srhngpr··on Bank transfers as a payment method
Agreed and it's free across all banks, and some have even raised daily transfer limits to $7000 or more. It's also one of the easiest and fastest no-fee methods to transfer money into crypto exchanges/platforms in Canada.
srhngpr··on Show HN: You.com, private search engine that summarizes the web – built for devs
I get that and appreciate that this was a tough choice, but the alternative you're proposing (1) requires several more clicks, (2) expects the end user to trust an extension that is unknown to them at the onset, and (3) does not provide an intuitive way for the average user to know they can use incognito to try it out.

You have an extremely memorable URL and in my view, the quality and accuracy of the results should naturally help spread the word for you if you do indeed provide a compelling alternative.

I'm sorry, I just don't buy your argument about "monopoly and controlling the browser" when you don't require an extension for those using Firefox, Edge, etc. - yet you _hope_ that Google will still add you to the default list of search engines.

srhngpr··on Show HN: You.com, private search engine that summarizes the web – built for devs
If your search engine requires an extension to work and display the results, it's a total non-starter. Cannot suggest this to any non-HN crowd. Good luck.
srhngpr··on What Is the Most Free TLD?
I have owned and managed my .is domain directly on ISNIC for over a decade. They support 2FA and the website is available in English as well.
srhngpr··on FTC files new antitrust complaint against Facebook
they are not. you can do cross-messaging between FB and IG if both parties have accounts linked, but otherwise you can have an IG account that is not linked to FB.
srhngpr··on Intrinsic, a new Alphabet company
Geocities had a WYSIWYG website builder, so yes there was some software involved. It's how I learned how to build my first website when I was 12.
srhngpr··on CoffeeShopWifi.com – An HTTP website for connecting to guest WiFi
Agreed - I always use example.com as well.

Also worth noting that example.net, while not listed on the IANA page, is also reserved.

srhngpr··on Tell HN: SMS-based two-factor authentication is not secure
This has been rolled out and in use in British Columbia, Canada as well. We have a digital ID app for iOS and Android, which you verify your ID with first, then for government sites (e.g., health records), you login through this app instead - there are no emails, usernames, or passwords involved.
srhngpr··on Gandi.net Major Outage
I've been using Name.com for more than a decade and have had zero issues.
srhngpr··on Interview with CEO of rsync.net: “no firewalls and no routers”
A Canadian location does solve the regulatory requirements of Canadian customers. Even federal government agencies in Canada no longer have issues using US-based hyperscalers (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) that have Canadian datacenters.
srhngpr··on Apple offers 2,400 icons for free
Maybe the title of this post should reflect that it's not exactly free.
srhngpr··on Google to stop selling ads based on your specific web browsing
The Axios version [0] of this is so much more palatable, to the point and not behind a paywall. Can we maybe consider swapping to this instead?

This was so well written, thank you for sharing and best wishes for a speedy recovery!
srhngpr··on Why Isn’t Telegram End-to-End Encrypted by Default (2017)
From 2018 but also, this is referring to moving away from E2E encryption, which is true. However, the backup file that gets uploaded to Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iOS) is encrypted (i.e., Google and Apple cannot read its content). See: https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/136072/how-can-...
srhngpr··on Why Isn’t Telegram End-to-End Encrypted by Default (2017)
That statement is correct. E2E encryption is only in effect between two devices communicating with each other. The moment the messages leave the app in any capacity (e.g., screenshots, backup, forwarded to another convo/contact, etc.) it is not longer protected by E2E encryption.

The backup file itself that is uploaded to iCloud/GDrive is encrypted; see: https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/136072/how-can-...

srhngpr··on Why Isn’t Telegram End-to-End Encrypted by Default (2017)
I keep hearing this, but is there an actual reliable source that confirms it? If it were that easy, then I could technically restore anyone's GDrive backup from WhatsApp on my Android phone simply if I got access to the same Google account, but I believe this is not possible as you have to also verify the phone number via SMS.
srhngpr··on Why Isn’t Telegram End-to-End Encrypted by Default (2017)
The backups aren't E2E encrypted, WhatsApp even tells you this in the backup settings page in the app. But if they hold the decryption key and the only way to get it is via registering with a WhatsApp server via SMS verification, then doesn't that imply that Apple and Google don't have the key and can't read or restore the messages?
srhngpr··on Why Isn’t Telegram End-to-End Encrypted by Default (2017)
Thanks for replying! This is concerning if true. Is this documented or proven anywhere? I had heard something similar, but can't seem to find any reliable source that confirms the messages are in plaintext.
srhngpr··on Why Isn’t Telegram End-to-End Encrypted by Default (2017)
Genuine question, and I'm certainly no expert in this - just a curious end-user, aren't the backups that WhatsApp creates and uploads to iCloud/GDrive kind of encrypted? As in, I can't simply download the backup file and access the messages and media?

My understanding is that in order to restore/access said messages and media, you would need the SIM/phone number that created the backup file and would have to register again with WhatsApp to receive a decryption key from WhatsApp servers. So doesn't this mean in effect that even though it's not super secure, the backup file stored on iCloud/GDrive is also protected from Apple and Google's prying eyes?

EDIT: For anyone interested, the backups are indeed encrypted. See: https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/136072/how-can-...

srhngpr··on Wirecard files for insolvency after financial hole laid bare
Because it is an absolute race to the bottom (on price) when it comes to Big 4 audit. There is really no distinction or difference in services provided between the firms. You can practically switch from EY to one of the other three (if they don't mind excluding themselves from consulting work) overnight.

Disclaimer: work for Big 4 but in tech consulting, not audit.

srhngpr··on Amazon’s New Competitive Advantage: Putting Its Own Products First
I think OP's point is still valid; doesn't matter if you go to one store or another (e.g., Walmart or Safeway), if that store has a house brand, chances are their equivalent house brand is at the same level or higher than the name brand.
srhngpr··on Show HN: Print a WiFi Login Card
Recently came across a QR Coder [1] that can generate for a variety of different purposes, including Wifi (e.g., Bookmarks, Email, Contact, GeoLocation, SMS, URL link, etc.) - the same website also has a encoder/decoder and an API [2], but I've not tried those features.

srhngpr··on Apple acquires Dark Sky
It has always provided the option to select between Dark Sky, Weather Bit or AccuWeather. So while Dark Sky may go away, at least there are two other options, and hopefully they'll add others in light of this news.
srhngpr··on Apple acquires Dark Sky
I've been using Overdrop [0] for a few months now. Has great widgets and can select from a few different sources for the weather data too.

srhngpr··on Microsoft begins showing an anti-Firefox ad in the Windows 10 start menu
I agree with you. This comment should be higher up as it's more objective to this whole situation than a lot of the top comments that quickly resort to Microsoft bashing and "remembering the old Microsoft is the same Microsoft" type of comments.
srhngpr··on Show HN: Heimdall – Self-managed email alias/forwarding service
I am using Exchange Online, and I cannot reply using aliases that I've created. It also always defaults to the primary username. Anyone figure out a way to make this work in Exchange Online?
srhngpr··on Students defeat new 'Barnacle' parking clamp, skip fines and get free internet
>the same people who park illegally tend to be cavalier about blocking bike lanes and curb cuts, speeding, rolling through crosswalks, etc.

this is generalization at the next level.

Anecdotally, when I was in university, I saw parking fees for the spot that I paid for in my first semester go from $180 for the semester (13 weeks) to $600/semester in my 4th year. I think parking tends to be a bit of an issue at many universities across north america.
