spxneo··on Tell HN: Ever think of applying to YC? Do it this weekend for S24
In asymmetric high risk/reward environments, what YC does is not unusual. When a trade has 99% of failing but 1% will pay for all the bets and then some, you simply cannot take large positional bets that results in equal power dynamics.

They've built something heavily coveted and exclusive that people participating cannot see that they are gambling with their time and life.

It's very comforting to founders to feel safety in numbers when operating in an illiquid market (the goal is to sell your shares to a buyer whether its secondary market or IPO) but know this:

Illiquid markets are rife with manipulation and false positives.

correlation doesn't rule out causation and anecdotes should be heeded with caution.

to YC you are just another lotto ticket out of the thousands of founders, be very wary about divulging information such as finances or what works.

its akin to going to a hedge fund, letting them in on an edge you discovered, and expecting them to not trade on that information without you.

spxneo··on Stop Doing Cloud
very refreshing to read. theres just so much complexity behind myriad of decisions just to build simple apps/websites and this is not a coincidence.

by draining cognitive resources you are able to manipulate people into making poor quality decisions. ex) mainstream news, aisle of grocery items, FANG-led development mythos and over-engineering

the last one is especially susceptible to manipulation.

"but we have to scale", "i read HN article from an ivy league founder", "someone with lot of followers on twitter said so"

and boom you are no longer in control of your mind or aware of losing control.

marketing is just like herding cattles, DDOS their cognitive resources so they can't think for themselves and gaslight each other, make them use your npm/pip package with a subscription/metering from day 1, get em while they are young.

im not saying you have to graduate from ivy league to get into YC but bulk majority of people in YC are.

they are almost always going to favour people from their own league.

im basing this off people who are coming from YC and telling me how it is.

some folks applied to YC in the past, get rejected and then find some Harvard graduate running with their ideas they submitted.

you need to graduate from the "right school/alumni" and i would discourage anybody else from wasting their time
spxneo··on Ask HN: How do you ask users about their pain point?
see this is why "startup" is so much harder than running a "business"

a "business" already works on what is built or established, refining processes to branch off beaten paths to sales/marketing

a "startup" operates with too many unknowns for the average person, 99% failure means only 1% of the people figure out the unknowns to become a "business"

I just don't understand why people just default to "startup". You should be focused on running a business and make a 15 cents out of a dollar spent, not spend a dollar to make 15 cents in hopes that someone will "buy you out" or you "ipo"

such are pipe dreams

Especially when your leaders, elites telling economically disenfranchised Ukranian men to a meat grinder while they themselves live abroad and have acquired German citizenship
spxneo··on IBM and the Holocaust
yet the sanctions are doing little to change the outcome in the battlefield

Russia is clearing pulling out ahead and its delusional to think that Ukraine even had a chance to begin with

Quantity always wins over quality.

spxneo··on IBM and the Holocaust
and Ukraine is still on track to lose the war even after all that sanction

Western companies exiting Russia created several Russian billionaires overnight

Resulting in more tax revenues and money staying within that country

I'm sorry but Western virtue signaling impact is routinely over-exaggerated and actually achieves the complete opposite of what it set out to do

spxneo··on Supabase Storage now supports the S3 protocol
well before there was supabase I would use Firebase

so it would serve Google well if they matched what supabase is doing or bought them out

spxneo··on Supabase Storage now supports the S3 protocol
big reason on why I decided on Flutter
spxneo··on Supabase Storage now supports the S3 protocol
the only reason i am using supabase is that its cheap and i can export it to postgres, thats it.

i know that one day these founders will exit and it will be sold to AWS, Google or Microsoft cloud.

so its a bit of a gamble but that risk is offset by its super cheap cost and ability to export out the data and swap out the pieces (more work but at that point you should be cashflow positive to pay engineers to do it for you).

spxneo··on Ask HN: How do you ask users about their pain point?
asking people for pain points like an interview is never going to work unless you have connections/network to introduce you

there is a hack around this but each industry is different

You know the whole point of YC companies is to flip their equity on the public market right and then moving on to the next one?

wrong question to ask

the correct question is who funded coinbase

spxneo··on GPT-4 users, how are you using it? Is ChatGPT Plus still worth it?
looks like i need to switch because after a while it starts to lag (super slow output) and then eventually the dreaded "come back again in an hour"

I can barely get anything done as is and with ~ChatGPT4 alternatives cost 100x less, OpenAI appears to be in deep trouble.

spxneo··on GPT-4 users, how are you using it? Is ChatGPT Plus still worth it?
Same experience here writing basic Swift code. It struggles to do what would take a developer less than 30 seconds to do.

Instead, ChatGPT kept giving me solutions no matter what prompt I gave it. It seems to get "stuck" after giving a good run initially.

I'm totally not sold on this AI hype anymore, I can begin to see cracks.

Not only does this raise cost of debt in the future but investors might become more wary that bastion of American hegemony, her rule of law can be changed now at the whims of its populist prone presidents eager to polarize and divide its citizens.

Just look at Israel. Gets attacked by a decentralized terror cell (its not just Hamas), gets criticized for going after said terrorists around the region (with enough backed by Iran) and the American president concerned with voters low key threatened Israeli prime minister that security agreement can be voided.

Same thing with Ukraine. Believed in US guarantees, now facing a totally different reality from where it was in 2022, with a reluctant American president who has to worry about voters.

All of the above populist policies are the result of generation like parent's comment, selfishly believing that they are somehow more deserving than others while offering no merit for that claim, haven't fought WW1 or WW2 or lived through Cold War or even experienced the War on Terror.

All this does is hurt the very people its designed to benefit in the long run (as always is with populist policies). It signals that they don't care about merit but virtue signaling away responsibility. From this I feel worried that American politics have picked the wrong fork in the road and we are going to see significant curb to our freedom, speech and common sense, globally.
