stagger87··on Costco starts to sell 'apocalypse bucket' with food that lasts 25 years
> As to why Mormons tend to be so into it, I have a theory.

No need to theorize, the rapture plays a big role in their canon, and is proselytized heavily.

stagger87··on The Right Kind of Stubborn
Snooze, please repeat more of the MBA playbook to me.
stagger87··on The Right Kind of Stubborn
None of this matters, not even PGs post, but it's the comment section, so here we are...

The definition PG gives for an obstinate person is someone who doesn't listen, with the implication that they are "wrong". I'm just presenting a scenario that is very common in my world, where people may not be right or wrong, but differing and strong opinions lead to people being mislabeled as obstinate.

IMO, "Alignment" is a bullshit word used by people to basically say "my way or the highway". I might even say it's mostly used by obstinate people. :)

stagger87··on The Right Kind of Stubborn
Within the context of persistent people at the top of the decision tree, how often are persistent people labeled obstinate because they disagree with another persistent person (likely their boss) on a decision that will likely lead to 2 separate but nearly successful outcomes?
stagger87··on Talent Search versus Talent Development (2019) [pdf]
On reflection, was there anything you would have done or looked for differently in the 3 junior devs? Something you think would actually have changed your outcome? Do you blame yourself in any way for not being able to develop the junior devs?

FWIW, I'm currently on this trajectory (as the mentor).

stagger87··on I was at AMD in the mid-late 2000s helping design CPU/APU/GPUs
No, and the content of the tweets certainly dont support his claim. As someone else pointed out he's already tweeted this "story" in the past. It's all low effort self promotion for his brand.
stagger87··on U++ – Cross-Platform App Development Framework
Small footprint and fast are 2 big ones.
stagger87··on The rarest book in American literature: Poe's Tamerlane
> you are allowed a pass

A pass to write an article about a topic and mention a book you've written about said topic? (That is what we are talking about right?)

Absolutely!

stagger87··on Ask HN: What was your most humbling learning moment?
It's always humbling to think I know a topic pretty well only to meet a true expert on the topic. It makes me think about how much time I spent learning it to not really feel like I know it at all, and makes me second guess my learning process. I can think of several times in my career/life where this has happened.

Also related, learning something, only to find out later that your understanding of something was incorrect, or made incorrect assumptions. Always humbling.

stagger87··on What would happen if a nuclear bomb went off in your backyard
I fixed it to diameter.
stagger87··on What would happen if a nuclear bomb went off in your backyard
Worth noting that 10kT is 3 orders of magnitude(!) smaller than current warheads. The "instant death" diameter is > 10 miles nowadays. So yea, just a full city :)

Edit: radius -> diameter

stagger87··on Windows Recall sounds like a privacy nightmare
> "On Copilot+ PCs powered by a Snapdragon® X Series processor, you will see the Recall taskbar icon after you first activate your device.

Another Windows ARM push... If Recall is only available on these devices I think it's doomed to failure.

stagger87··on Windows 10 reaches 70% market share as Windows 11 keeps declining
You could also buy a Win11 key directly from MS which will activate a Win10 installation if you're worried about legitimacy.
stagger87··on Windows 10 reaches 70% market share as Windows 11 keeps declining
Yes, you just use the Win10 media installer (free download from MS) and buy a win10 key off Amazon or wherever.
stagger87··on Reddit is full of bots: thread reposted comment by comment, 10 months later
Very timely, I just came across this account doing this exact thing if you want to see it in action.

https://www.reddit.com/user/Clear-Car862/

If you inspect their comment history, they are recommending several products in almost every reply. ContractsCounsel is one of the services they recommend. The formula they use for recommending is very similar for every post.

Also interesting, one of their only actual posts mentions the phenomenon of using bots to advertise, I guess trying to throw people off their trail?

stagger87··on Framework Series A-1
I'm not saying you're right or wrong, but you won't find much sympathy for this viewpoint on this forum :)
stagger87··on Google’s newly formed 'Platforms and Devices' team is all about AI
If this article was written 4 years ago the title would have been,

"Google is combining …, and it's all about Blockchain"

stagger87··on Blaze: A High Performance C++ Math Library
It's slower but maybe the target audience is different? Armadillo prioritizes MATLAB like syntax. I use armadillo as a stepping stone between MATLAB prototypes and a hand rolled C++ solution, and in many scenarios it can get you a long ways down the road.
stagger87··on When new hires get paid more, top performers resign first
Recently experienced an excellent colleague ask for a raise to $X, get rejected, leave, the replacement was hired for more than $X, the replacement complained about the workload being too much, and so we hired another body to cover the original developer leaving, again for more than $X. Absolute madness.
stagger87··on The Case Against Homework
> Do you mean like socializing, hobbies, sports and just being a kid

Having assigned homework means you cant do any of these things?

stagger87··on Via ferratas are finally catching on in the United States
Yes, and it's a huge attraction. For better or for worse?
stagger87··on You've just inherited a legacy C++ codebase, now what?
I would be very surprised if most people actually choose to develop in C++. It's a very good language choice for many domains, and I suspect interest and expertise in those domains drives people to C++ more than a desire to program in C++.
stagger87··on Grade inflation at UC Riverside, and institutional pressures for easier grading
I'm curious if you do hiring, and if yes, for how long? There was a time in my career where grades were a data point that could be used. But I agree, nowadays not so much for the engineering roles I deal with.
stagger87··on Grade inflation at UC Riverside, and institutional pressures for easier grading
What do you consider the grades you give your students if not an "evaluation" of their performance in your class? Alternatively, if you do consider them an evaluation, are you saying your grades are not effective at evaluating them?
stagger87··on An extreme ice-age climate 700M years ago
Works for me.
stagger87··on Microsoft Teams outage causes connection issues, message delays
Some sort of banner at the top of Teams indicating there is ongoing issues would be nice.
stagger87··on Microsoft Teams outage causes connection issues, message delays
It's always interesting to hear others experiences. I've used Teams for 4+ years now with zero issues until this morning. I'm only mad in that I tried troubleshooting my PC and network connection for far too long before seeing this thread.
stagger87··on Responses to unicycling
> I wonder if the men's remarks aren't often born of envy?

Is there any other way to interpret it? (Genuinely asking!)

stagger87··on System76 Thelio Major Powered by AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series Performance
You don't know how much they are paying for components. (Hint: It's not retail)
stagger87··on Amazon R&D spending is more than that of all companies and government of France
R&D means something very specific when it comes to tax implications (this context). Most companies I've worked for have included all software development time as R&D (including stuff like modifying buttons). Don't try to force some book definition on it, unless that book is the tax code for R&D tax credits, it doesn't work.
