sslayer··on Report on an Unidentified Space Station (1982)
Symptom of living in an informational society. The irony is that labelling things is restrictive, erodes freedom, and inhibits discovery.
sslayer··on Madison Square Garden Uses Facial Recognition to Ban Its Owner’s Enemies
Primarily Democratic backed company that doesn't like Republicans and don't want to provide them service? Boom excluded - "We reserve the right to refuse you service!". And honestly with as much data that has been collected they could legally do it on a data point that's not tied to your politics(ie misdemeanors, felonies, court cases, etc). It's absolutely going to be discriminatory, and they can hide it in the algorithms. And, not to pick on Democrats this is possible for any group, or individual to clearly point at any other group/individual. This is just the start, but it might be the actual end of individual expression without repercussions.

Anybody else get the distinct impression we should be figuring out how to incorporate the three laws NOW, before shit gets very real?

sslayer··on Some things to learn from the British East India Company's growth and demise
Ultimately they understood it was the people, not the product that made money
sslayer··on Ask HN: What's a small example of some of the best code ever written?
The best code is code that is never written.
sslayer··on Cha Bu Duo: The expression that fills western manufacturers in China with dread
Seems to me if you expected a specific item within a specific tolerance and received said item outside of that tolerance, you could then negotiate a lesser payment calculated by being a percentage equal to the difference in tolerance. So ultimately it would equal out by over engineering/over speccing the item to end up with a product within tolerance. Of course if they protest the price difference, well then... 'Cha Bu Duo', right?
sslayer··on Solar-powered, Self-hosted Low-tech Magazine
Is this a whoosh situation where the low tech comes into play?
sslayer··on Netflix hints at password sharing crackdown as subscribers fall
Anyone else tired of the greedy cash grabs? If they haven't figured out a sustainable model to run their business without punishing the consumer of media, I no longer want to be their end product.

sslayer··on 100 Years of Dehumanizing Opioid Users Must End
I tend to think it's more about addiction, and less about the drugs, or perhaps the consequences of said drug addiction.
sslayer··on Britain being forced to go cashless 'against its will'
So,what happens when the following get ahold of your data:

Health insurance companies start buying your purchasing info and decide to up your premiums due to the amount of alcohol you buy, fast food you purchase, or your grocery shopping habits? Do you eat too much red meat, too many carbs, not enough greens? Is your sugar intake put you at a higher risk for diabetes? How may cigars/cigarettes are you smoking? What about marijuana use, or over the counter drugs?

Home owners insurance: What if your shopping data shows risky patterns or behaviors - do you or spouse buy too many candles, is your home at a greater risk for fire hazard?

Law Enforcement: How much ammo do you purchase? Are you frequently buying guns? Are you an active shooter risk? Are you spending too much at strip clubs? Are you spending too much money in high risk neighborhoods?

Obviously these are all just examples, but don't think for a second that they don't already have most of this data, and can brainstorm many other use cases for it, honestly we are just living on borrow time at the moment before it gets unbearable.

sslayer··on Nintendo Switch prevents downgrades by irreparably blowing its own fuses (2020)
The problem is when an upgrade limits or removes features from the time of first purchase - it's akin to changing the terms of an agreement after signing it.

sslayer··on Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) – a leap forward in technology (2020)
Is this used by starlink? A recent video review was complaining about a proprietary Ethernet cable with a weird adapter and high cost.
sslayer··on YSFlight – A free flight simulator where anything is possible
I've come to learn that anything online is impermanent. Websites/communities/gaming/business/programming languages - it will all eventually be deprecated for something newer/faster/better - Honestly, the only thing that is mostly untouched are the underlying protocols - and there are plans to change those as well. The absolute worst part about it is the loss of history, however even the physical world can't escape that - like tears in the rain.
sslayer··on I paid for a perpetual license of TeamViewer. Stop calling and emailing me
We spent 20 years seeding the web and our phones with popups, and now we are surprised when we have popup people?
sslayer··on Workers are calling out sick in droves
At the Local and State level - I don't understand why people don't get this - at the Federal level you have representation. The United States intent was to Unite the States on Federal/National issues - not local ones - the intent was to leave the states to rules at the state level, not make sure "everyone in the United States" is "doing the same thing".
sslayer··on Former Uber Chief Security Officer to Face Wire Fraud Charges
You know he was pulling down big $$'s and he is very high profile- with a breach like that it most likely would have put his job at jeopardy, not to mention its not going to look good on a resume.
sslayer··on Congress Needs to Stop Day Trading, Says Sen. Mark Warner
Does anyone actually believe this is going to accomplish anything meaningful? I'm sure there is thousands of more loopholes to get around it. We should be focused on accountability to the American people, not just the rich.
sslayer··on Colors in movies and TV: What happened to them?
Conspiracy theorist here; TPTB/Hollywood is selling us on how bleak the future is, as if they wish to manipulate peoples emotions.
sslayer··on The Universe Is Expanding Faster Than It Should Be
I've always maintained that we are slowly falling toward the center of a black hole that is larger than our current known universe. The rate of expansion is just the speed the universe is "falling, yet due to the absolutely fantastic size of the black hole it will take billions of years to collapse in on ourselves.
