ssl232··on Ryanair – when every page is a dark pattern
I recall a pattern they used to use, probably illegal, when paying for a flight quoted in a foreign currency. Ryanair would "helpfully" offer for you to pay in your own currency with their awful exchange rate, with the option to instead pay in the advertised foreign currency (thus making use of your credit card's exchange rate - typically the market rate) on a pop-up only visible if you click the tiny "more information" link made to look like terms and conditions. The opt-out was not even on the same page, invisible to anyone but those most alert to these tricks. That probably netted them a good 10% extra margin on 95% of sales through deception. Disgraceful behaviour.

ssl232··on CamelCase vs underscores: Scientific showdown (2011)
> The language's standard library will expose names using the language's convention

In Python the logging library is written in camel case (as it was heavily based on log4j) unlike most of the rest of the standard library, but the developers have let it be because fixing it would break backwards compatibility, and in any case PEP 8 [1] says consistency within a module is more important than global consistency.

In my opinion they should have fixed it in the move from Python 2 to 3, but I guess they had enough headaches from that.

Presumably the road has to be closed for the bridge to travel? I assume this takes place at night.
ssl232··on Pyspread – Pythonic Spreadsheet
I see it uses numerical designations for both the columns and rows allowing indexing like a 2D matrix. Nice. One of the many annoyances of Excel is the alphabetic columns that make even less sense beyond 26.

Can you tap your contactless card at the barriers to pay for several passengers, e.g. by handing the card to the next one coming in? Or this this method only for single travellers?
ssl232··on Macaroons Escalated Quickly
And the water supply. And the central building on farms (in Scotland, at least). It's a silly country.
ssl232··on Macaroons Escalated Quickly
American English, but not British. Dinner here is a starter, main course and dessert. "Entrée" messes with my head as well, since it very much sounds like a starter.
ssl232··on Macaroons Escalated Quickly
TIL macarons [1] are also known as macaroons [2]. Where I'm from, macaroons are dense, sweet coconut treats and the French sweets are known as macarons. But from the Wikipedia article I see macaroons mean many different things to many different people.

ssl232··on Why you've never been in a plane crash
One of the most important pieces of legislation in the UK that helped improve safety in workplaces was the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which placed a duty of care on organisations to look after the wellbeing of their staff. One of the tenets is to take near misses seriously. According to a health and safety engineer in a course I attended, near misses are like gifts from the heavens, as they show you exactly how something could go wrong despite no one getting hurt, giving organisations a chance to improve their processes. If a workplace accident does occur, the Health and Safety Executive (who enforce the act in large organisations) can levy enormous fines for preventable accidents especially where there is evidence of a near miss beforehand.
ssl232··on Capturing the ripples of spacetime: LISA gets go-ahead
Indeed, a 4-satellite orbit is probably not a stable one unlike the 3-satellite orbit proposed for LISA. But the 4th satellite already isn't needed due to the conical orbit of the 3-satellite constellation. Fig 5(c) in "On the antenna pattern of an orbiting interferometer" [1] shows the antenna pattern for a LISA-like constellation and it's practically isotropic over a year, and for shorter periods the signals in LISA's sensitive band will be observed for long enough that they will not occupy its less sensitive directions for long and can thus still easily be detected with high SNR.

ssl232··on Value of life
The National Health Service in the UK maintain a value of life years, used to calculate whether to pay for the use of life extending drugs: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-28983924. It's quite low in the grand scheme of things; about £30-80k/year depending on the metric.

ssl232··on Leaf blowers are a scourge. Why is it hard to get rid of them?
Right at the very bottom the article suggests the correct way to deal with fallen leaves: leave them alone. They decompose and provide nutrients to the grass.
ssl232··on USB Power Delivery for Hobby Projects
I wondered about that as well. My best guess is that it's something to do with which pin makes contact first in the barrel, and having the battery parallel to the barrel's contacts, it might matter which one contacts first (though I can't think why).
ssl232··on YouTube Begins Blocking Users Who Use Adblock
I'm not even convinced they'll make more money clamping down on ad blocking this way. I'd happily pay £1 or £2 a month for no ads, which is still infinitely more than they make out of me now (given I never willingly click on, engage with or otherwise view their or anyone else's ads), but I know a rip-off when I see one and £12.99/month definitely is.
ssl232··on Thunderbird 115.4.0
Hmm. Do I have it right that you mean you can't send from e.g. "test@example.com" (using "Customize From Address..." then entering that address in the From field) unless another address for the domain "example.com" is set up as an account in Thunderbird (e.g. "hello@example.com")? If that's what you mean, then I don't think that's correct, as I just tried it and Thunderbird let me send the message despite me not having any account for example.com in my profile. I did of course get a response from example.com telling me there was no MX server, but that tells me Thunderbird went as far as sending it.
ssl232··on Thunderbird 115.4.0
> Inability to easily edit the from address

This has been possible for years. Click the From address then "Customize From Address..." and enter whatever you like. But

is indeed correct, and annoys me too.
