Kind of related to this - we meet with Google Meets and have its Gemini Notes feature enabled globally. I realised last week that the summary notes it generates puts such a positive spin on everything that it's pretty useless to refer back to after a somewhat critical/negative meeting. It will solely focus on the positives that were discussed - at least that's what it seems like to me.

Fair point. After leaving my comment I realised what would likely be better is an easily replaceable battery. It may take up a bit more space but would IMO be worthwhile implementing.

I set my phone to only charge to 80% because I'd like to see how long I can use it for before itching to replace it - and if I make it to 3+ years having charged its battery to 100% overnight every day it won't have great staying power any longer.

Give me an 8000mah battery. That should take up some more space.

Can probably set up some kind of AI workflow that exports your bookmarks -> attaches them to an LLM chat -> asks the LLM if anything across your bookmarks can be useful for the problem you're tackling/googling/etc.

If everything on show at open sauce were those stupid 3D printed dragons I'd agree with you. But the maker movement is massive and interesting and goes very very deep.

You can self-learn as much about engineering as you'd learn at university. Most kids eventually pivot from wanting to be astronauts/influencers to something more realistic.

IMO tinkering is an amazing hobby which will benefit you in whatever direction your career ends up going in.

A Lot of improvement has happened on Android regarding this. I think Samsungs have 6 or 7 years of guaranteed software updates, as do Pixel phones.

It may be Pixel-exclusive, though I used to use the Google Assistant rules on my old phone and they mostly worked IIRC.

I have 2 rules set on my Pixel -

First one sets my phone to silent when I arrive at work (500m radius I think). It also sets it back to loud (or whatever the previous state was) automatically when I leave that radius.

Second one sets my phone to loud when my phone connects to my home WiFi. This helps with the problem you describe - but agreed, phone stuck on silent isn't generally an issue (until I miss some courier's phone call and kick myself).

I bought this keyboard years ago and enjoyed using it for about a week. Then 3-5 keys stopped working entirely and nothing I did would fix them. Recall having a tough time getting a refund on Amazon.

I got a weird feeling from the MegaLag video, but overall don't think Honey are entirely in the clear either. I've only recently switched to Cursor so am not clued up about everything, but they mention that the embedded indexing they do on your code is shared with others (others who have access to that repository? Unsure).

It did seem to take a while to index, even though my colleagues had been using Cursor for a while, so I'm likely misunderstanding something.

OneDrive space (through MS365 single or family licence) works out much cheaper in my country. I'm sure in the EU it is GDPR-compliant.

YMMV but OneDrive has been improving a lot. Their web photos browsing is comparable to Google Photos these days.

If you use the terminal for any appreciable amount of time I heavily suggest getting fzf (even if just for the search).

Tmux is great if you need any more than 1 terminal window open at once - just remap some of its hotkeys to stuff that make more sense for you (e.g. I use "Alt + |" to split vertically and "Alt + -" (minus) to split horizontally).

Man pages are generally about 500 times longer than I need them to be (just help me do a basic curl/SSH copy/... please) - so I have cheat.sh aliased which helps a lot with simple "how do I use X".

Aliases in general are insanely useful. If you're a fzf search whiz they may not help you as much but seeing people type common commands out multiple times a day... makes me happy knowing I have my alias bank.

It seems nobody has asked/suggested this so I'll do it - I would love to specify time of day/traffic conditions during which to determine time taken to travel.

In the next year or two we'll be looking to move and since we work on the southern side of the city, living out to the north wouldn't work due to traffic through the city.

In the same vein as this I've wondered for a couple years now what the impact of flash storage longevity is on mobile phone performance over time. Felt like my Samsung S8 was very snappy when I got it, yet a couple years later things that used to be fast - like finding specific music, scrolling through the photos in my gallery, etc. - had slowed down considerably.

Could also just be software updates or other things causing this but there should be some component of decreasing performance caused by wear on flash storage.

Have you not had any of the classic Gnome/Linux/Wayland issues? Electron apps running slow/freezing, weird scaling issues, screen recording issues, display output/detection issues, sound and Bluetooth issues, ...

Some of these may be due to my laptop's shoddy support for Linux but I also had issues on my Lenovo ThinkPad X1 a couple years ago.

And per many anecdotes on HN it's not just a "may" - I recall reading about people who had been prompted to upgrade to some paid tier, and upon declining their free tier account was closed.

Exactly how (and why) I try buy things. Not exactly "bulk" buying but more "at least 2" buying.
