spunker540··on U.S. users are leaving Facebook by the millions, Edison Research says
Most people use Facebook these days to keep track of their acquaintances from various stages in life: high school friends, college friends, former coworkers, people you meet at parties etc.

In that regard it’s not very useful to teenagers who are already in the same building as their entire network every day (their school). Plus teenagers don’t want to hang out where their parents do. When I was in school part of facebook’s appeal was the fact that parents couldn’t get on even if they wanted due to the .edu email requirement!

I think if the company is open for business on a day that you want off for a religious holiday, then that's why companies give PTO, so that people can have flexibility in how and when they don't show up to work when everyone else does.
spunker540··on Thieves of Experience: How Google and Facebook Corrupted Capitalism
I honestly don’t believe Apple is much more concerned- I think they’ve seen the negative sentiment towards FB and Google and have decided to seize the moment by highlighting that they are a hardware company, which they’ve always been. It’s easy to preserve privacy when you make most of your money selling luxury hardware.
spunker540··on Is it ok to refuse to work on a project?
How much of your negative feelings stem from the fact that it is a front end project rather than backend?

I feel there is an unfair stigma against front-end development in most engineering organizations. Without front-ends most backend systems would serve no purpose at all if the end user is a non-engineer customer/client/user. The frontend experience makes or breaks most endeavors. It’s of immense business value to have clean, maintainable bug-free front end code.

I frequently see projects of great value stall due to the bottleneck of having too few willing frontend developers to take the project across the finish line and turn a backend system into a usable product.

I don’t think PRC propaganda would so blatantly invite people to come visit but keep their mouths shut while visiting. They probably wouldn’t promote that they police speech so heavily.

That’s a problem with the Myanmar government, not location-based services. People have also been jailed for articles they publish in newspapers or private letters they write. In those cases no one blames the act of writing letters- it’s fairly obvious that the government that’s reading mail is to blame, not the letter-writing in the first place.
spunker540··on Taxpayers Should Never Subsidize Stadiums
My first job was in a superb suburban library in the Midwest which was open from 9am-9pm (except on sundays which was noon-5pm).

However I now live in NYC, the city that never sleeps, and can’t believe that local libraries in Manhattan are generally open 10am-6pm making them hard for students to visit if they have extra-curricular activities and nearly impossible for anyone working to ever take advantage. The hours alone seem to indicate the libraries are mostly for the retired or unemployed.

spunker540··on Facebook is not equipped to stop the spread of authoritarianism
Exactly— it is ridiculous to think that it’s Facebook’s fault that a world power like Russia is putting its resources behind fake identities and fake companies to abuse their platform. The US government should be the one to blame for allowing that to happen.

It seems like Facebook is blamed for all of the worlds woes at this point, without any thought given to the fact that there have always been authoritarian governments and bad leaders, and just because in the internet age some of these bad things take place online doesn’t mean Facebook or the internet is causing them.

If anything it just goes to show Facebook is not the ideal platform for political dissidents and protesters and maybe there is an opportunity to create something better for that use-case. The platform was designed for US college students to socialize and plan parties and post photos originally, not for people to combat authoritarian regimes. Those two use cases are drastically different. The fact that Facebook is not ideal for all use-cases shouldn’t surprise anyone.

I agree they now have great opportunities to do a lot more than simply catering to safe and secure Americans, but they are still a young company with a lot to learn.

spunker540··on The Riots in France Are What Happens When Facebook Changes It Algorithm
“... and when local radio stations and newspapers invite the protest organizers on to their programs to help share their petitions hosted on change.org and MesOpinions”

I think the headline should be extended.

spunker540··on The Riots in France Are What Happens When Facebook Changes It Algorithm
I think the tie between the protests and the algorithm changes are tenuous at best. Who can say if the protests would have happened without Facebook? Paris and France have a long history of protests besides.

“Normal stuff happens due to Facebook” should really be the onion take here.

Suppose there’s a headline “50% of birthday parties are planned on Facebook” - does that mean Facebook is suddenly responsible for all those birthday parties? Or are they normal events that happen to be planned on Facebook these days?

spunker540··on Ask HN: How do you manage UI/UX for your side projects?
What would you recommend in its place? I’ve been using bootstrap for any web side projects of mine mostly for its ability to flex and handle multiple devices sizes and also because its defaults look passable out of the box.

I agree containers are confusing but honestly making a custom web app look good on all resolutions/aspect ratios is complicated in my opinion.

spunker540··on Facebook accused of striking 'secret deals over user data'
I don't think its anti-competitive considering they don't need to provide any third party APIs at all. Plus it's not like to create a social app you absolutely need FB login or FB data. I think if your company can't make it and you're blaming FB for not giving you enough data maybe your business model was a little too dependent on Facebook in the first place.
spunker540··on Facebook's seized files published by MPs
That's a good point of comparison but the difference I think is at the time Windows was a dominant OS, and most people's only option. For them to come out and compete with Netscape and prevent Netscape from operating on their OS would be a death sentence for Netscape because it is not reasonable for Netscape's response to be "Fine we'll make our own OS!".

There's a huge difference between "build your own OS" and "build your own website login".

It's not a very tall order to create a social website that doesn't use FB login. Social websites should not by default have a right to all of facebook's users. They should have to build that user base themselves.

spunker540··on Facebook's seized files published by MPs
That means that any site that allows two people to communicate can be complicit -- be it forums, discussion boards or chat/messages. Criminals can easily adopt code words, or encrypt their plaintext communications in ways that a website would be unable to police. How about email? Are email providers also required to detect all criminal activity occurring in their emails?

Ultimately it's a massive burden placed on companies if they are required to read and sort through all communication occurring on their platform and it also necessarily removes any and all privacy from every communication platform. Do we do the same thing for cell phone manufacturers or telecom providers? What about monitors that display the messages or keyboards that let people type the messages soliciting illegal activity?

spunker540··on Facebook's seized files published by MPs
I believe 99.99...% of interactions on Facebook are positive. They are friends and family keeping in touch, posting life updates, organizing events, hobby/support communities etc.

Most ads are normal ads from legitimate businesses including a lot of small and local businesses who find it very valuable for reaching their customers and growing their business.

The recent rhetoric and news coverage acts as if Facebook is entirely full of fake news and echo chambers and political manipulation when the truth is while that stuff is happening it's a minuscule percentage of the billions of posts per day.

spunker540··on Facebook's seized files published by MPs
Can you really blame FB for not providing API access to competitors?

If you want make Farmville with FB login go ahead, but if you try to make "FB 2.0" with FB Login and all friend connections preserved but keep all the ad revenue yourself obviously Facebook is gonna put their foot down.

spunker540··on Facebook's seized files published by MPs
I think when you choose to sell your products on Amazon, or host your videos on YouTube or use FB login for your app, you're necessarily taking a risk by depending on a third-party for your success. It's possible to create your own login system or host your own videos or own your own e-commerce site and there are even a whole host of valid competitors for all these services too.
spunker540··on Facebook's seized files published by MPs
I think they were mostly using their market dominance to kill apps that decided to live on the Facebook platform in the first place.

If you build an app that relies solely on Facebook login and access to Facebook data as key parts of your business model then are you really a competitor?

spunker540··on Google rescinds candidate verbal offer due to low GPA
I recently went through the hiring process at google and after the two pre-interview calls with HR, one full day of interviews and 4 follow up calls for team matching (matched with a team) as well as additional calls with hr to discuss compensation (where I was pressured to divulge competing offers) I didn’t pass the hiring committee. I think their process in general is not very considerate. Most of my interviewers barely introduced themselves, talked about what they do, or asked me anything about my experience. I also found out the day of my interview I was being considered for “l3” which is entry-level despite my 4 years of industry experience and was told it’s too late to change that and to be considered for a higher level I’d need to re-interview.

that's a good point about the keeping older milk up front!
spunker540··on Shutting Down Google+ for Consumers
I'm not sure that's a compelling reason. Why aren't frozen goods at the back of the store then?

And are you sure milk needs to be stocked from behind? Is it at the back of the store because it needs to be stocked from behind - or is it stocked from behind simply because its at the back of the store?

spunker540··on Sans Forgetica, a font designed to help you remember your study notes
I was the same way for the most part, I'd skip taking notes unless a teacher was making a very important point that I knew I wouldn't remember or wouldn't be able to look up later. But most of the time if it was important the teacher wouldn't just say it once and never touch on it again!
spunker540··on Donna Strickland won her Nobel prize in Physics before she got a wikipedia page
I'm not saying its malicious or deliberate, but any non-diverse population will tend to exhibit some bias.

I don't think its that surprising that a group of men share different view points about worthy posts than a group of women would. The point is wikipedia doesn't have good coverage in this regard. I'd say the same thing for a group of American editors vs a group of African editors. Or a group of wall st professionals vs blue collar workers.

Wikipedia's editors have a diversity problem in light of their goal to be the "world's encyclopedia".
