stanac··on Microsoft keeps adding stuff into Windows we don't need
One annoying thing about linux are drivers. They often don't work out of the box. E.g. fingerprint reader, screen brightness, audio too low. I tried multiple distros on multiple laptops, there is almost always some fiddling needed.

On the other hand corp forced me to move from pc to mac, hardware is awesome but I need to get used to software (keyboard shortcuts), it looks and feels like linux with drivers that actually work (I know it technically it's not linux, I'm just saying that it feels like it, probably due to history of unix/bsd/linux).

stanac··on The North Korean fake IT worker problem is ubiquitous
I am not sure it would resolve the issue. About 10 or so years ago I was contacted on LinedIn with offer to "rent my name and face" for a team of Chinese remote workers (probably not those exact words). I rejected the offer without asking for details. Not sure if they were actually from China.
stanac··on WebAssembly: Yes, but for What?
> I think server-side Blazor (with pure JavaScript or TypeScript for logic that needs to happen in the browser,)

Do you mean server side rendering or interactive server mode?

stanac··on Stop Killing Games
I do the same. Today I found out that humble bundle also has DRM-free games. There was a post about baba is you today. That game is not available on GOG but it is available on humble bundle.
stanac··on Stop Killing Games
Or licensed by a third party and they does not want their code to become public knowledge.
stanac··on Zig breaking change – Initial Writergate
This comment smells like LLM output, you have said a lot, but I didn't understand anything.
stanac··on Sony's Mark Cerny Has Worked on "Big Chunks of RDNA 5" with AMD
I don't think he is employed by Sony, but work as a consultant for them. So both Sony PS 4/5 and AMD GPUs have his tech inside.
stanac··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (June 2025)
Still working on sudoku variants app (posted show hn 5 months ago), reworking solving algorithms for better hints and difficulty categorization.

stanac··on ChatGPT is my static site generator
They went commercial (wix, squarespace, ...). Commercial offerings are solving not only building but also hosting, while old WYSIWYG apps where solving only building. Now I haven't use any of the apps (old, or new, so I may be wrong), but it would be great to have something that is free/oss and easier to use than SSGs.
stanac··on The hamburger-menu icon today: Is it recognizable?
Easy i18n? They don't have to translate the UI to 30+ languages.
stanac··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
Github URL should be: https://github.com/mr-karan/logchef (found in announcement post)

Edit: ok, I see you have edited your comment

stanac··on Google is building its own DeX: First look at Android's Desktop Mode
I always thought that MS will make something like that. Android phone with "business" app store and docking support for external screen and peripherals. IIRC one of the last windows phones was from HP with dock support. I guess after the windows phone they just gave up.... There was an attempt at making dual screen ms android phone which was a failure (at least from business perspective).
stanac··on Are .NET 4.x and JDK 8.x the "zombie" runtimes of enterprise software?
I don't see MS dropping support for .NET Framework 4.X. If they do they will probably announce it 10 years upfront, like they did with Silverlight.
stanac··on Show HN: Offline JavaScript PubSub between browser tabs
I did something similar (local storage events) in time of jQuery to sync shopping cart between tabs. Very simple solution, but, IIRC, it didn't work with IE.
stanac··on KOReader: Open-Source eBook Reader
OPDS (Open Publication Distribution System) is protocol in the background. Jellyfin has a plugin for OPDS and works by simply dropping a file in specified directory, but it doesn't support multiple catalogues (i.e. one per library/directory).

Protocol is atom based, chatgpt was able to make a custom OPDS server for my needs within minutes, it took another hour or two to fix and customize generated code.

stanac··on Show HN: A difficult game to test your logic
Really fun. Third level was harder than fourth.
stanac··on Mindfulness mediates the association between chronotype and depressive symptoms
Western countries abandoned their roots when they accepted abrahamic religions.
stanac··on Crew-9 Returns to Earth
I had the same problem with FF. Try using a chromium browser in incognito mode or with all extensions disabled.
stanac··on Half-Life 2 RTX
It's a mod, not made by Valve. Also there are rumors that new HL game is coming this year (or in next 25 years).

That's G-Man voice actor.

stanac··on Past and Present Futures of User Interface Design
Windows Phone (or was it Windows mobile) had an excellent keyboard with caron/accent keys. So e.g. if I they `C` and then caron key it will replace first `C` with `Č`. I was looking for an Android keyboard with same functionality but didn't find one.
stanac··on 3dfx: So powerful, it's kind of ridiculous (2023)
More recent example: In GTA SA in a mission I wasn't able to reach an airplane before it took off unless I lowered the resolution of the game.
stanac··on PayPal honey extension has again "featured" flag in Chrome web store
It's double edged sword. You have to use DNS either way. Everyone should decide for themselves which DNS to use.
stanac··on PayPal honey extension has again "featured" flag in Chrome web store
I won't go into whether FF is worse than chrome, but why do you think Mozilla is as evil as google?
stanac··on Italy moves to reverse anti-nuclear stance
There should be international agreements for nuclear energy where neighboring countries can come and inspect each others power plants, or one org on the continent level.
stanac··on 400 reasons to not use Microsoft Azure
This is a story from some parallel universe right here. You bought a microsoft game and wasn't able to run it on windows, but it works on ubuntu?!? I almost spilled coffee reading this.
stanac··on Tesla sales almost halved in Europe last month
How much time does it take to deliver a vehicle to the buyer? Is sale calculated by number of orders or by number of deliveries?

My guess on the first question is around 30 days, and on second is by number of deliveries. If both guesses are correct we may see the sales go down even more in February.

stanac··on RustDesk – open-source alternative to TeamViewer
I use it to help parents when they need to create/save some document. I haven't use it in a year, don't remember the performance, or at least I didn't notice any problems with it for my use case. The problem I had was with screen scaling. I am using 4K screen with 200% scaling, and my mom is using full HD with 100% scaling. Her remote screen was tiny.

IIRC you can host your own sever instead of using default one, not sure if it would help with performance.

stanac··on He went to jail for stealing someone's identity, but it was his all along
You can for example sing a contract with someone without notarizing it, but you need two witnesses for contract to be valid/accepted by the legal system.

I guess something like this would resolve the situation. Two persons to confirm your identity.

stanac··on Microsoft cracking down people upgrading to Windows 11 on unsupported hardware
With recent developments (last 10ish years) of electron, proton, wine and everything moving to the web I don't need windows anymore. Installed ubuntu on 5 year old thinkpad and it works like a charm, even JetBrains IDEs are available from the app store. I tried windows 11 on that laptop but it was sluggish.
stanac··on He went to jail for stealing someone's identity, but it was his all along
In my country first government issued id is done in the presence of a parent/guardian at the age between 16 and 18. Police before issuing the id will take your fingerprints and you can replace id (if stolen, lost, expired) with a fingerprint only. No questions and no witnesses necessary.
