ssttoo··on How the brain's activity, energy use and blood flow change as people fall asleep
I recently started exploring supplements. Turns out a lot of what you find in the likes of CVS and Whole Foods can be all over the map: from 0 of the actual ingredient to 10x what’s on the label. Current consensus on reputable brands seems to be Thorne, NOW, Life extensions, and Pure. The last one acquired by Nestle, make of that what you will.
ssttoo··on Don't use AI to tell you how to vote in election, says Dutch watchdog
Meta.ai (at least its WhatsApp version) has been really ghosting me lately. For example I asked “what’s CA prop 50?”. Answer:

> Thanks for asking. For voting information, select your state or territory at https://www.usa.gov/state-election-office

A real answer flashes for a second and then this refusal to answer replaces it.

Similarly when I asked about refeeding after a 5-day fast: “call this number for eating disorders”

ssttoo··on Show HN: I built a simple ambient sound app with no ads or subscriptions
Lovely! Couple questions…

- where did you get the noises, are they your own recordings?

- how hard it is to support earlier iOS? For folks like me who are on older phones that cannot be upgraded anymore (iOS 16 personally)

ssttoo··on Almost anything you give sustained attention to will begin to loop on itself
Ha, I was just recently thinking about what you do with attention in different languages. In my native Bulgarian (обръщам внимание) you “turn” your attention as in you “direct” it. Same word for when you turn a page. Like you have but a single attention and it’s up to you where you direct it.

In French (correct me if I’m wrong) you “make” attention, « faire attention ». Like there’s unlimited amount of attention and you can always make more.

ssttoo··on The GitHub website is slow on Safari
After 10 years of using Phabricator at a previous company I am still shocked how bad GitHub is. This the industry standard?!

Too bad Phabricator is maintenance-only now https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phabricator

ssttoo··on What's happening to reading?
Similar experience in neighboring Bulgaria. I remember my dad being upset with me for wasting my time reading “readable little books” (my best effort at approx. translation) meaning fiction, as opposed to proper textbooks.
ssttoo··on Four years of sight reading practice
As a counterpoint, Bartok’s Mikrokosmos [1] was the “textbook” for a piano sight reading class at my community college. He does have a lot of accessible, even pedagogical, pieces.

ssttoo··on Standard Ebooks: liberated ebooks, carefully produced for the true book lover
Exactly, you do get approval before you start, as step 4 says: https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-ste...

In my case I picked a title from the project’s wishlist and almost started but searching the mailing list showed that someone has just started. I found another title by the same author: https://groups.google.com/g/standardebooks/c/IP0emhSQ6Bw/m/B...

ssttoo··on Standard Ebooks: liberated ebooks, carefully produced for the true book lover
I recently started on my first title contribution to the project, it’s a rewarding experience https://github.com/stoyan/edith-wharton_the-custom-of-the-co... It’s HTML all the way down

The step-by-step: https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-ste...

In a nutshell: start with a Project Gutenberg text, clean it up to a high standard, have it peer reviewed and published

ssttoo··on Study finds solo music listening boosts social well-being
Confusing title, I thought there was something special in solo music, e.g. pieces for one piano or a single classical guitar
ssttoo··on Minimal CSS-only blurry image placeholders
Another simple css-only solution as the article mentions is gradients. Like

  background: linear-gradient(
    to right,
    #51463e 0%,
    #28241f 100%
  );

ssttoo··on John Cage recital set to last 639 years recently witnessed a chord change
Beethoven’s 5th symphony (da-da-da-DAA) starts with a rest too, it’s not unusual to notate like this. Many pieces have “pickup” measures which are not complete and much shorter than a full measure. But when the pickup is more than 50% of a normal measure, it’s no longer much of a pickup and starting with a rest to make up the complete measure makes sense.
ssttoo··on I Blog with Raw HTML
Ha! I just did exactly this as a joke [1]. Even using the default Apache’s directory listing page to give me the list of articles

ssttoo··on Double-keyed caching: Browser cache partitioning
A random fact from before the “before” in the article: the cache for all resource types used to be the same. We (ab)used this to do preloading before it was available in the web platform, e.g. download a JavaScript without executing it:

  var js = new Image();
  js.src = 'script.js';
  js.onerror = function(){/* js done */};
Then some browsers started having a separate image cache and this stopped working
ssttoo··on Ask HN: If I want to compose my own music, how can I get started?
In short - all of your ideas are on the right path.

If you’re in the US, consider a class in community college. My CC have one combined piano + music 1. The teacher will guide you to next steps too. CC is inexpensive and a teacher is better (I think) than any course you find online.

I personally went from taking Music 1 out of curiosity to taking every theory, piano, viola, percussion… that was on offer in my CC over the last 6 years. Highly addictive.

ssttoo··on Ask HN: Tools or frameworks to build music theory games
Ah, I know the feeling. I also had a teacher who built his own things with very limited coding skills. Then I started making quick flashcard-style exercises and he was a lot of help testing and helping refine these. So now I have this site with various tools I built over the years: https://www.onlinemusictools.com/

Libs that helped:

- https://github.com/saebekassebil/teoria for scales, chords etc

- https://github.com/0xfe/vexflow for notation

- https://github.com/goldfire/howler.js for playing piano samples. I used to DIY (because I love DIY), not even using WebAudio but recently tried howler and it's abstracting a few things I don't need to worry about

- https://github.com/omnibrain/svguitar/ draw guitar fretboard. I recently did my first guitar-specific exercise and this was good. I even filed a feature request and the dev did it

I'd be happy to help you and your prof if you need anything, lmk

Ah, and the +1 button (instead of Like) in Google+ was appropriated from message board chats
ssttoo··on Google Closure Library has been archived
I remember disliking google’s project names of that era. Too generic and borrow-y. Closure was a concept in JavaScript. Chrome is what Firefox was calling the parts around the rendered page (UI buttons, etc)
ssttoo··on The End of Finale

ssttoo··on Printing Music with CSS Grid
Nice! I run a website with music theory exercises where the notation is pretty simple. I’d love to switch to something like this, because the vexflow (what I use now) API is a little much of a re-learning curve for my twice-a-year-let’s-add-a-new-exercise cadence
