ssd532··on Meta to release open-source commercial AI model
I read it in all such discussions. What does it mean? I just have a very high level understanding of AI models. No idea how things work under the hood or what knobs can be tweaked.
ssd532··on Show HN : Nova - GPT with composable prompts, workspaces, + LlamaIndex
Thanks for the detailed explanation. The product looks interesting. I'll give it a try.
ssd532··on InfluxDB Cloud shuts down in Belgium; some weren't notified before data deletion
> don't instantly nuke the account if a payment goes astray or delayed

Hetzner deleted my server just one week after my payment due date. My credit card failed the payment for some reason. I didn’t notice this because I was ill with Covid. They sent me one email (or at least, I received only one email) as a warning. I only realized the server was gone when my services stopped working. I’m not sure if such a short warning time is common practice among hosting companies, or if it’s unique to Hetzner.

What does it mean that it has persistent memory?
ssd532··on Kagi raises $670k
Yes, they use other search engines. Check their FAQ for details https://kagi.com/faq#Where-are-your-results-coming-from
ssd532··on The Difference Between Root Certificate Authorities, Intermediates and Resellers
Ah, got it now. Thanks.
ssd532··on The Difference Between Root Certificate Authorities, Intermediates and Resellers
Thanks. But this is where my confusion is. I am wondering whether the certificate installed on the web server was signed by Let's Encrypt root or some intermediary (may be another let's encrypt entity). It was issued and installed using standard let's encrypt tooling for Ubuntu.
ssd532··on The Difference Between Root Certificate Authorities, Intermediates and Resellers
Yes, right. It's ISRG root certificate that's present in my OS certificate store. I was trying to troubleshoot our new web server where we have set up a let's encrypt certificate but some clients report issues. SSL lab test identifies the problem as missing intermediate certificate. Chrome doesn't have any problem accessing the HTTPS URL though. The problem I was trying to fix is my Go code that refuses to access this URL stating it can not validate the certificate. Sorry I am on mobile so can't give exact details.

This was a timely article but still left me confused.

ssd532··on The Difference Between Root Certificate Authorities, Intermediates and Resellers
Ok so Let's Encrypt is not a root CA? From the post it seems it is an intermediate CA that would be verified by verifying there chain up until the root CA. But I have Let's Encrypt CA certificate installed in my operating system. And so I am still confused what's a root CA and what's an intermediate one.
ssd532··on Ask HN: What are some of the most elegant codebases in your favorite language?
Can you elaborate point 2, please?I am wondering how is that related to the issue of pointer and value semantics.
ssd532··on Weird GPT-4 behavior for the specific string “ davidjl”
so, when they discovered this in GPT-2 they should have excluded this subreddit from the training data for GPT-3, right?
ssd532··on Redditor creates working anime QR codes using Stable Diffusion
Working for with iPhone's scanner.
ssd532··on Anthropic's 100k context is now available in the web UI
I am very impressed with the quality of GPT-4, even with the 8k model. However, I have started reaching the limit of what the 8k model can do. I am eagerly awaiting the release of the 32k model.

Claude 100k model is nowhere near in terms of quality in my experience.

ssd532··on Show HN: Boring Report, a news app that uses AI to desensationalize the news
Thanks a lot. This is great. Any tricks for Youtube mobile app as well? Maybe any unofficial app you recommend?
ssd532··on Why is OAuth still hard in 2023?
If you have already evaluated what are your thoughts on Keycloak? How does it compare with your stack?
ssd532··on Marginalia: DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content
That's much better. would love to use it.
ssd532··on Ask HN: Is ChatGPT just kinda shit for programming help?
I like ChatGPT more because of its conversationial interface. I can talk to it and refine the code, it can suggest alternatives, I can fix its mistakes, and so on -- we both help each other and develop the solution. This kind of two way communication is not possible with Copilot.
ssd532··on The art of auto engineering
Looks like the app is broken. I made a payment through the app and still don't have access to the course.
ssd532··on Deduplicate a slice in Go, use sort or a map?
BTW thanks for scc. Got to know from the other comment that you are the author. I use it on my solo projects to get sense of how much work I am actaully doing.
ssd532··on Deduplicate a slice in Go, use sort or a map?
I appreciate the effort you've put into sharing your learnings. My intention was not to criticize. I just wanted to point it out for everyone's benefit. I apologize if my comment came across as harsh.
ssd532··on Deduplicate a slice in Go, use sort or a map?
> You could probably improve the above by using an interface rather than a bool to reduce the memory impact. If you need a function that preserves the order that might be a better implementation.

An empty interface occupies 16 bytes. Perhaps the author meant an empty struct which consumes nothing.

ssd532··on To supercharge learning, look to play
This is awesome. Is there any way in Roblox we can whitelist games? The problem with allowing Roblox is kids go there and do all sorts of other addictive games and activities and forget what they were there for.
ssd532··on Update to Kagi Search Pricing
I am exactly in the same boat. I had raised my concerns regarding pricing twice and both the times they had said that they will introduce new pricing model. I was really hoping that they will reduce my $10/mo subscription pricing.
ssd532··on Ask HN: Is StackOverflow Dying?
I don't like that approach because the contents are not searchable using public search engines.
ssd532··on Ask HN: When did you realize you need Kubernetes in your setup?
I am managing containers using docker compose.
ssd532··on Handpicked No-Signup Tools
How can it leverage web3? I am on a break and in a hunt for a web3 project to build.
ssd532··on The media still doesn't understand what it means to own Bitcoin
Where should one store the 24 word key though? Are password managers a good option? Physically storing them on paper has its own problems.
ssd532··on It is amazing anything works at all. A rant on software development
I completely agree on that part. I wanted to highlight that at least the bigcos should provide consistent and comprehensive documentation for their popular libraries/APIs.
ssd532··on It is amazing anything works at all. A rant on software development
Is there a word for it? If not we will soon need it. There are many such long tweet sequences I have seen, some by journalists. So it's becoming a common thing like web logs -> blogs two decades ago.
ssd532··on It is amazing anything works at all. A rant on software development
I have seen the same incomplete and inconsistent documentation for many Google and Microsoft projects including Kubernetes and many cloud based services. And it is not only about their REST APIs but for their SDKs for programming languages/frameworks not limited to Javascript/Node.
