squishy47··on What are some cools topics one can learn about that aren't software dev related
I come from a music background but what are some good music resources either for those who aren't into music or those of us which are stuck in the "same old" universe??

ooo nice. what specific areas would you recommend a philosophy noob start on, and what are some good offline and online intro resources to the topic?
squishy47··on Ask HN: What small library or tool do you want that doesn’t exist?
it's not a cli tool but https://snapdrop.net/ is local network file transfer
squishy47··on RedwoodJS 1.0
and not just what it is but also how it makes my life better.
squishy47··on Microplastics detected in human blood in new study
I think the common term for gold poisioning is greed.
squishy47··on Dogs are good models for human psychiatric disorders, study argues
"But saying that there are no fundamental differences seems wrong too." i don't think thats what they're saying, though i see how it could be interpreted as that. i think what they're saying is that on a basic level we (animals/mamals?) are very similar. ofc there are big differences between species but the building blocks all come from the same place.

also yes we're the only ones to do all that stuff but it doesn't deny the difference between animals, it compares the output of a species abilities (for lack of a better word), our ability just happens to be a really powerful one and one that compounds really quickly.

i'm always surprised by these "we just discovered humans and animals are the same" articles, i've never understood the difference between humans and animals, i always believed we all shared similar fundamental bits, just didn't consider the brain bit but it makes sense.
squishy47··on Ask HN: Did you benefit from getting a dog?
you only asked for the benefits that list is way to long :p Here is a brain dump instead...

- I got one 3/4 months into lockdowns after deciding i would never spend that much time in an office again. Don't get one if everyone in the house spends the majority of they're time out of the house, it's not fair on the dog, they are the definition of social. i take him to day care when i do need to go to the office. - I also wasn't comfortable getting a shelter dog as we already have cat and my previous dogs didn't like cats, so we played it safe with a pup. - Walking is only fun if you teach them how to walk nicely, having them act out makes the walk infuriating. - Make sure you and your partner are on the same page in terms of training technique and the "rules, boundaries and limitations" of the household, we weren't and thats why he walks poorly. - get them socializing with every other creature possible and in the right way, mine wouldn't bat an eye at a cat or a chicken but will pull your arm off to say hi to other dogs. - similar to the first, having a night out and staying at a friends is more complicated than without a dog this isn't a big deal but is not something i ever considered when i was a kid (obv). - they are not cats, they are toddlers if not more intelligent but it means they need the same kind of attention as one.

pros - it's nice having someone to talk to when i'm the only one home plus it gets me do excercise in various forms throughout the day. i no longer need to pedal my bike. - Just having them around is much less lonely/very comforting.

overall me and my partner have benefitted for having a dog

squishy47··on Over ear wireless headphone recommendations for many hours of coding?
yep i agree. Got the XM4's in sept 2020 for £350 used them everyday until the dog got them. I immediately ordered another pair on amazon, and at £250 now i couldn't recommend them enough. - Sound is great for this type/price of headphone. - ANC is great and the wind noise-cancelling option is incredible. - comfort is great - battery is good recharge speed is great. - multi-device support is meh, airpods are better at this. - dog proofing sucks.
squishy47··on Ask HN: How to get started with audio programming?
Cycling 74's Max is a really good way to get into audio (and visual) programming. It introduces the concepts of programming and DSP whilst still keeping things beginner friendly. It's a lot more beginner friendly that something like JUCE which, while super powerful, has a much steeper learning curve and requires you to know C++. Major downside is that it's not suitable for making full audio plugin products, rather I would use it to prototype a plugin, the DSP logic and even the UI before writing any text-based code for a VST/AU.

You can absolutely make a nice synth that takes input from pretty much anything you can attach to a computer.

And as everyone else has said - theAudioProgrammer is good too.

(Edit) - Pure Data (PD) is an open source alternative to Max which is free. I've heard people recommend it but never used it myself.

squishy47··on Ask HN: What’s the Next Big Thing?
I can see decentralised cloud computing gaining more traction, things like IPFS but with computation/logic processing too. blockchain and crypto are only just starting.
squishy47··on Ask HN: What under-the-radar technology are you excited about?
Played around with it a few weeks ago. It was super easy to get going with it. I just dunno what benefits it gives over traditional storage? besides the classic crypto, "censorship resistant". (Also hello HN, this is the first time I've posted anything :p )
