sratner··on 3 reasons why Knol will beat Wikipedia
Having checked out the top five, I have to say I found the knol to be most useful in actually teaching someone to read Russian. The current #1 may have been there for a long time, but it is a very poor resource. The knol certainly has the right to be ranked among these pages, if not higher.

Objective or not, Google is giving me the information I am looking for, hence it is behaving exactly as I would want it to.

sratner··on Olin Shivers' Infamous Scsh Reference Manual
Haven't played with scsh before, but the thing that struck me as interesting while flipping through this was just how similar Microsoft's powershell is in terms of look-and-feel. I suspect it [scsh] may have been a source of inspiration :)
sratner··on Why Java Will Always Be Slower than C++
Exactly. In .NET heap allocations are practically as fast as stack allocations, although of course there are other things you need to be aware of when using a compacting generational GC, such as avoiding medium-lived objects at all costs. .NET does also provide value-types that can be allocated on the stack, and you use them for reasons that are better than "heap allocations are slow".

I think the moral of the story is: to get the maximum performance out of your memory management system, you need to know how it works. This applies equally well to C++.

"Cambridge" includes companies in the UK.

But then again, most of the companies that come up for Boston are not actually in Boston. Need something like address:Boston, but they don't seem to have implemented that yet.

sratner··on Ask HN: Flex/Flash, Authenticating your .swf + decompiling
My instinct would be: don't bother. If the data you are protecting is worth enough to someone, they will decompile it anyway.
sratner··on The Charges Against ActionScript 3.0
With the exception of stricter typing, these are problems of the new Flash runtime, not AS3 (even the ones labeled as AS3). As a language, AS3 is far superior to its predecessors, but because of its simultaneous release with the new runtime the blame is often misplaced.

As far as missing runtime features go, most of the points are very valid. Top of my list: sandboxing of external content and cloning movie clips (which would presumably be implemented in a cheaper way than just creating multiple instances).

sratner··on 3-D CAPTCHA: A way to fix the broken CAPTCHAs?
It is a meaningful way to attack many of the current captchas, if the alphabet and the space of transformations applied to it is sufficiently small. It is being done right now, in fact.
sratner··on 3-D CAPTCHA: A way to fix the broken CAPTCHAs?
I have a captcha idea: lets make users watch a 90-minute movie and summarize the plot in 6 words. Oh, and serve ads over it while they are watching, just to recover the bandwidth costs.

We are working to fix that soon. Thanks for the report. -Simon

You are just jealous you don't have one.
