kind words.
stanac··on Does current AI represent a dead end?
It speeds up code writing, it's not useless. Best use case for me is to help me understand libraries that are sparsely documented (e.g. dotnet roslyn api).

edit: spelling

stanac··on Show HN: NoSQL, but it's SQLite
I did something similar with dotnet and linq. Idea was to create something like marten but for sqlite instead of postgres. Stopped working on it some time ago, the thing that was really slow was de/serialization, but with new source generators for json maybe it can be sped up.
stanac··on Show HN: City Finding Game
thanks
stanac··on Show HN: City Finding Game
Very interesting, it would be great if where we could include/exclude continents in custom mode.
stanac··on Net 9.0 LINQ Performance Improvements
Those are linq expressions. They are indeed wonderful. You get an abstract tree from which you can create SQL or API commands to access the data source. I remember in the early days (.NET 3.5?) there were multiple examples of LINQ2X like Linq2Csv, Linq2Rss Linq2Drobox (I'm paraphrasing, I don't remember actual examples, but it was wild).

There is also relinq library which transforms linq expressions into expressions which are easier to understand/use.

stanac··on Falsehoods programmers believe about TCP
Yup, I try to explain it with shouting a message to someone in a crowded room. You can yell at your boss "I fixed the bug", they can confirm it or ignore you, which is delivery at most once if you don't repeat the message. If you try to repeat the message until they confirm it, it is at least once delivery.

edit: Point is in confirming that message is received. If you don't receive the confirmation the message was delivered at most once.

stanac··on Unity is cancelling the runtime fee for games customers
Are those overall numbers? Looking at the "this week's projects", it's 230 for godot vs 147 for unity. Which is probably more interesting detail than overall numbers.
stanac··on This month in Servo: tabbed browsing, Windows buffs, devtools, and more
It was abandoned by Mozilla but Linux Foundation took over according to Wikipedia.
stanac··on Crows are even smarter than we thought
Third one was interesting but out of place. It didn't move the story forward. Maybe a little bit (I don't want to spoil the ending).
stanac··on Algorithms we develop software by
Worst kind of jira ticket is just a link to a document that can be edited anytime. In that case I just replace the link with a new link pointing to the fixed version of the document and inform the author of the ticket/document about it.
stanac··on Microsoft begins cracking down on people dodging Windows 11 system requirements
You can block third-party cookies in browser and install extension "i still don't care about cookies". (not sure if and how it works on mobile)
stanac··on EU parliament member hit by Israeli Candiru spyware
Both are "evil". (edit: I am not the poster you replied to)
stanac··on Htmx 2.0.0 has been released
Not OP (and late to the game), but searching his handle led me to https://xakpc.info/series/htmx-dotnet
stanac··on Dbmate: A lightweight, framework-agnostic database migration tool
> I haven’t seen one yet that can run a query to determine if a migration has been applied or not

Entity Framework (both Core and legacy) does that, also DbUp uses migrations table for those that prefer lighter ORMs.

stanac··on What You Get After Running an SSH Honeypot for 30 Days
Thanks, I was thinking about small but public project.
stanac··on What You Get After Running an SSH Honeypot for 30 Days
Thank you, I'll have to try them
stanac··on What You Get After Running an SSH Honeypot for 30 Days
I love TS just for this reason. All ports are locked and ssh-ing is possible only via TS. And for public facing web apps I open only 80 and 443.

Does anyone have any experience with CF tunnels on free account? Is it actually free for smaller apps with less than 1TB of traffic per month? I was wondering about switching to CF tunnel which would mean I could also close 80 and 443 ports and block China (because I read somewhere that most of DDOS attacks come from Chinese locale botnets).

stanac··on Arm says it wants all Snapdragon X Elite laptops destroyed
From wikipedia:

> Wirth's law is an adage on computer performance which states that software is getting slower more rapidly than hardware is becoming faster.

> "The hope is that the progress in hardware will cure all software ills. However, a critical observer may observe that software manages to outgrow hardware in size and sluggishness."

stanac··on This Message Does Not Exist
Remands me of "Operation failed successfully" errors. It was a meme, but in some cases I had to implement failing an operation in a test service fake and log something like that.
stanac··on [dead]
It's possible to change YT video title. Searching for "Cloudflare has become a pig butchering scam but legal" shows the video as the first result. My guess is that title of the video has changed between posting on HN and now.
stanac··on Should I use JWTs for authentication tokens?
1. You can set JWT as cookie value, I think author is describing OAuth 2 problems, not JWT problems. Interestingly JWT is not mentioned in OAuth 2 spec [0].

2. JWT doesn't have to contain user details, it can be a simple reference token used for introspection [1]. This approach removes problems with invalidation and logout since identity service should store invalidated tokens.

3. JWT can contain refresh token id (or hash) and check for invalidated refresh tokens in (distributed) cache. Cache entry should not be long lived, and refresh token shouldn't be long lived if you are using proper refresh token rotation with family invalidation in case of a leak.

That being said cookies are still simplest and safest bet for simple monolith applications.

stanac··on CSharpRepl: C# REPL with syntax highlighting and intellisense
RoslynPad support user input with `Console.ReadLine()`, but that's about it. For me personally it does everything I need for scripting C#. For anything more serous I usually create full program and a bat/sh file to execute it in a conveniently.
stanac··on The search for easier safe systems programming
WPF is MIT licensed, available on github. The fact that it's windows only doesn't make it less FOSS. Microsoft doesn't have incentive to port it to other platforms but other people and companies are free to do that.
stanac··on Proton Mail discloses user data leading to arrest in Spain
So they would have guess which ISP you are using and hope no one else was connected from that ISP to VPN at the same time. I don't think it could be used as evidence (in any country).
