squircle··on Ask HN: Why don't schools allow students to "spend" their grades on indie games?
My feeling is the affordance students need to succeed would be better facilitated by project based learning goals. Why not give them credit for making games?
squircle··on Voice assistant is profiling you, just not in the way you expect
This reminds me of a post (here? Reddit maybe? circa ~2011) where the author suggested patronizing websites visited often by wealthy, powerful people to trick google ads into thinking you regularly walk around with a top hat and monocle. I think about this sort of thing often when the ads and other content I'm being served abruptly changes tone.

Edit: date estimation, add p.s.: I've tried to find this post or article in the past but had no luck with HN search.

squircle··on Is there ever a good reason to debate someone who is not arguing in good faith?
Good counterpoint.
squircle··on Is there ever a good reason to debate someone who is not arguing in good faith?
Ah, yes. So, a precondition to meaningful debate is that all parties agree on the game (if not the rules of engagement?)
squircle··on Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA): When Every Task Feels Like a Threat
I dont think you should apologize if the article reflects ideas youve synthesized yourself. Has using LLMs to translate your thinking improved your use of the language?
squircle··on Fruit of the Poisonous Llama? (2023)
> I suspect we're about to hear some arguments from AI-maximalists that LLaMA is sentient and that deleting it would be akin to murder - and wiping out AIs trained on stolen property is literally genocide. I don't believe that for a second.

Me thinks anthropomorphizing clocks is as silly as worrying if the boiling water in the pot feels pain. Even if it was feasible for a machine to be conscious, it would be conscious at a lower level than "software", which, to me, has come to resemble a hyper hyperbolic information layer (emerging and part/parcel of human consciousness.) (Call it an egregore if you want, but to me it seems more like a data lake.) This may be a platitude but, any agency the machine possesses is due to the human agency that nudged it in such a direction. We've created a lovely mirror test for ourselves.

squircle··on the US Military Debates Possible Deployment on US Soil
I don't think this will happen.

var that = this;

p.s. you can edit the title and add it back if you catch it in time.

squircle··on Ask: What are the odds of the California fire making a full circle?
How would you model such a thing? Are there open source weather modeling tools and data available?
squircle··on How Enlightened Were the Pirates of Madagascar?
> Ratsimilaho’s rule, Graeber says, was a “masculine riposte to the self-assertion of women who allied themselves with pirates.” He argues that ambitious local women, including many successful merchants, had been able to get pirates to concede power, because, although the men brought treasures with them, when they arrived they had no social or cultural capital. When women were excluded from kabary — village assemblies where community members sat around gravely smoking tobacco and drinking honey wine — it constituted a provocation in a world where “local women clearly had the upper hand.”

squircle··on A Supermarket in California (1955)
> There are wonderful texts by people who didn't rape minors or advocate for its legalization(although arguably the latter is an opinion, while the former is a crime).

Of course there are. Apologies if I triggered you?

squircle··on A Supermarket in California (1955)
Well, yeah... If you read this poem, it's right there on the surface. I see no reason to defend the author's character--the text is what it is.
squircle··on A Supermarket in California (1955)
Nice. I was vibing to this poem you shared earlier: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42639593

(I'm not familiar with Carl Sandburg and appreciate the introduction.)

squircle··on Show HN: Chat-tree: a chat UI organized as a tree
Great idea. I've been thinking of something similar. Beyond branching, it might be useful to be able to manually edit/delete/add to the context window (both user prompts and LLM responses.) This way, when the LLM returns and almost correct response, you can fix the typo or error, and move on with the conversation without polluting the context window with petty requests.
squircle··on NASA remains silent on why crew went to hospital after dragon splashdown
Andromeda strain on the one hand; gravity sucks on the other. There must be a psychological/neurological toll, like wearing prismatic glasses that invert your vision until the mind adjusts.
squircle··on How AI Makes Art More Interesting
> In my opinion, generative AI has only amplified the value of truly human excellence. If a machine can generate bits that are in turn transformed into any analog signal that one can imagine, then it will flood the market with slop. In turn, true originality will only become more scarce and more valuable.
squircle··on Ask HN: How does HN preserve state so well?
The HN DOM is a testament to a bygone era. Remember when the web wasn't flooded with tutorials and you had to reverse engineer other people's work to learn new things?
squircle··on Americans, your calls and texts can be monitored by Chinese spies
Be sure to give them a good show!
squircle··on Reverse Engineering Semiconductors with LLMs?
I've been thinking about this. Also wondering if LLMs could design basic circuits or PCBs.

squircle··on I Fight for the User
> It's been clear for quite some time that the early social media strategery of "jam a million people in a colosseum and let them fight it out with free speech" isn't panning out, but never has it been more clear than now, under the Elon Musk regime, that being beholden to the whims of a billionaire going through a midlife crisis isn't exactly healthy for society. Or you. Or me. Or anyone, really.
