squidsoup··on LLMs are eroding my software engineering career and I don't know what to do
> I think a great example of what probably will happen is found in Suno, the AI Music thing. I don't know if y'all have tried it, but it now produces really good stuff.

Suno doesn't make music, it makes simulacra of music. Music is only made by humans.

squidsoup··on When AI Builds Itself: Our progress toward recursive self-improvement
The breakthroughs in mass state surveillance are coming, never fear.
squidsoup··on When AI Builds Itself: Our progress toward recursive self-improvement
It's comforting to know that Anthropic's most capable model, Mythos, is named for the Lovecraftian universe replete with horrifying evil gods with complete indifference to humanity. Nothing at all to worry about.
squidsoup··on When AI Builds Itself: Our progress toward recursive self-improvement
That's a process problem at your company - no developer should be proposing branches over 1k loc (or whatever your agreed tolerance threshold is) without a very good reason, vibe coded or not.
squidsoup··on Larry Ellison: "Citizens will be on their best behavior because we’re recording"
It’s not a matter of belief - cost of rent and food in Chinese cities are 50-70% lower than US cities. There are hundreds of sources that will confirm that.

China’s food policy is also well documented https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_policy_in_China

squidsoup··on Larry Ellison: "Citizens will be on their best behavior because we’re recording"
While that’s true, the Chinese government does also seem to be motivated to keep the cost of housing and food low for its citizens, and provide services and facilities for the public good.
squidsoup··on 'Backrooms' Stuns with $81M Debut
House of Leaves form of hypertextual academic satire is so firmly bound to the written word that it would be un-filmable, but you could make a film from the Navidson Record (and it would potentially be much more interesting than Backrooms).
squidsoup··on 'Backrooms' Stuns with $81M Debut
Showing alongside Obsession, another horror film made by a YouTuber.
squidsoup··on On Labubu and the Hyperreal
You don't need to care about the product to find the sociology interesting.
squidsoup··on Show HN: Gaussian Splat of a Strawberry
You might enjoy some of my art derived from gaussian splats in that case, I've been calling them gaussographs.

squidsoup··on Postmortem: TanStack NPM supply-chain compromise
This was a GitHub Actions hack, nothing related to publishing on npm was compromised.
squidsoup··on Postmortem: TanStack NPM supply-chain compromise
If cargo was as popular as npm, the same issues would surface.
squidsoup··on Chrome removes claim of On-device Al not sending data to Google Servers
nice, thank you
squidsoup··on Chrome removes claim of On-device Al not sending data to Google Servers
Has anyone found a browser with comparably good dev tools to Chrome?
squidsoup··on A 1960s art school experiment that redefined creativity
> And I have to imagine and indulge in some projection here and guess that any of the artists may have been looking for more of a challenge, or more meaning

I think one reason it may be so difficult to express this concretely, is that artists are often looking for an ineffable quality.

squidsoup··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B
Why did a shoe company get $50 million in funding for their AI pivot?
squidsoup··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B
The only reason I haven't switched back to VS Code is pure laziness, not using any AI features in Cursor other than resolving diffs these days.
squidsoup··on ChatGPT Images 2.0
> band poster doesn't have to be a labor of love artisanal thing

Very few bands would agree with that statement.

squidsoup··on ChatGPT Images 2.0
Are camera manufacturers working on signed images? That seems like the only way our trust in any digital media doesn't collapse entirely.
squidsoup··on ChatGPT Images 2.0
> but in general though - will people believe in anything photographic ?

Hopefully film makes a come back.

squidsoup··on The buns in McDonald's Japan's burger photos are all slightly askew
It's just burger wabi sabi.
squidsoup··on Bring Back Idiomatic Design (2023)
Design is more than styling, it is also behaviour and state, which is what react helps you encapsulate in a component.
squidsoup··on DRAM pricing is killing the hobbyist SBC market
You can imagine all you want, but my understanding is there is no credible evidence that scaling LLMs will result in true AGI.
squidsoup··on Slop is not necessarily the future
false dichotomy - you need to care about both.
squidsoup··on TSA lines are so out of control that travelers are hiring line-sitters
The TSA Pre lines are often as long as the standard lines.
squidsoup··on Meta Horizon Worlds on Meta Quest is being discontinued
Don't forget the deranged furries.
squidsoup··on AirPods Max 2
Not everyone likes in-ear headphones, so if you want something that works seamlessly across multiple devices, its the only option.
squidsoup··on AirPods Max 2
If you have multiple apple devices, the seamless switching is the killer feature, for me anyway. My Bose headphones were absolutely abysmal at this, and it drove me mad.
squidsoup··on New iPad Air, powered by M4
The pro has the perfect form factor for sheet music. Absurd over kill in terms of other hardware, but there's really no alternative for musicians (other than paper).
squidsoup··on Nano Banana 2: Google's latest AI image generation model
> They don't pay $30K for slop art

I beg your pardon, but have you heard of Jeff Koons or Kaws?
